Bibliography The files of the Arctic Environmental Information and Data Center were utilized for the compilation of an initial bibliography. Refcrenc:ed titles were then obtained and citations pertaining to the area and species of interest which appeared in these reports were added to expand the initial bibliography. References were deleted if, when obtained, the study was not found to pertain to the area or species of interest. lQ a few cases where references were unobtainable, such citations are followed by the note "(not seen)" to indicate that any pertinent data contained in this reference is not included in the remainder of the inventory. All possible reference sources are listed with the exception of those containing extremely general subject matter, most early (before 1910) explor- atory reports, and annual report series such as Alaska Fishery and Jur-Seal Industries in (yeat) which were issued prior to 1960. b. Species Lists A list of anadromous and coastal marine fishes for each proposed refuge or proposed additions to existing refuges was compiled. An initial list was taken from each final environmental statement; however, three major taxonomic references were consulted to add to, or delete from this initial list - List of Fishes of Alaska and Adjacent Waters with a Guide to Some of Their Liter~ture (Quast and Hall 1972), Pacific/ Fishes of Canada (Hart 1973), and Freshwnt~r Flshes of Cannda (Scott and Crossman 1973). -

Siwicke, B.S. Fairbanks, Alaska August 2014 v Abstract Arctic Lamprey Lethenteron camtschaticum and Pacific Lamprey Entosphenus tridentatus are ecologically and culturally important anadromous, parasitic species experiencing recent population declines in the North Pacific Ocean. However, a paucity of basic information on lampreys feeding in the ocean precludes an incorporation of the adult trophic phase into our understanding of lamprey population dynamics. The goal of this research was to provide insight into the marine life-history stage of Arctic and Pacific lampreys through lamprey-host interactions in the eastern Bering Sea. An analysis of two fishery-independent surveys conducted between 2002 and 2012 in the eastern Bering Sea revealed that Arctic Lampreys were captured in epipelagic waters of the inner and middle continental shelf and were associated with Pacific Herring Clupea pallasii and juvenile salmonids Oncorhynchus spp. In contrast, Pacific Lampreys were captured in benthic waters along the continental slope associated with bottom-oriented groundfish. Consistent with this analysis of fish assemblages, morphology of recently inflicted lamprey wounds observed on Pacific Cod Gadus macrocephalus was similar to morphology of Pacific Lamprey oral discs, but not that of Arctic Lamprey oral discs. -

United States Departmentof the Interior BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT TAKE PRIDE • Alaska State Office '"AMERICA 222 West Seventh Avenue, #13 Anchorage, Alaska 99513-7504 http://www.blm.gov/ak In Reply Refer to: 1864 (AK9410) Memorandum To: File FF-094614 From: Jack Frost, Navigable Waters Specialist (AK9410) Subject: Summary Report for the Navigability of the Nabesna River within the Tanana River Region, Alaska The State of Alaska (State) filed an application, dated October 3, 2005, for a recordable disclaimer of interest (RDI) for lands underlying the Nabesna River "between the ordinary high water lines of the left and right banks from its origins at the Nabesna Glacier within Township 5 North, Ranges 13 and 14 East, Copper River Meridian, Alaska, downstream to its confluence with the Tanana River in Township 15 North, Range 19 East, Copper River Meridian." 1 The State identified the location of its application on two maps entitled "Nabesna River Recordable Disclaimer of Interest Application," dated October 3, 2005. The maps were submitted with the State's application. The State filed an amended RDI application for the Nabesna River, dated September 16, 2015, "to include only the submerged lands underlying the Nabesna River from its mouth to the Black Hills (Sec. 25, TI IN, Rl 7E, and CRM). The State withdraws its request for an RDI on the submerged lands underlying the Nabesna River from Sec. 25, Tl IN, R17E, CRM and the river's source at the Nabesna Glacier." 2 Clarifying its letter from September 16, 2015, the State submitted an email on October 16, 2015 stating that "the State withdraws its request for an RDI on the submerged lands underlying the Nabesna River from its confluence with the Cheslina River in Section 35, Tl2N, RI 7E, CRM upstream to the river's source at the Nabesna Glacier." 3 The State bases its application for a disclaimer of interest on the Equal Footing Doctrine, the Submerged Lands Act of May 22, 1953, the Alaska Statehood Act, the Submerged Lands Act of 1988, and any other legally cognizable reason. -

