I was deeply moved by the tribute I received in September 2015 from Minister Muñoz, on behalf of the President and Government of Chile which recorded my services as Observer to the Plebiscito which took place in 1988 and of which I have the deepest of respectful memories. I have had the honour of visiting the region three times as president of Ireland, from Chile, through Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, Mexico and Peru, all countries which feature in the exhibition on “The Irish in Latin America” of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. I am very pleased that this exhibition will be presented during the Conference in Santiago by MESSAGE FROM MICHAEL D. HIGGINS, PRESIDENT OF IRELAND its Curator, Dr Margaret Brehony of the National University of Galway. New resident Irish Embassies will open in Santiago and in Bogota in early 2019, as part of the I warmly welcome the important initiative of the convening of this Conference in Santiago on commitment to double the scope and impact of Ireland’s global footprint.
