PREFACE T has required much earnest effort and careful research to obtain and arrange I the brief account of the services, personal and military, of the valiant Soldiers of the American Revolution, who, at one time resided in, or whose graves are located in Chautauqua County, N. Y. The Historical Committees of the several Chapters of the Daughters of American Revolution, located in Chautauqua County, have been most painstaking as well as zealous in their work, and what is written in this little booklet is believed to be quite as authentic and correct as it has been possible to obtain from the records that have been found. The records, both military and personal, have been mainly supplied from official pension papers as well as from family records, local history, and the files of early local newspapers. It has been a work of real pleasure to the members of the local Committees to assist in paying a most deserved and merited tribute to the memory of those self sacrificing, patriotic, great soldiers who achieved so much and gave us the heritage of the Country's independence and freedom. ALLEN, PHINEAS-Born 1758. Died on the Pension List of 1840 as residing in Sept. 6, 1851, aged 93 years. Grave in the town of Poland, Chautauqua County, Allen Cemetery, town of Poland. It is N. Y. ATKINS, AMOS - Inscription on Fredonia, N. Y., July 5, 1834. Grave in grave stone says he was a Revolutionary Cemetery at Fredonia, N. Y. He enlisted Soldier. It is certain that there are a number of names of Revolutionary Soldiers who were at one time residents of Chautauqua County that are not included in the lists pre pared by the D. A. R. · Chapters in the preceding pages. It is because so little of authentic facts have at the present time been obtained of the personal or military history, although it is quite likely that later research may supply much that will prove valuable and interesting. The name of JOEL ANDREWS appears on the pension list of 1818 as residing in Chautauqua County, name of place not stated. The New Hampshire Historical Society gives his record as follows: "Born in 1753. Died in Chautauqua County, June 26, 1825. Married Anna--, June 1, 1786. She was born 1760 and died 1841. The Massachusetts record shows that he was of Charlestown, N. H. Enlisted in 1775 under Capt. Seth Murray, Col. Woodbridge; re-enlisted under Capt. Gilman, Col. Nixon, Sept. to Nov., 1776. N. H. rolls show him as on Lt.-Col. Hammond's return, Swanzey, Feb. 14, 1778, as lately enlisted, also in Capt. Abel Walker's Company, Col. Benj. Bellows' Reg't.
HASADIAH STEBBINS, born in 1754, ·served as private in Capt. Joseph Thompson's Company, Col. Daniel's Reg't, Mass. Line. He was born at Monson, Mass., and died in Chautauqua County, N. Y., in the year 1824. He married Betsey Sessions.Babcock, in 1777. The above is the record in Lin. Vol. 74, p. 102.
There is a grave in Charlotte Cemetery, town of Charlotte, of a man who is said to have been a Revolutionary soldier, of the name of CARPENTER. But no authentic personal or military record of him has been obtained.
NAHUM PARKHURST, born about 1767. Died Aug. 28, 1833. Grave in Pleasantville Cemetery, town of Chautauqua. Not any record of his services as a soldier of the Revolution has been obtained except from the headstone at his grave, which is inscribed: "With Wayne in battle, side by side, unharmed our hero fought." His wife, Abigail, died May 6, 1850, aged 78 years, 1 month and 6 days. Her grave is beside husband. He is not mentioned in any of the Chautauqua County Census Pension Lists. He settled in the town of Chautauqua in the year 1817.
JONAS RANDALL is the name of a man who may have been a soldier of the American Revolution, whose grave, without headstone, is in Blockville Cemetery, town of Harmony. He was born in 1754 and died in 1838. No record of his personal or military history has been found.
JOHN TUCKER, said to have been a Revolutionary soldier, but no -record of his services has been obtained. Born about 1765, died January 27, 1852. Grave in Dry Brook Cemetery, town of Poland. No mention of him in Pension Lists. 72 APPENDIX
JOHN FRANK, who was one of the early settlers of the town of Busti, born about 1743, in Germany, died Nov. 5, 1833, grave in Hatch Cemetery, Busti, may have been a soldier in the Revolution, although no record of his services has been obtained. He is not mentioned in the Pension Lists. His wife, Eve, according to family records, was as a child captured by Indians, taken to Canada, wher~ she re mained 3 years.