Agnatha - Lamprey, Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Super Class: Agnatha Hagfish Agnatha are jawless fish. Lampreys and hagfish are in this class. Members of the agnatha class are probably the earliest vertebrates. Scientists have found fossils of agnathan species from the late Cambrian Period that occurred 500 million years ago. Members of this class of fish don't have paired fins or a stomach. Adults and larvae have a notochord. A notochord is a flexible rod-like cord of cells that provides the main support for the body of an organism during its embryonic stage. A notochord is found in all chordates. Most agnathans have a skeleton made of cartilage and seven or more paired gill pockets. They have a light sensitive pineal eye. A pineal eye is a third eye in front of the pineal gland. Fertilization of eggs takes place outside the body. The lamprey looks like an eel, but it has a jawless sucking mouth that it attaches to a fish. It is a parasite and sucks tissue and fluids out of the fish it is attached to. The lamprey's mouth has a ring of cartilage that supports it and rows of horny teeth that it uses to latch on to a fish. Lampreys are found in temperate rivers and coastal seas and can range in size from 5 to 40 inches. Lampreys begin their lives as freshwater larvae. In the larval stage, lamprey usually are found on muddy river and lake bottoms where they filter feed on microorganisms. The larval stage can last as long as seven years! At the end of the larval state, the lamprey changes into an eel- like creature that swims and usually attaches itself to a fish. -

FNSB - Department of Parks and Recreation Executive Summary This Master Plan outlines the Fairbanks North Star Borough’s (FNSB’s) plan for the future development and use of the Tanana Lakes Recreation Area, a 750-acre multi-use park south of the City of Fairbanks along the Tanana River. The purpose of the Master Plan is to provide the FNSB with a long-term, planning guide for gravel extraction and development of the recreation area based on resource opportunities and constraints, development opportunities and constraints, and public needs. The Master Plan details the planning purpose and process, existing site conditions and land use, resources assessment, public process and demand, development plan, maintenance and operations considerations, and permits and authorizations required for development of the recreation area. The project concept originated approximately 15 years ago by the FNSB and its need to extract gravel for use at the South Cushman Landfill. The unsecured site has historically been a common place for illegal dumping of junk or abandoned vehicles and other refuse, as well as other unauthorized and criminal activities. Passing years have brought to the forefront the desire to clean up the site in order to enhance the wildlife habitat and natural features of the area in conjunction with the FNSB’s plan to extract gravel. As a result, this Master Plan has become a priority driven by both public safety and the importance of establishing this area for the community’s use and enjoyment. -

Ecological Role: Its rarity in the U.S. Chukchi Sea and absence from the U.S. Beaufort Sea implies an insignificant role in regional ecosystem dynamics. Physical Description/Attributes: Elongate, eel-like body, blue-black to dark brown dorsally, pale or silver ventrally. For specific diagnostic characteristics, seeFishes of Alaska, (Mecklenburg and others, 2002, p. 61, as Lampetra tridentata) [1]. Swim bladder: Absent [2]. Antifreeze glycoproteins in blood serum: Unknown. Range: Eastern U.S. Chukchi Sea [1, 3]. Elsewhere, from Bering Sea south to Punta Canoas, northern Baja California, Commander Islands, and Pacific coast of Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia, and Honshu, Japan [1]. Relative Abundance: Rare in U.S. Chukchi Sea, with one record near Cape Lisburne, Alaska [1, 3]. Common in southeastern Bering Sea [6]. Widespread at least as far southward as Honshu, Japan [7]. Rare to occasional in marine waters off Commander Islands and Pacific coasts of Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia, and Hokkaido, Japan [1].
