WANDERING THOUGHTS

(as we see them)

Hopefully, Phase #2 re-opening went well for everyone – as an ordinary citizen, we sure appreciated some of the services being restored – even partially. We salute all the essential workers who risked their health to keep th the most important things available. Now we await Phase #3 on June 8 .

On our limited trips downtown, we are seeing a lot of strangers – but they look similar to folks we used to know when things were NORMAL – oh, maybe ‘cause they’ve had a hair cut (harvest). One thought that crossed our “isolated -mind” was for name tags to be issued along with masks. A friend in another Town was told they were #44 on their barber’s list! (Local salons were reported working up to 15 hours a day trying to accommodate their customers – kudos to you gals!)

On our weekly “paper run”, we were amazed to see fields of green where crops were only being seeded last week. On an “outside the bubble – get outa town” excursion last Sunday (long weekend), we observed 14 farm units in the fields planting the seed – in a 3 hour span. The long hours of daylight makes for a great advantage of covering a lot of area – keep in mind – in only 23 days, the daylight hours begin to go the other way!

Rebirth/awakening – however you care to describe what we’re seeing in our landscape, is a great “uplift” for what we’re experiencing daily. Sights of baby calves frolicking in the sun or just laying stretched out absorbing the rays, baby lambs playing their “sheepish” games – and even a foal (2020 edition) being groomed by its mama in a field just west of Walpole – all refreshing to see!

And then there’s fresh rhubarb and asparagus to enjoy from our gardens – and dandelions if you care for a salad! It doesn’t end there – always DL wines – nothing should be tagged as being useless!

Shocking news (more) this week was that the Triangle hockey league has folded – after how many years? The Wawota Flyers have great (?) memories of the years they were a part of – games against Montmartre, Kipling, Glenavo n and more. Travel times to distant arenas for shift working players had to be a major part of the decision – cherish the memories!

Grey Cup 2020 is definitely a NO-NO for Regina come November. If there is a season at all, the team ending up with the best record will be awarded the game – minus all the festivities NORMALLY associated – so maybe

– just maybe – it could still be at Mosaic . There is some guaranteed good news – 2022 has been awarded to – Hamilton is the 2021 host city. (We all know that Sask hosts the BEST

PARTY!)

How time flies – 40 years since the Terry Fox Run began. Several runs were organized across the nation – Wawota even had one for a few years.

Stay safe everyone – it’s all about coming together … …

COVID-19 NEW VOCABULARY

We are all aware that COVID-19 has affected our lives forever – even to the way we speak – new words.

A few more examples are:

QUARANTINIS – experimental cocktails tried at “locktail hour” – getting earlier – and lasting longer each week.

BETWEEN A SHOP AND A HOARD PLACE - the problem of needing to purchase the basics We’re but not wanting to be accused of stockpiling. back … … QUARANTEAM – people – or pets – you’re in lockdown with. well,

SPACE INVADER – a person who comes maybe closer to you than two meters. not!

COVIDIOT – the person who ignores June 14 – TBA advice/warnings with no regard for the safety of June 28 - TBA others.

“LONG LIVERS”

In 2003/2004, members of the Communities in Bloom group were invited by the residents of 98 Hall Street to dig up some excess tulip bulbs on the east side of their house. CiB were more than pleased to accept the offer with the intentions of using the bulbs to plant around Town in selected community plots.

An estimated 4 – 5 dozen bulbs were harvested – an excess to the present needs were planted in a “temporary nursery” at 109 Pipestone Avenue (you know how temporary sometimes becomes permanent – well …)

Fast forward – 16 – 17 years later, approximately 5 dozen faithfully bloom every year – but this year (with everything else in life changing), one yellow tulip appeared amongst all the red ones – first time!

At first sighting, we had to do a “double-take” – being yellow, our first thought – “Oh no, a

@#$% dandelion has crossed with a tulip and here is the result!”

Whatever the colour, the first colour of spring is always looked forward to – year after year – and at the same time, bringing back happy memories of Communities in Bloom.

2 / 4 THE BIRDS BREAKING NEWS !!

Our usual Sundays of late have included a rural tour st (outside the box) to check on the rest of the world. This Coffee on us – the 1 day past Sunday being a little rainy, dull and cool, the decision the Village Inn opens up in was made to leave the “wheels parked” and stay at home (more isolation) and enjoy all the activities happening on honour of News-in-Five’s the 100 block of Pipestone Avenue. (In case you aren’t 17th Birthday – and the familiar with Wawota, the 100 block of Pipestone consists of the school and a vacant house to rent on one side – return of our “new normal” and 3 out of 5 houses for sale on the other side – that’s … … where the action is (was)!

Leisurely settled on the deck, we are joined by a couple of robins – they crisscrossed the lawn a total of six times – PHASE 3 OF RE-OPENING: sometimes as close as 2 feet (there goes social distancing June 8th again)! - Personal services - Restaurants and Licensed They would hop a-ways, stop, tilt their head as to listen, Establishments: (50% capacity) and be rewarded by capturing a tasty morsel. They would - Gyms and Fitness Facilities come to the driveway, cross to the neighbours – soon to - Facilities return. (Maybe grass fertilizer makes our worms/bugs - Places of Worship bigger and juicier.) - Public & Private Gatherings (Indoor 15

people, Outdoor 30 people) Once in a while, they would take a “time-out”, cross onto the street to a puddle for a beverage or mid-day dip. However:

- Businesses/customers maintain physical Their only companions were a few sparrows which went unnoticed. Once another robin (male we suspect) distancing. - Restaurants/Bars, etc. 50% capacity, no stopped by, hoping to break up a relationship (see birds do it too!) After a “fury of feathers” the uninvited guest buffets, no recreation areas soon got the message. - Child care facilities – max of 15 children per building space So, Gertrude and Heathcliff, you may be #2 on the -Gyms/fitness facilities – physical distances, stringent cleaning and rating chart – welcome Redgey and the Mrs.! disinfecting

Other precautions are still in place: - physical distancing - wash hands with soap and water Know what I really need to do? - disinfect/sanitize all surfaces I need to stay 6 feet away from - wearing masks is promoted my Debit Card. - using COVID 19 COMMON SENSE!

Check Sask Government sites for more info.

You asked ??

Question: Are dandelions exempt from social distancing in the Covid-19 pandemic?

Answer: Apparently they are – why? Seemingly, they are growing closer together this year than usual (normal)!!

And secondly – how can they not be in sight at 8 a.m. and be in full bloom/flourishing by 12 noon? Guess only Mother Nature can answer this one!
