4 IHSAA - Pure Spirit. Pure Sport. Pure INDIANA! 2011-12 IHSAA Board of Directors and Executive Committee The IHSAA is governed by its legislative body, the Board of Directors. Composed of 19 individuals elected by member school principals from three legislative districts, they serve staggered three-year terms. Twelve board seats are filled by any qualified individual (open seats), and six board seats are filled by two qualified female representatives, two qualified minority representatives, two qualified urban school representatives and one private school representative. The Board of Directors meets annually with the responsibility of establishing the Association’s By-Laws and regulations.

The Executive Committee meets monthly and is responsible for organizing and directing state tournaments and meets, interpreting the Association’s By-Laws, determining penalties for rules violations, and establishing the Association’s state office and employing a commissioner and staff to administer the Association.

At the conclusion of the state finals, the IHSAA Executive Committee will present the Mental Attitude Award to an outstanding senior participant in the volleyball state tournament. The recipient, nominated by her principal and coach, must excel in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership, and athletic ability. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, IHSAA corporate sponsor, will present a $1,000 scholarship to the school in the name of the recipient. Since 1989, over $745,000 in college scholarships have been presented by Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance to deserving high school students in Indiana.

PENN SWEEPS MUNCIE CENTRAL FOR FIRST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP In its fifth trip to the state finals, top-ranked Penn (39-1) won its final match of the season sweeping No. 3 Muncie Central, 25-18, 30-28, 25-22, for the 4A state championship at Worthen Arena in Muncie. It was the first volleyball state championship for the school and coach Lisa Pawlik and came at the hands of the team that beat them in their only other championship match appearance. Muncie Central beat Penn in the 2002 title match. It was Penn’s second victory over the Bearcats this season following a 3-1 decision on Sept. 11. Penn’s only loss of the year was a 2-1 setback to 2A champion Muncie Burris on Aug. 28. They finished by winning 33 straight matches. Penn was led by Kaitlyn Hickey’s 13 kills and Sam Heberling’s 11 kills and .474 hitting percentage. Jamie Drummer, Marquita Marshall and Jaydn’ Pegues each tallied 11 kills for Muncie Central. Drummer also was credited with 17 digs on defense. Muncie Central (34-5), coached by Wes Lyon, finished as the state runner-up for the fifth time in school history in 11 championship match apperances.

BELLMONT SWEEPS TOP-RANKED BREBEUF FOR SECOND TITLE IN FOUR YEARS In a battle between two top four teams in 3A, No. 4 Bellmont swept defending champion and top- ranked Brebeuf Jesuit 25-23, 25-14, 27-25 to take the 3A state crown. It marked the second state championship for Bellmont and head coach Craig Krull, who defeated Mishawaka Marian in the final match of 2007. A closely contested opening set saw 12 ties and four lead changes. With the score knotted at 23, consecutive kills by juniors Steph Shoup and Alex Fuelling clinched the first set for the Squaws. Bellmont utilized a steady attack to pace the early stages of the second set before winning seven of eight points, taking a 20-11 advantage. Two aces by Fuelling capped off a 25-14 set for Bellmont. In what would be the final set, the two teams traded leads nine times and shared 16 ties. Bellmont rode the performance of senior Madison Schultz, who tallied eight of her 12 total kills in the third. After Jeme Obeime’s 13 kills were a team-high for squandering match point on a service error, the Brebeuf, while junior Kristin Hullett and senior Sloane Squaws regained control, winning the final two points White both added nine. BURRIS SWEEPS TO 14TH STRAIGHT CLASS 2A TITLE The Muncie Burris volleyball dynasty continued as the top-ranked Owls swept fourth-ranked Fairfield, 25-12, 25-12, 25-11, to win the Class 2A state championship at Worthen Arena on Saturday. It was the sixth straight year the Owls had swept in the state title match. It was the Owls’ 14th consecutive 2A state title, their 95th consecutive state tournament victory and its second straight undefeated season (39-0). Burris owns an 87-match winning streak that dates back to Oct. 13, 2008. They finished 40-0 in 2009. Taylor Morey led Burris with 15 kills and a .400 hitting percentage while Chelsea Toth and Hannah Clemmons finished with 8 and 7 kills, respectively. Setter Kelsey Carr, who was named the winner of the mental attitude award following the match, finished with 36 assists. Haley Bechtel led Fairfield with five kills and tallied 10 digs on defense. Thanh Harnish is in her first season as Burris coach after taking over for the legendary Steve Shondell who departed after 34 years. It was the fifth straight year the Falcons had advanced to the state finals and second time falling to Burris in the final match (2006). Fairfield had entered the match on a 13 match win streak under coach Carla Herschberger.

LAFAYETTE CENTRAL CATHOLIC CLAIMS FIRST VOLLEYBALL STATE TITLE Lafayette Central Catholic (31-7) battled its way to the school’s first ever Class A state championship Saturday afternoon at Ball State’s Worthen Arena with a 25-9, 17-25, 25-18, 25-18 victory over Indianapolis Lutheran (27-12). Central Catholic cruised through the first set (25-9), but Lutheran picked up the second set win after enduring nine ties and four lead changes. With a 14-13 lead and senior Jordan Finke serving, the Saints rattled off five straight points to take control of the second set before closing it out at 25-17. Lutheran jumped out to an 11-6 lead in the third when Central Catholic head coach Brad McCarter called a timeout. After the break, Central Catholic rallied to score eight straight points and would not relinquish the lead. Senior Olivia Walker closed out the set with an ace, giving the Knights a 25-18 win and 2-1 lead. Lutheran was able to keep it close in the early stages of the fourth set before Central Catholic stretched their lead to 19-10. Down 14-24, the Saints narrowed the gap before a kill by junior Morgan Hainje sealed it for Central Catholic. The Knights were led by senior Olivia Walker’s game high 14 kills; senior Molly King chipped in with 11 kills and nine digs, while senior Claire Riehle added 10 kills and 12 digs of her own. Lutheran, coached by Kathy Anderson, was led by senior Jordan Finke’s seven kills and nine digs. Junior Hope Steel had a team high 11 digs, while senior Julie Myers tallied six kills and 10 digs.