The Centennial History of Cha-µtauqua County, 1904, says HENRY ELLIOTT, at one time a resident of the town of Chautauqua, was a soldier of the Revolution, was badly wounded in the campaign against Burgoyne, afterwards served on the ship Putnam, which in its cruise off the coast of England, captured nine prizes. No further record obtained.
Although not a resident of Chautauqua County, GIDEON NORTHRUP, a Revolutionary soldier, spent the latter part of his life at Pine Grove, Warren County, Pa., just across the line from Chautauqua County, where he was a familiar figure in his day, and where he left many descendants. He served in Col. Webb's Reg't, Conn. Militia, during a part of the war. Was granted a pension in 1832. Grave in State Road Cemetery, Farmington, Pa.
The Mayville Sentinel, in its issue of July 6, 1848, says: "ELKANAH PHILLIPS, a soldier of the Revolution, and a native of Grafton, N. H., died recently in the town of Carroll."
JEREMIAH WRIGHT, born in 1745, died in 1830, is the name of a man whose grave is located in the Forestville Cemetery, town of Hanover. No record of his per sonal history has been found, although it is the early impression of many that he was a Revolutionary soldier.
MARY STACY EATON, widow of Benjamin Eaton, a Revolutionary soldier, is mentioned in the Pension List of 1840, aged 87 and residing with David Eaton in the town of Portland, Chautauqua County, N. Y. Husband was at the battle of Lex ington and later served in the Mass. Reg't of Col. Thomas Nixon. They were married the day after the battle of Lexington. Husband died in the year 1800 and in I 806 she came to Chautauqua County with her son. She died in Portland, Oct. 14, 1848, aged 95 years, 6 months and 1 day.
COMFORT HARRINGTON, widow of William Harrington, is mentioned in the Pension List of 1840, aged 86, and residing in the town of Hanover, Chautauqua County, N. Y., with Andrew Irish, son-in-law. Her husband, William Harrington, enlisted in 1775, serving in Capt. Grave's Company, Mass. troops, and was in the battle of Bennington and White Plains. He died at Luzerne, N. Y., in 1820. She applied for and was granted pension in 1838. They had five children. 73 APPENDIX
ELIZABETH CRANE, widow of Curtis Crane, Revolutionary soldier, is men tioned in the Pension List of 1840, aged 86, and residing with Elizabeth Howes, in the town of Pomfret, Chautauqua County, N. Y. Curtis Crane and Elizabeth were married at Weathersfield, Conn., in 1774. He enlisted in 1778, serving in Capt. Walker's Company, Col. Webb's Reg't, Conn. troops, attaining the rank of Corporal. He died Oct. 14, 1824, at Eaton, Madison County, N. Y.
LUCY HEACOX INGHAM, widow of Isaac Ingham, is mentioned in the Pen sion List of 1840 as residing in the town of Pomfret, Chautauqua County, at the age of 83 years. Her husband., Isaac Ingham., died at Sherburne, N. Y., in 1828. He served three years in Revolutionary war in Company of Capt. Buckley, Col. Webb, and in Company of Capt. Mills, Col. Willis' Reg't, Conn. troops. Was in the battle of Bunker Hill. In 1838 widow was living with her son, Isaac Ingham, Jr., in the town of Arkwright, Chautauqua County, N. Y.
HANNAH EVENS, widow of Joseph Evens, is mentioned in the 1840 Pension List, aged 78, as residing in the town of Arkwright, Chautauqua County, N. Y. Her husband served in Capt. Janson's C_ompany, Col. Van Schaick's Reg't, N. Y. troops, during a portion of the Revolutionary war. He died in 1831 while on a visit to his son-in-law, Stephen Hill, at Arkwright. Hannah died Jan. 28, 1845.
SUSANNA SWIFT, widow of Samuel Swift, Revolutionary soldier, is mentioned in the Pension List of 1840, aged 70 years, and residing with her son, Lyman Swift, in the town of Sheridan, Chautauqua County, N. Y. He enlisted in 1778 and again in 1779., serving in Reg't of Col. Topins and in Col. Allen's Reg't, as private., Vt. troops. He died in 1821 at Elba, Genesee Co. ., N. Y., where they were at that time residing. She also resided for a time with her son., Clark C. Swift., in the town of Hanover.
