The tone behind what I am asked is usually one of exasperation because the questioner begins with the assumption that unlike in `our day`, as they frequently put it, our young people appear not to be getting any real grounding in what, in particular the Christian Faith is about. Now, this is obviously a huge topic and my instinct is that the picture is probably somewhat mixed. However this gives me the opportunity firstly to say that, from first-hand experience I am aware that the staff and Governors of our own St. Martin and St. Mary Church of England Primary School are doing a splendid job where this is concerned. Secondly, once you start talking about Religious Education you`re soon reminded of what a hugely important and emotive matter the education of our young people can be and raising the question of RE means we find ourselves drawn into an even bigger debate which touches on what it means to be `British` and how best to draw together a nation of diverse origins. Part of the problem is that fear, misunderstanding and xenophobia are lurking in the background and candidly such a cocktail of issues often doesn`t make for an edifying or seemly discussion. As this debate unfolds, however I would like to offer one observation. In the midst of this current furore we have begun to hear calls for the removal of Religious Education from the curriculum all together. Perhaps you might expect me to contradict this, since I clearly have a vested interest given the number of excellent Church schools in our county. But being as neutral and pragmatic as I can it would seem to me that this is actually the time to increase and improve the provision of Religious Education in schools. I make this observation largely because amidst all the rhetoric we forget that the real challenge that we face is not the presence of `faith` itself but candidly the presence of `bad` or should we say `warped` faith. Indoctrination, coercion and manipulation (whether religious or secular) have no place in our schools but to deprive young people of a good grounding in what it might mean to be a person of faith and why a multitude of cultures choose to live as they do is to fail to prepare them for the world as it is; a world of many faiths and none. 6 The United Kingdom and indeed much of Western Europe may wish, at this stage in our development to believe otherwise but the bottom line is that `God` is not going away. Opponents of Religious Education simply fail to grasp this and if they have their way, I would humbly suggest they will run the risk of entrenching ignorance, fear and prejudice. It`s important that we hold our schools in prayer. The nurturing of the young is a good and worthy task and the presence of Religious Education is a reminder that education has a broader purpose that fitting children for the workplace. It also has rather a lot to do with equipping them for life.
