This Monday is a big one for our school's Athletic Department. If you have the time, please consider coming out in support of not only our teams -- the boys JV and Varsity teams as well as the girls Varsity team all will play games -- but many of our other fall and winter athletes. Cheer again for our State Champion Girls Varsity Soccer team, our County Champion JV and Varsity Cheer teams, and celebrate for a final time the accomplishments of our 2018 State Champion Boys Varsity Basketball team who will have their banner unveiled. In addition, the new Varsity Football Coach will be introduced and there will be a celebration of all of our Lady Gators. Festivities start at 4 p.m.

The deadline for BCPS' annual stakeholders survey is quickly approaching. If you have not yet taken the survey, I encourage you to do so before the February 24 deadline. It only takes a few minutes and gives parents, as well as students, an opportunity to weigh in on school system and school-specific items ranging from safety to communication to teaching. In the interest of all of our students, their teachers, and everyone employed by BCPS, we all should take a few minutes to offer our opinions. The survey is multiple choice and in broad terms asks you to note things you are satisfied with as well as those that need improvement.

Have a good week! Chris Christine Hagan President, PHHS PTSA 2018-2019 School Year [email protected]

From the Principal's Desk

Dear Parents,

Report cards were distributed to students on Thursday, February 7. Please ask you child to show you their report card, if they have not already done so. Make contact with your child's teacher if you have concerns.

Congratulations to Coach Matt Smoot who was named Soccer Coaches "Coach of the Year." The Girls' Varsity team with coaches Smoot and Donovan were honored yesterday in Annapolis at the State House for their State Championship win.

I attended the rescheduled NHS induction on Tuesday evening. Kudos to the student officers and Ms. Turner for organizing and running such a nice event. The National Honor Society recognizes students who have excelled academically and through service. The keynote speaker was Smitha Mahesh, an alumnus and ex-NHS member who is currently studying at Johns Hopkins University.

We held a suicide awareness assembly for the students on Thursday. We do not hold many assemblies during the year because it takes away from instructional time; however, in this case we felt it was worth the time. Statistically, suicide is now the second leading cause of death for teenagers in America.

The basketball teams finished the regular seasons with wins over Eastern Tech on Friday night. It was senior night for the basketball team and the cheerleading team.

Kudos to the cheerleading teams for their county championship wins.

Kudos too to the students listed below for winning Scholastic Art Awards: Gold: (They will move on to the next stage.)

Special Thanks! Our organization survives and thrives due to the generosity and support of others. We count on our parents, the students and staff of the school, and the strong support of our alumni, but we would be remiss if we did not also thank those businesses that support us on an ongoing basis throughout the year. The contributions made to our organization both financially and through in-kind gifts means a lot to us and our success and for that reason PHHS PTSA acknowledges the following businesses:

The Avenue at White Marsh: Each summer The Avenue provides our PTSA with the opportunity to rent chairs at their Shop & Eat to the Beat concert series on Fridays and Saturday nights. This is a wonderful opportunity for our PTSA to be in the community, and put us on the path to reaching our financial goals for the year.

Greg's Driving School: As mentioned earlier, Greg's has been a huge supporter of our PTSA, making a donation to our organization for every student that takes a class at the High School.

Chick-fil-A: The biggest supporter of our Golden Gators Program, Chick-fil-A donates heavily to our student recognition program.

Self Storage One of Perry Hall: Self Storage One provides us with a storage facility for the items we collect for our Clothing Drive.

Jerry's Toyota: Jerry's remains one of our biggest supporters of our After Promo Party donating money for prizes and food in hopes of creating a safe environment for continued fun the night of the prom.

Safeway: A big donor to our organization last fall, Safeway is hosting the drawing for The Great Gator Restaurant Raffle this December.

Giant: A donor to our staff Welcome Back Breakfast this August. Starbucks: A frequent donor of coffee to PTSA events throughout the school year.

The All American Steakhouse & Sports Theater, Applebee's, Bar Louie, Basta Pasta, Bertucci's Italian Restaurant, Bill Bateman's Bistro, The Bowman Restaurant, Buffalo Wild Wings, Carrabba's Italian Grill, Casa Mia's White Marsh, Conrad's Seafood Restaurant, Das Bierhalle, Della Rose's Avenue Tavern, DeNiro's Pizza, DeSantis Pizza Grill & Bar, Dominick's Pizza of Perry Hall, The Green Turtle Sports Bar & Grille, Gunpowder Lodge, Italian Sensation, Ledo Pizza, Lib's Grill, Liberatore's Ristorante, Looney's Pub, MidiCi The Neopolitan Pizza Company, Olive Garden, Outback Steakhouse, P.F. Chang's, Red Brick Station, Seasons Pizza, Silver Spring Mining Company and Slice on The Avenue--all are supporters of our Great Gator Restaurant Raffle.

Pop Tabs for Ronald McDonald House PHHS PTSA continues to support the Ronald McDonald House by collecting pop tabs. Pop tabs are the little tabs on soda, tuna fish cans, soup cans, etc. The money raised from the collection of these allows families to stay in Ronald McDonald House while a family member undergoes treatment at a nearby hospital. Collection containers can be found in the main office and the library. Please support this great cause!

Helpful Resources for Students Considering a Career in Teaching Maryland suffers from a shortage of teachers in the science, language, math, special education, and career and technical education disciplines. The U.S. Department of Education's Teacher Shortage Areas Nationwide Listings Report shows grade levels in Maryland from pre-k to 12th are in need of well-trained teachers.

Despite this need, teaching requirements vary by state, which can confuse students who aim to become educators. To combat this problem and help students plan for the future, TeachingDegree.org published a series of guides detailing the process of obtaining a teaching degree and certificate in each state, as well as a guide to financial aid in Maryland. The guides are valuable resources for anyone navigating their education degree choices.