SARAH MATTESON, widow of David Matteson., is mentioned in the Pension List of l 840, aged 8 5 years, and residing with D. J. Matteson at Fredonia, Chautauqua County, N. Y. Husband was Serg't in Vermont Militia under Captains Huntington and Gal,1sha, and participated in the battles of Ticonderoga and Bennington. His death occurred in I 8 I 8 at Shaftsbury, Vt.
ASA SEYMOUR is said to have been a Revolutionary soldier, residing at Fre donia at an early date, as shown by the following notice printed in the Chautauqua Gazette, published at Fredonia, in the issue of_May 18, 1818: "Died in this village last evening of a lingering illness, Mr. Asa Seymour in the 59th year of his age. A veteran soldier, he served his country faithfully for 6 years in the Revolutionary war, and had just made the affidavit necessary for obtaining his pension. A devout Christian, he has gone to receive an inheritance in Heaven. The funeral to be attended to-morrow at I o'clock P. M."

1. Simon Crosby (page 15). His obituary in Mayville Sentinel gives his age as 77 years, at his death, Jan. 25, 1837. He had a son who was a physician. 2. Daniel Deming (page 15). The last surviving Revo~ lution soldier in Stockton. He came to Chautauqua County in 1821 from Saratoga Co. N. Y. Veniah Fox (page 16). Said to have come to Chau- tauqua Co. in 1811. 4. Joseph Guyles (not Gug1e~~ page 16.) Died in Port land, April 21, 1827, aged 71. His wife, Sarah, died April 29, 1827 aged 61. (From Western Star, Westfield, N. Y. issue of May 4, 1827). Zimri Hill (page 16). Newspaper obituary says that he died from -effects o.f being thrown from a wagon, Nov. 13, 1843. 6. John Light (page 17). A Deborah Light, pres11mably his wife, died in Portland, Sept. 28, 1828, aged 70. (From Chautauqua Republican) Letters of administration on Estate of John Light were granted Nov. 8, 1828 to John and William Light. William Light had a farm in Westfield at "Light's Crossing" on the New York Central R.R. ;fereliiah.-P.otter (page 19). From his yo:uth at the tim_e, it is doubtful if he was captain. The .family have no account of any Revolutionary service. He was son of Jeremiah and Sarah (Matthewson) Potter. Married in Herkimer Co. N. Y. Nov. 16, 1799, Polly Barnes born May 16, 1777., daughter of Co~ort and Hannah (Cowee) Barnes.· Moved to Portland in fall of 1810 and early in 1812 built ·the first frame house in Portland •. He died Aug. 12, 1812, and was the second p~rson buried in Evergreen Cemetery. (See Dr. Taylor's History of Town of Portland, N. Y.) 8. Jeremiah Rood (page 19). Was born in Lebanon, Conn. Aug. 15, 1759 (Lebanon records). Son of Jeremiah and Hannah (Grover) Rood. Died in Fredonia in 1820, not 1830 as given on his tombstone (a new one) and the D.A.R. record. His last pension payment was in March, 1820. His estate was administered 1821. The widow declined to act, and Horace Risley was granted letters of admjnistration. In his declaration, March 15, 1820, Jeremiah Rood stated that he had lived for ten years in Pomfret, and prior to that time in Cazenovia, Madison Co. N. Y. By an unknown first wife he had two children, possibly others: Standish Rood, born 1785, married Mary Lovejoy and Harmony Rood who married Horace Risley. He married second, Abigail (Post) Phelps born in Hebron, Conn. Sept. 13, 1757, widow of Martin Phelps, and daughter of Deacon Israel Post. No children by this marriage. 9. Joseph Rood (page 19). Was born in Lebanon, Conn. May 7, 1754 (Lebanon records), son of Jeremiah and Hannah (Grover) Rood. His pension application was not granted, but after his death the department acknowledged his services. His children were: Asa-born 1785; Lois born 1790, married Barnabas Gilbert; Rebecca born 1795, married John Tarbox; Harriet born May 21, 1799, never married; George c. born Sept. 4, 1802. Joseph Rood married in Conn. Lois White born in Lebanon, Conn. Sept. 18, 1760, died in Fredonia. N. Y. Feb. 26, 1847, daughter of Nathaniel and Lois (Coomer) White. \Lebanon recordsl 10. Israel Smith (page 21). Was from Goshen, Conn. His first wife was Almeron Stanley, by whom he had Martha, George, Nancy, Amanda and Polly. The daugh ter, Martha, born 1791, married Ebenezer Eaton who had a fulling mill at Laona, in Pomrret township, and Israel Smith spent his last days with them. By his second marriage he had five children, the youngest born in 1819. Names not :round. 11. Asa Turner (page 22) • Came to Chautauqua c·ounty in 1814. Was a preacher nearly fifty years.
