MESSAGE ARTICLE – MARCH 2018 Rabbi Shae J. Kane D.D. PASSOVER It could be said that the Exodus from Egypt is possibly the most influential event of all time. After all, no matter what historical event captures our imagination, the Industrial Revolution, the French Revolution, the Russian Revolution, or the “rebellion” which founded these United States, the fact remains that each and every one of them has been touched in some way by the power and message of the biblical exodus. Certainly, that event transformed the Jewish people. “I am the Lord, who took you out of the land of Egypt” states the opening passage of the Ten Commandments. Having no other “god” implies that neither money nor power nor political supremacy has the right to demand absolute loyalty. All human claims are relative in the presence of God. Is this not the key to democracy? Secondly, the moral of the Exodus is that justice is due to the weak and the poor. The Bible is very clear in applying this morality in specific and pragmatic ways: honest weights and measures, interest-free loans to the indigent, crops left in the field for the stranger, orphan and widow. The Exodus, sensitizing erstwhile slaves to the needs of all the oppressed, revolutionized religious ethics and has been adopted as well by other world religions. Thirdly, particularly in modern times, the image of redemption has galvanized our world. This image of redemption has become a moral dynamic, and people everywhere have struggled to reject suffering and slavery of any kind in the quest for freedom and liberation. Most worldwide revolutionary expectations, from South Africa to South America, Russia, Europe, the civil rights movement in this country, all in some way, are linked to the biblical event celebrated on Passover. Certainly the miraculous re-establishment of Eretz Yisrael, The Land of Israel as well, is intertwined with these same themes. Thus, as we sit down to our family S’darim, we should recognize that we are re-enacting the most consequential and cataclysmic of events. Whenever and wherever people seek their God-given dignity, the Exodus recurs. l’Shana haBa’ah – May this year see peace in Jerusalem and light in the hearts of God’s children everywhere.

President’s Message March 2018

Shalom All! Time goes by quickly when you are involved in many things. It is hard to believe that it soon will be Pesach, with Spring just around the corner. If you have been joining us at MJC, we have had wonderful programs this past February. The weather has been cold, but the warmth inside of Madison has been very welcoming. Thank You Irene Cimini for your annual support of the delicious fruits and nuts at our Tu B’Shevat Seder. It was truly enjoyed and appreciated by all. I would also like to thank all of those involved in our interesting Friday night programs. This includes the planners, speakers, musicians, and congregants. We are definitely on the right track when members of all ages enjoy and attend our programs. Madison Jewish Center not only welcomes, but needs your help with our many activities. Sisterhood will be having its Annual Fashion Show May 17, 2018. It is in need of new merchandise or money to create raffle prizes. This fundraiser generates substantial revenue for Madison. Please contact our Sisterhood Presidents or me, if you can support us in this regard. It is important that you update your newest phone number/ email address and home address with our office staff: Irina, Bella, and Sheila. Most importantly, please notify them immediately when you need the assistance of the Rabbi and Cantor in celebratory or life changing occasions.

Wishing Everyone A Quick Start To Spring and a Happy Pesach!

Love, Barbara

Shalom Parents,

. I can’t believe how fast this school year has flown by.

Purim is over and everyone looked so good in their

costumes, adults included. This month we will be celebrating Passover at our Hebrew

school by having our annual Model Seder.

This month we are also celebrating the Bat Mitzvah of one of our

students, Megan Cohen. Megan is currently in the 7th grade at Fillmore Academy. We

want to wish her and her family Mazel Tov and good luck on her Haftarah. We know

she will do a great job!

Our annual Miss Chocolate candy sale has ended and we made a modest amount

of money, thanks to all of you who always support the P.A. However, we need more

parents to support our P.A. otherwise we will not be able to fund Tzivos Hashem

workshops or Purim carnivals in the future. We use the profits from our sales to pay

for these special events. We are still selling gift cards. You can order online or pick up

an order form in the office. Thanks again for your support. Finally we would like to

wish everyone a happy and healthy Passover.

MJC SOCIAL CLUB HAPPENINGS ------MARCH 2018

This year the Super Bowl party was on Sunday, February 4th. The turnout to watch the Philadelphia Eagles play the New England Patriots was great. Mah Jongg tables were set up for those that did not want to watch the game. It was held at AOH together with the Knights of Pythias.

Wednesday evening, February 28th, was our annual Purim celebration in conjunction with Sisterhood and PA. Many members came to listen to the Megilah reading and join in the fun. Some even wore costumes.

Our annual trip to Atlantic City is on Sunday, April 22nd. We will have breakfast in the shul at 8:30 and leave at 9:00. We will play Bingo on the bus ride. Then enjoy spending the day gambling, walking on the boardwalk, and/or shopping. The cost is only $36 and we will be getting a voucher for slot play.

The annual Social Club Shabbat is scheduled for Friday evening, May 11th. We will be enjoying a traditional dinner provided by our caterer before the service.

We are working on a trip for a Sunday in June to the Spanish/Portuguese Synagogue. Our end of year barbecue will also be held in June. Watch for further information.

Every member of MJC is also a member of the Social Club. Please take advantage of the many opportunities to spend time with friends. Let’s keep MJC as the center of Egalitarian Conservative Judaism in this part of .

Check our website (madisonjc.org), watch for flyers, and check the Message for further information. Reservations for all activities can be made through our email address ([email protected]).

A ziesen , kosher Pesach to all.

THE LATEST FROM SISTERHOOD MARCH 2018

Last month Sisterhood had an outstanding program presented by our member Meryl Fox who educated us about an organization for which she volunteers called SHARE. She provided us with invaluable information and we wish to express our appreciation to Meryl. If you were unable to attend, please note that SHARE is the leading Breast and Cancer organization that offers free Support and Educational programs. Thanks Meryl! Last month we also celebrated Purim with an inter-affiliate program that included something for all ages, and it worked out very well. As March is here we can now look forward to the spring and hopefully spring- like weather to go along with the season. The March board meeting will take place on Monday, March 19th to be followed by a Passover program led by Rabbi and Arlene Kane with songs, discussion and Passover refreshments. A flyer will be sent out with details. Save the date for the Torah Fund brunch on Sunday April 15th with guest speaker Joe Dorinson who will present a program concerning in sports. The Journal dinner will be held this year on Sunday May 6th at Madison (honoring Harriett and Shelli). The annual Fashion Show will be held on Thursday, May 17th. We will conclude the year at the end year dinner to be held on June 18th. Please join us. We would like to wish everyone a very happy Passover.
