2010.2011 annual report from our music director

“Peter Oundjian chose this heaven-storming symphony The Symphony Orchestra’s 89th season, and my seventh to open his seventh season as TSO Music Director, and as Music Director, was one of many highlights and personal favourites. delivered the most satisfying performance I’ve ever heard from him with this fine orchestra. He did so, We welcomed classical music’s biggest stars here in Toronto and on our tours. The TSO was joined by Lang Lang, Renée Fleming, paradoxically, by countering Mahler’s restlessness with Joshua Bell, Dame Evelyn Glennie, and Yuja Wang as well as renowned conductors James Conlon, Stéphane Denève, and patience. He let each turn in the symphony’s convoluted Nicholas McGegan. We were fortunate to perform the works of progress have a full opportunity to weigh on our great contemporary composers including John Adams, Tan Dun, and Canadian R. Murray Schafer. consciousness. He reminded us, in the best possible way, that large truths in music often hide in the small details.” The 2010/2011 season was an exciting year of touring for the Orchestra. It was thrilling to lead the orchestra on its annual Northern Residency Tour to North Bay and Timmins, then to – ROBERT EVERETTCGREEN, Ottawa and Montreal, as well as on two tours to the United THE GLOBE AND MAIL, SEPTEMBER 24, 2010 States. The first, a six city tour of the leading venues in Florida with fellow Canadian and friend, violinist James Ehnes, and the second, a triumphant return to Carnegie Hall with the great Itzhak Perlman where he performed Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1.

The season included programmes that allowed us to focus on specific works and composers. Along with the annual Mozart and New Creations Festivals, we celebrated the 150th anniversary of the birth of Gustav Mahler by opening the season with his Symphony No. 2, “Resurrection” and closing the Masterworks Series in June with his Symphony No. 5 in a most memorable “Late Night” concert presentation. In October 2010, we commemorated the 100th birthday of American composer Samuel Barber. The all-Barber programme was a wonderful way to draw attention to Barber’s special creative genius. The season also introduced the Exposed series – three concerts that allowed the orchestra and the audience to explore what makes orchestral masterpieces just that.

For making such a wonderful season of music possible, I thank the members of the administrative staff and the orchestra for their hard work and dedication, and the audience members and supporters of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. The enthusiastic presence of our patrons in the hall, and the support provided behind the scenes, truly brings the music to life.

Sincerely,

Peter Oundjian Conductors’ Podium Sponsor MUSIC DIRECTOR

Serving Communities Across Ontario In September 2010, the sixth annual Northern Residency tour took the Orchestra to North Bay and Timmins where Music Director Peter Oundjian and the Orchestra performed two evening performances for the public. The Orchestra also presented five curriculum-based Student Concerts, performed dozens of in-school concerts, and led masterclasses – in total reaching more than 10,000 enthusiastic young people!

“Thank you TSO, for sharing your wonderful music with us. I love the elaborate sounds of the classical instruments. I am very proud that your orchestra is part of Canada. The music sounded like the actual composers. Thank you very much.”

BLAKE, ST. HUBERT CATHOLIC SCHOOL, NORTH BAY, ON

“….I was amazed at how good [the TSO] was, but my favourite instrument was the trombone. It is cool and they did a wonderful job. I think everyone liked it and they must practice a lot, like since they were nine, to be that good!

MORGAN, NORTHEASTERN CATHOLIC SCHOOL, TIMMINS, ON Enriching the Community During the 2010/2011 season, the TSO continued its tradition of providing extensive curriculum-based education programmes and performances, enhancing the learning experiences of young people throughout Toronto. The TSO presented 23 Student Concerts at Roy Thomson Hall with over 48,000 young people in attendance. “Mornings with the TSO” brought an additional 2,000 high school music students to the hall to experience a professional orchestra in rehearsal.

TSO musicians also took educational initiatives into the classroom, directly interacting with the students by demonstrating their instruments through the “Preludes” programme, as well as helping with young people to write their own piece of music through the “Adopt-A-Player” programme. More than 12,000 young people in the GTA participated in these unique programmes.

“Thank you so much for such a wonderful afternoon of music and entertainment last week. My students and I thoroughly enjoyed the performance. We are very grateful that the TSO offers subsidized tickets as our students are very unlikely to go to the symphony otherwise. Thank you again for such a rare and very appreciated experience.”

15 Instrument making at the first Mini Maestro’s Day, April 2011 toronto symphony volunteer committee report

During the 88th year of the Toronto Symphony Volunteer Committee (TSVC), members continued to devote much time and energy to the TSO’s curriculum-based education programmes through involvement with the “Adopt-A-Player” programme, “Preludes”, and “Mornings with the TSO”.

Under the leadership of President Heather Oda, in partnership with a dedicated Board and 220 members, the TSVC increased their gift to the TSO by more than $60,000 over the 2009/2010 season with a total gift of $193,000. This gift was a result of successful fundraising events held by the TSVC throughout the year.

The Fine Wine Auction marked its 20th anniversary and was a great success. Generously hosted by CIBC, bidding was active and the revenue goal was surpassed. To further celebrate 20 years of the Fine Wine Auction, a second event was held – An Evening with Château Margaux – with owner Corinne Mentzelopoulos (a benefactor of the very first Fine Wine event) present.

The TSVC gift supports TSO operations, education activities, and the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra. The TSVC has also endowed two orchestra chair positions – the Toronto Symphony Volunteer Committee Principal Trumpet Chair and the Toronto Symphony Volunteer Committee Principal Flute Chair.

The TSVC is dedicated to supporting the Toronto Symphony Orchestra by expanding awareness of its concert and education programmes within the community and beyond.

16 17 Young Leadership Council event attendees enjoy a performance from TSO musicians at Movies and Melodies, February 2011 report to donor community

The Toronto Symphony Orchestra is fortunate to have many loyal and generous supporters. Once again, Friends and Maestro’s Club donors increased their support over the previous year and the number of Maestro’s Club donors increased. Despite challenging economic conditions, the number of donors to the TSO remained stable at almost 6,500 for the 2010/2011 fiscal year.

A growing number of donors are choosing to include the TSO in their estate plans, and each year the support received from bequests increases. Legacy Giving ensures the Orchestra’s future stability and growth, guaranteeing that its musical excellence will be available for future generations. Thanks to a generous $300,000 challenge gift from the Toronto Symphony Foundation, along with $50,000 from Board member Bob Corcoran, the TSO was able to raise an additional $700,000 for operations before the fiscal year end. That significantly contributed to the organization’s financial success. Together with the support of individuals, corporations, and foundations, the TSO annual campaign raised almost $5.3 million.

Looking to the future, a new volunteer leadership and donor community, the Young Leadership Council, launched during 2010/2011. The young professionals who are part of this growing group are actively creating the future of the TSO and bringing dynamic influence to Toronto’s arts scene.

The continued philanthropic support of the TSO’s generous donors illustrates the important role that the TSO plays in the cultural fabric of Toronto. The Toronto Symphony Orchestra thanks its committed donors for their loyal and dedicated support of live orchestral music in our great city.