12. Nathan Wood (page 22) ~ Was born at Mansfieldl Conn. April 16, 1761.- died Arkwright, N •. Y. Nov. lt133. Married first Jan. 18, 1781 in Mansfield, Conn. Lucy Johnson who died May 7, 1824 and is buried at Marathon, N. Y. Married second about 1825 Mary- whose bu.rial place and death date is unknown. Nathan is buried in the abbey, Arkwright S11mmi. t Cemetery. He enlisted from Mansfield, and marched to Bennington, 1777, and also served in the Light Horse, Capt. Wales Co. Latimer's Regt. 1778. Re sided in Vermont 1790, in Otsego Co. N. Y. 1800, Lisle, N. Y. 1805 to 1824. Had six daughters: Lucy, married James Parker; Jerusha, married Evander Underwood; Nancy, married John Brown; Polly, married John Balch; Lor~, married Ebenezer Abbey; Hannah1 married David Abbey. (From Walter F. Brown, Albion, N. Y. 1932). 13. William Adams (pa.ge 23). The Biographical Cyclo pedia of Chautauqua County states that his wi:fe was Anna Atwater, (not Walters or Waters). His daughter, Sally, married Martin Alford. 14. Phineas Chamberlain (page 26). Married Rebecca D. Dairymple, born 1766. 15. Martin Luther Comstock (page 27). Born in Warren or Litchfield~ Conn. Aug. 1, 1757 - died at Har mony, N. Y. 1~43. He married at Warren, Conn. June 8, 1780, Hannah Taylor, born 1757 - died Hartwick, N. Y. 1813. Moved from Warren, Conn. to Hartwick, N. Y. about 1794 - to Harmony about 1831. Childr-en born at Warren, Conn: John Taylor 1781- 1809; Martin Luther Jr. 1782; Reuben Taylor 1787- 1875; Daniel 1789-1848; Samuel 1792-1851; Abel 1795-1874; Irene 1784-1841, married Edward B. Augur. One child by second marriage was Nicodemus born 1791, married Hannah Benedict. 17. Jesse Clothier (page 44). Is listed also with Erie County, Penna. Revolutionary Soldiers. He is said to have had three sons; Jonathan, Artemas K. and Ira, all born in HancQck, Mass. He was son of John Clothier and wife, Eunice Squire. 18. SaIIi.Uel Cranston (page 44). For genealogy see New England Register, Vol. 79, page 351. 19. Ephrain Herrick (page 46). Wife Lucy died Jan. 30, 1842, aged 82. 20. Joseph Mather (page 47). The Fredonia Censor obituary record gives his name as Matherson. 21. Christopher McManus (page 47). Had a son Jaines McManus; a daughter who married Thomas W. Wilcox and a daughter who married a Gage. 2la. William Wood (page 51). Was son or William and Susanna (Howe) Wood. See D.A.R. No. 87805 for both Williams. 22. Calvin Barns (page 53). There is no evidence that Calvin Barns served in the Revolution. He did serve in the War of 1812 and received a shot in the knee cap at Battle of Black Rock ·rrom which he was ever after crippled. He was born in town of West~rn, now Warren, Mass. Nov. 7, 1766, son or Comf'ort and Hannah (Cowee) Barns. Comf'ort Barns was a Revolutionary soldier living at New Ashford, Mass. where he was town clerk, removed later to Herkimer Co. N. Y. where he died 1816. Calvin Barns married at Hal.f Moon, N. Y. Jan. 3, 1792 Rachel Kennedy-, daughter o:f David Kennedy, a Revolutionary soldier in Conn. and wife, Mary Campbell. Calvin Barns had: Molly, Lydia, Calvin Jr., Anna, Miriam, Rachel, Fatima, Rober.t K •. and Lucy Barns. He died Jan. 18, 1847. 23. Peter Barnhart (page 54). The Mayville Sentinel o.f Aug. l, 1877 gives his .family history, stating that his oldest sons, John and Jacob settled in upper Canada. Sons: Jonathan, Peter Jr. and Henry lived near Hartrield. Daughter Nancy married Nelson Hopson and died about 1875. Daughter Martha married John West of Stockton, Dec. 31, 1812 and died July 25, 1877. He was born 1789. All their ten children were living in 1877: Hiram, Katherine, Lewis, Clark, Henrietta, David, William, John, Eliza Ann and Martha West. 24. Nathaniel Bird (page 55). Had a son Amos born 1789 who lived near Jamestown. Also a son Ira R. who lived at Ypsilanti, Mich. where he died 1840. There were other children. 