  • The Haymakers & George F
THE HAYMAKERS New World Records 80234 The Haymakers & George F. Root by Dena J. Epstein The Haymakers does not fit into the traditional picture of American musical history: It is a secular cantata on an American subject and was written in 1857, when large-scale works were not yet supposed to have developed. Its composer, George F. Root, is usually described as the writer of a few rousing Civil War songs like “The Battle Cry of Freedom” (see notes for New World Records 80202-2, Songs of the Civil War), moral ditties for children (80251-2, Where Home Is), and a great deal of sentimental rubbish. Nothing in this image prepares the listener for the charm and vitality of The Haymakers or explains how this work came to be written. Another unanswered question is why its initial popularity was succeeded by oblivion. The answers seem to lie in Root’s character and training and their relation to the world in which he lived. The theories of American musical history that postulate two streams of development—the “cultivated,” or “genteel,” and the “vernacular”—make no provision for a work that was neither consciously related to European models nor strictly popular, but drew on the English glee while using indigenous themes to appeal to American performers and audiences. It appears that American musical history, like Root’s approach to composition, is more complex than has been recognized: The Haymakers represents an aspect of American music that has been completely overlooked. George Frederick Root was born in Sheffield, Massachusetts, in 1820, the oldest of eight musical children born to musical parents.

  • Nick Enright: an Actor’S Playwright Edited by Anne Pender and Susan Lever Editions Rodopi, 220Pp, $106 .95, 2008 ISBN 9789042024601 Reviewed by Michael Buhagiar
Playwright of Many Parts Nick Enright: An Actor’s Playwright Edited by Anne Pender and Susan Lever Editions Rodopi, 220pp, $106 .95, 2008 ISBN 9789042024601 Reviewed by Michael Buhagiar This twelfth volume in the Rodopi Australian Playwrights series is a welcome first collection of essays devoted to one of Australia’s finest theatre practitioners. Nick Enright was recognised, before his death in 2003 at the age of fifty-two, as a gifted actor, teacher and director, and a prolific playwright unusually possessed of the capacity both to create runaway successes, and deeply to engage and explore the self as all great art should. Part one of this publication consists of eleven essays devoted to the key plays, as well as an examination of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s Enright archive; part two includes memoirs from four of his friends and colleagues. Anne Pender gives an informative overview of Enright’s life and career. His fascination with the theatre began with an epiphany at the age of six, when John Bell, his neighbour in Maitland at the time, showed him a toy theatre with scenes from Macbeth. Sent to Riverview College for his secondary schooling with the intention that he eventually enter the family profession of the law, he starred there, performing, for example, the remarkable scholarly feat of comparing, in a final year exam, the Greek (Sophocles) and French (Anouilh) versions of Antigone in the original languages. Yet his traumatic experiences at Riverview, as a sensitive gay youth misplaced in the militaristic milieu of the Vietnam War years, would provide the material for his semi-autobiographical play St.

He had already inspired many people, he had been to New York and done well there, and in 1979 he produced, with Terence Clarke, his glitteringly sophisticated but very Aussie adaptation of Goldoni’s The Venetian Twins as Nimrod Theatre’s contribution to the transitional season at the Sydney Opera House, after the collapse of the Old Tote Theatre and before the establishment of the Sydney Theatre Company. It was a great success. But something was missing. He didn’t seem, in the 1980s, to have a lot to say. His late contribution to the legend-building musical history plays of the New Wave, On the Wallaby, came across as rather retro in 1980. The New Theatre had been doing that sort of thing for decades. The musical Summer Rain (1983), also with Clarke as composer, was delightful but seemed very light in a time when Louis Nowra and Stephen Sewell were producing their early great plays. The romantic farce Daylight Saving (1989) did much more with the genre than any other Australian playwright had done, but it seemed to belong to an earlier period. Then, in the 1990s, he suddenly turned round and surprised and shocked us all.

He was born in the bleak but beautiful coastal region of Suffolk, in the east of England, and commentators often claim that his music shares an aesthetic with that region’s starkness. His passion for composition began at an early age: his surviving juvenilia number nearly seven hundred works. He studied privately with Frank Bridge, one of the more unusual voices in English composition.
