Page 415-416: Preston Carl Upshaw (family sketch): Although beginning his career as an educator, Preston Carl Upshaw early joined the Retail Credit Company, a key firm among Atlanta’s business organizations, whose organization for obtaining credit and character reports is of international scope. He is vice president, director and operating manager of this firm, and vice president and director of two of its subsidiary corporations. A native of Loganville, Georgia, Mr. Upshaw was born July 28, 1902 and is a son of Preston Calhoun and Lena (Francis) Upshaw, both of whom are now deceased. He is a graduate of the University of Georgia’s School of Business Administration in the class of 1922. For two years after graduation, he was instructor in the School of Commerce of the University of Georgia. In 1924, Mr. Upshaw joined the Retail Credit Company, Inc., and after several months’ special training he was made an instructor in the firm’s Managerial Training School. He served in various assignments on methods and procedures and in various home office staff capacities. In 1932, he was promoted to assistant vice president in the sales department, and four years later was sent to Cincinnati, Ohio as division manager for the firm in that city. He became division manager in Boston, Massachusetts in 1940. Returning to Atlanta in 1943, Mt. Upshaw assumed the responsibilities of associate operating manager. He was elected vice president in 1945; became vice president and operating manager in 1946; and in 1950 was elected a director of the firm. Mr. Upshaw is also a vice president and director responsible for the operation of two subsidiary corporations: the Retailers Commercial Agency, Inc., and the Credit Bureau, Inc. Mr. Upshaw’s fraternities are Beta Gamma Sigma, Alpha Kappa Psi, Sigma Upsilon and Phi Kappa Phi. He is a member of the Kiwanis Club and the Capital City Club in his own city. In Atlanta on January 20, 1927, Preston Carl Upshaw married Sophie Daves Wright, adopted daughter of the late Arminius Wright, her maternal uncle. Her natural parents were Joel Thomas Daves and Sophie (Wright) Daves, now deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Upshaw, who reside at 1671 West Paces Ferry Road, Northwest, are the parents of two children: 1. Sophie Anne, born February 18, 1929. 2. Preston Carl, Jr., who was born April 2, 1936. Mrs. Sophie (Wright) Upshaw is a communicant of the First Presbyterian Church and Preston Carl Upshaw, Jr., is a member of the Trinity Presbyterian Church, both of Atlanta.

Page 511: Obituaries, 1967: Dr. Charles Bell Upshaw, 76, had been obstetrician and gynecologist in Atlanta for fifty years. A graduate of Emory Medical School, he was clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at his alma-mater for forty-five years. He served in the

Medical Corps in World War I and came back to his home town to serve as obstetrician to two generations. He was a member of St. Mark, the Rotary Club, and the Piedmont Driving Club.

Miss Zula Upshaw, aged 31 years, died at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.P. Upshaw, in East Point, Tuesday night at 10:30 o’clock. She is survived by her parents, one sister, Miss Beulah Upshaw, and two brothers, Mont and G.W. Upshaw. Her body will be taken to Luthersville, Ga., Thursday morning for funeral and interment.