25. Mose~ Dustin (page 58). Also listed in Erie County, Pa. Revolutionary soldiers as he lived for a time at Harbor Creek. His wi:fe, Mercy, died in Ripley Feb. 27, 1846. One daughter, Cornelia, married Oct. 15, 1839 Lorenzo F. Phelps of Westfield. An other daughter was Sarah, born 1790, who married Thomas Curtis of Stratford, N. H.· It is thought that another daughter married a Lucas and lived at Stratford or nearby. The Mercy Dustin, born :1797, who married 1819 at Harbor Creek, Pa. Darius ~rton Jr. was probably also a daughter or Moses Dustin. The accounting division of the Pension Office shows that he died in Coos Co., N. H. Feb. 24, 1852, leav ing no widow. Joshua Marshall was administrator of the pensioner's estate and certified that the pen sioner had resided in the towns of Stratford and Stark for one and one-half years prior to his death and preceding that had lived in New York. It is probable that he had another daughter. A Lucy Dustin married in Ripley, Ira Loomis, who was born before 1800. 26. Oliver Stetson (page 63). Was born 1?56. Married Jeanette Anderson. 27. Peletiah Rice (page 62). Married 1777 Mary Dutcher, born 1755. He was son of Charles and Rachel (Wheeler) Rice. Children: Elizabeth, married 1796 Benjamin Hutchins; Mary, married Low Miniger; Charlotte born Oct. 1773, married 1802 Almon White; Charity, married Ephraim Ash; Sarah, married Thomas Klumph; John, married Catherine Ashley; Lester, married Charlotte Miniger; Thomas, married Anna--. 27a. Joseph Thayer (page 63). Was born, according to family records, in Warren, Litchfield Co., Conn. May 4, 1754. Married May 8, 1776 Abigail Sacket, born 1758 in Hebron, Conn. daughter o-£ Jonathan Jr. and Hannah (Phelps) Sacket. About 1?80 he removed from Kent, Conn. to Thetford, Vt. and sometime later to Chautauqua Co. , N. Y. He and his wife were early members of the First Presbyterian Society organjzed 1809 at Westfield. They had eleven children who ma tured: Joseph Jr., married Mercy Atwell; Reuben; Irene; Lodema, married Robert Cook; Abigail; Naomi, married Joseph· Dart; Myra, married Daniel Curtis7 Minerva, married Davi·d Fox; Anna; Samuel; Harriet, married Waterman Tinkcom. 28. John Fairchild {page 71). In East Ripley Cemetery is a well preserved stone inscribed: "John Fairchilds died Oct. 31, 1834 aged 87 yrs. 6 mos. 15 ds. 11 His pension application states that he was born at Norwalk, Conn. April 15, 174?. Was draf'ted from Connecticut. 29. Phineas Bidwell (page 71). Died in Stockton, Nov. 5, 1836. (Mayville Sentinel, Nov. 11, 1836) 30. Ephraim Willard (page 72). This name also .found in Erie County, Pa. Revolutionary soldie~s. Born Dec. 21, 1759 - ca.me .from New Braintree, Mass. - died Oct. 8, 1837 at Harbor Creek, Pa. a-t the home o.f his son, Leonard. Buried in East Ripley, N. Y. Cemetery. A badly worn grave stone bears his -ini tials, E.W. and nearby his wife's grave is•marked M. W. He applied ·for pension May 1818, a resident o:r Ripley, N .- Y., and July 14, 1835 he a-sked to have payments transferred to Harbor Creek, Pa. Enlisted first June 1, 1775 in Capt. Jonathan Danforth's Co., Col. Brewer's Regt. o.f Mass. His famjly record was filed wi~h his applicatio·n. He married at Granville, N. Y. Dec. 17, 1790 Mindwell Loomis, daughter o.f Seth Loomis, also a Revolutionary soldier. She was born March 30, 1769. Children: Elizabeth 1791, married Joseph Shadduck; Electa 1793 probably died young; James 1797; Porter 1799; Leonard 1801; Electa Ann 1803, married William Miniger; Minerva 1807-1829; Annona 1810-1828; Frances 1821. 31. John Abbey (not on list). Born Aug. 22, 171+3 Windham, Conn. Married about 1764 Abial Averill. He served as sergeant in the Vermont Militia £rom Westminster. He and his wire are said to be buried in the Abbey Cemetery, Arkwright S11mmi t near Cherry Creek. Chil dren: Ebenezer 1765-i791; Abigail 1767; John Jr. 1770-?5; Olive 1772-74; Amos 1774; Olive 1776-78; Mary 1778; Abial 1781; John 1783; Phebe 1785; David 1?88. (From Walter F. Brown, Albion, N. Y. 1932). 32. Abraham Burden ·(not on list). In the East Ripley Cemetery is a well preserved stone inscribed: "Abraham Burden, a native of New Jersey and a soldier of the Revolution, Died April 21, 1835 aged 82 yrs." This record seems to tie this man to the pensioner, Abraham Burden (S .44703), but why he was buried in Ripley is a problem. This pensioner was paid to March 4, 1835. He applied .for pension April 23, 1818, a resident of Seneca, Ontario Co. N. Y. aged 62 yrs. He gave his services as enlisted from Woodbridge, N.J. in Col. Martin's 4th Regt., Capt. Wm. Bond's Co • .for one year and transferred to Capt. Joseph Anderson's Co. in Col. Dayton's 3rd Regt. - completed his three years and was discharged. Previous to this time, he had served five months with Capt. Thomas Heady's Co., Col. Martin's Regt. Aug. 19, 1820 he submitted•: a property schedule and listed his famjly as follows: himself aged 65 - wife 42. Children: Mary 18, Phebe 16 ("who have lert home and care .for themselves") - Nancy 14, Asel 12, Freeman 10, Lynes 6, Eliza Ann 3, and Elmore 6 mos. A letter is on file Sept. 2, 1839 from ~_Arbor, Mich. from Martin Smith in behalf of Mary Buren, widow of Abraham Burden who lived and died in Ontario Co., N. Y. and was a pensioner. "The widow is here, has been sick and is in want." Feb. 21, 1888, a letter from Chelsea; Mich. from Mrs. Eliza A. Harrington stated that she was a daughter of Abraham Burden and wife Mary and wished to know if any pension was due her, age 70, and her brother, a very old man. Phineas Cole (not on list). The American Eagle, Westfield, N. Y. issue-of June 27, 1832 has this item: "Died in Westfield June 11.11832, Phineas Cole, Hero of Revolution, aged about ·18. 11 Two Phineas Coles served in Mass. Regt., one from Bradford and the other from Washington and each are in 1?90 census of those towns. Horace and Abigail Cole joined the Westfield Presbyterian Church in 1830 but have not been further traced. 34. Gardiner Gilbert (not on list). Born in Hebron, Conn. April 15', 1?5'8 - died 1n·v111enova, N. Y. March 3, 1838. Married 1st at Hebron, Conn. June 1778 Ann Lathrop, born at Giliad, Conn. Sept. 4, 1760 - died Nov. 6, 1826. Married 2nd-at Sparta, N. Y. April 10, 1830, Mary Sowders. He served as Sergeant in the 12th Conn. Militia •. Applied for pension June 2, 1831 which was allowed. His widow was also allowed a pension and was living 1859 at Wayland, N. Y. He is said to have had by first marriage 6 daughters and one son, by 2nd marriage, one son~ His known chil dren are: Laura born May 29, 1785' married Joseph Delano; Elizabeth born March 1, 1790, ma.rri~d Rev. William Blanchard. By 2nd wife his child was William born 1832, lived at Cohocton, N. Y. (Foregoing from _Rev.Hermans. Sidener, St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Canton, O. 1935). 35. John Hall (not the John Hall on page 59). In the will of John Hall of the township of Carroll, made Apr. 9, 1833, proved July 8, 1833, is this bequest to John Hall Jr.: "Monies I am now or hereafter entitled to on account of services in the Revolu tionary War. Application papers sent in by Chancey Tucker of Fredonia." No trace of these papers can be found by the pension department. This item from Fredonia Censor may refer to above John Hall Jr.: "Married in Charlotte, Jan. 12, 1832. Mr. John Hall Jr. to Miss Dolly Hall, daughter of Mr. Aaron Hall of ·cherry Valley." Cyrenus Howard (not on list). "Died in Poland, H. Y. Oct. 3, 1843, Cyrenus Howard, Revolutionary soldier 11 aged- 92. : {Newspaper item) This name is not found in. any printed list at hand of Revolutiona.ry soldiers in New York or New England nor in the 1790 census of those states. 36a. Alexander Wilson (not on list). Fredonia•censor gave his death Sept. 7, 1843 stating that he was ~ormerly of Westfield, aged 8~. His tQmbstone at South Harbor Creek Methodist Cemetery is inscribed: "Born June 15, 1761, -died Sept. 7, 1843, aged 82_yrs. A Revolutionary soldier." He married May 18, l78lf. at-Stone Arabia, N. Y., Catherine Davison, born March 30, 1?64, died Nov. 21, 181.t-9. Enlisted first in th_.e 7th ~ss. Regt. under Capt. Asa Coburn, Oct. 1778 •. Had eleven children: John; Alexander; Margaret; Jane, who died young; and only two are known of the others; Jane who married ~q.ward Bowen, and Polly born ·about 1788 who_married a Rice. This ._man is also :round in Erie County, Pa. Revolutionary soldiers. 3.7. Robert Riddell (not on list). Born in Bedford, N. H. May 11,. 1744. Removed from Colrain, Mass. to Otsego Co. N. Y. and thence to Ripley, N. Y. where he died Feb. 20, 1828. Buried in East Ripley Cemetery, He married Jane McGee who died in Otsego Co. N. Y. April 5, 1805. She was born at Deer:rield, Mass. Oct. 23 1747. Children: Mary 1769, Thomas 1?71, Hugh 1774, Betsey 1781, William 1783, Robert Jr. 1786, Jane 1789, Anne 1?93. (See Riddell Genealogy) He served from Colrai~, Mass. as private 1777, in Capt. Hugh McClallan' s Co., Col. David Field's Regt. As sergeant 1779, as 1st Lieut. in various Hampshire Co. Regts. in 1780. 37a. William Clark (not on list). Adams Historical Gazet teer of Cattaraugus Co. N. Y. states that William Clark, a Revolutionary soldier, came to Leon in 1831 and one year later removed to Cherry Creek, Chautau qua Co. where he died about 1840. His wife .was Abigail Hudson who died be~ore the family came to Western New York. His son, Hudson Clark, born Jan.2? ~ 1784, married May 1810 Lucy Marsh and died in Cherry Creek 1847, leaving several children. This name has not been identiried among the many William Clarks who served in Conn., Mass., Vermont and elsewhere. 38. William Simmons (not on list). A native of Rhode Island, came to Fluvanna where he is buried. Said _to have served through the Revolution. Married a Miss Swain. Had three sons and three daughters. One of the sons. was Walter, born 1818, married Rox ana Lyons. (From page 496 Biographical Cyc1opedia, Chautauqua County, N. Y. 1891). David.Tennant; Delinda 1802, married Moses Asel Tennant; Clarissa 1804, married Henry Gay. John Tennant married second a widow, name 11nk:nown, Had one daughter, Sarah, married a Reynolds. Served 9 months from March 31, 1776 with Capt. Ransom; four months from Oct. 1?77 with Capt. William Baxter; six months from April 1778 with Capt. Ebenezer Rogers; drafted May 1779 under Capt. James Ransom; was at New London Sept. 6, 1781 when it was burned and re ceived a shot in the thigh. Had a sister, Ellis Warner at Springrield, N. Y. 41. Christian Wetsell (not on list).
