Political Entertainment Media and the Elaboration Likelihood Model: A Focus on the Roles of Motivation and Ability Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By Heather Lyn LaMarre, MPA, MA Graduate Program in Communication The Ohio State University 2009 Dissertation Committee: R. Lance Holbert, Advisor David Ewoldsen Silvia Knobloch-Westerwick Michael McCluskey Copyright by Heather Lyn LaMarre 2009 Abstract This dissertation extends the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) to the study of political communication. In particular, the project focuses on the role of ability and motivation, relative to contact with a variety of political entertainment media messages, on cognitive elaborations. Two studies were conducted to examine these political entertainment processes and effects. The first study was a 2 (ability: low, high) x 2 (media stimuli: The Daily Show, Anderson Cooper 360o) between-subjects design that examined individual-level cognitive elaboration and attitudes about the AIG executive bonus scandal involving government bailout funds. The second study was a 2 (motivation: high, low) x 2 (media stimuli: Sicko, Sicko and An American Carol) between-subjects design that examined individual-level cognitive elaboration and attitudes concerning nationalized healthcare. Results replicated traditional ELM findings. Ability and motivation had direct effects on individual-level elaboration. The main effects of ability and motivation were also found for issue-relevant and positively valenced thoughts. Message directly influenced individual-level elaborations, including total and issue-relevant thoughts. Additionally, interactions between message and ability were found for source credibility, counter-arguments, and media engagement. -

Bonnie Jenkins to Help Lead U.S. Efforts on Arms Control and International Security June 21, 2021 As President Biden's Interim National Security Strategy notes: "Global dynamics have shifted. New crises demand our attention.” It is a "moment of accelerating global challenges — from the pandemic to the climate crisis to nuclear proliferation .…" This means that our nation has no time to lose when it comes to putting in place the leadership team in government that can harness America's diplomatic power, which is essential to advancing effective solutions to address the most difficult security and foreign policy challenges. As arms control, international security, and foreign policy experts with years of experience in and out of government, we believe President Joe Biden — or any president — needs a strong and experienced team in place to address issues of international security, particularly the difficult and urgent challenges posed by nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons and the countries that possess them or that could develop them. Five months since inauguration day, the president’s nominee for one of the most important positions in this area — Amb. Bonnie Jenkins for Undersecretary of State for Arms Control and International Security — has yet to be confirmed. Further delays of this nomination will hamper our nation’s ability to put its best diplomatic foot forward at a critical time. About the Pioneer Zephyr
About the Pioneer Zephyr The Pioneer Zephyr is America’s first diesel-electric, streamlined, stainless-steel passenger train. It is located in the Museum’s Entry Hall and was renovated and conserved in 2020. History In an attempt to increase rail passenger traffic, the Burlington Zephyr was built for the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad Company (CB&Q) in 1934 by the Budd Company of Philadelphia. The Burlington Zephyr offered high-speed transportation in an elegant, streamlined, stainless steel design. It was the first diesel-electric passenger train to enter regular service. The train was renamed the “Pioneer Zephyr” in 1936 because it was the first of several diesel-powered Zephyrs built for the CB&Q. On May 26,1934, the Pioneer Zephyr left Denver and arrived in Chicago 13 hours and five minutes later to reopen the A Century of Progress World’s Fair in 1934. That single nonstop trip of 1,015 miles at record-breaking average speed of 77.6 mph changed the course of railroading and land transportation. Never before had a train traveled more than 775 miles without stopping for fuel and water. The Pioneer Zephyr, nicknamed the “Silver Streak,” was donated to the Museum of Science and Industry in 1960 and was displayed outside next to the 999 Empire State Express locomotive near the Columbia Basin. In 1997, the Museum hired Northern Rail Car of Milwaukee to restore the Pioneer Zephyr to it 1930s-era glory. The gleaming, refurbished train was then moved to a new, underground gallery at the Museum in 1998. The exhibit closed in October 2019, to make way for a completely new exhibition, opening in March 2021. -

R O U T E O F T H E Vista-Dome North Coast Limited ek BRASS CAR SIDES Passenger Car Parts for the Streamliners HO North Coast Limited Budd Dining Cars (NP 459-463, CB&Q 458) #173-29 for Con-Cor Conversion, #173-89 for Walthers Conversion Six full dining cars were delivered by Budd in 1957-58 for the Vista-Dome North Coast Limited. They were the last full diners built before the advent of Amtrak. They displaced the Pullman-Standard dining cars NP 450-455 to service on the Mainstreeter. The Budd diners operated between Chicago and Seattle until the end of BN service in 1971. Dining cars were cycled in and out of eastbound No. 26 at St. Paul Union Depot and were serviced at the nearby NP Commissary. Five of the six cars were purchased by Amtrak in 1971 and operated in the North Coast Hiawatha, and later in the "Heritage Fleet", particularly on the trains between Chicago and New York and Washington. THE STORY OF FOUNTAIN: HARD FACTS AND SOFT SPECULATION Thierry de Duve ABSTRACT Thierry de Duve’s essay is anchored to the one and perhaps only hard fact that we possess regarding the story of Fountain: its photo in The Blind Man No. 2, triply captioned “Fountain by R. Mutt,” “Photograph by Alfred Stieglitz,” and “THE EXHIBIT REFUSED BY THE INDEPENDENTS,” and the editorial on the facing page, titled “The Richard Mutt Case.” He examines what kind of agency is involved in that triple “by,” and revisits Duchamp’s intentions and motivations when he created the fictitious R. Mutt, manipulated Stieglitz, and set a trap to the Independents. De Duve concludes with an invitation to art historians to abandon the “by” questions (attribution, etc.) and to focus on the “from” questions that arise when Fountain is not seen as a work of art so much as the bearer of the news that the art world has radically changed. Mentally I was not spelling art with a capital A. — Beatrice Wood1 No doubt, Marcel Duchamp’s best known and most controversial readymade is a men’s urinal tipped on its side, signed R. Mutt, dated 1917, and titled Fountain. The 2017 centennial of Fountain brought us a harvest of new books and articles on the famous or infamous urinal. I read most of them in the hope of gleaning enough newly verified facts to curtail my natural tendency to speculate. But newly verified facts are few and far between. -

Christ Mass Carols Presented December 5, 12, & 19, 2004 Jason Allen Anderson, presenter A three-week series exploring the histories of our favorite Christmas hymns, carols, and spirituals. PREFATORY REMARKS From the start of the holiday shopping season through Christmas Eve, you will hear on average, the same 25 holiday songs about 700 times. Sound odd? Well, who wants to hear “Once in Royal David’s city” over the audio system at The Gap? No one. But they do want to hear “Jingle Bells” and “Silent Night.” Go figure. What is a carol? Carol is derived from the Middle English carole and was originally a short, choral dance. The subject matter of carols goes well beyond Christmas. There are New Year, Epiphany, Holy Week, Easter, Summer, Spring, Harvest, and Winter carols. The trouble is, we just don’t like to hear those much! Our three-week journey begins with pre-Victorian Christmas carols (12/5), continues with Victorian carols (12/12), and ends with distinctly American carols (12/19). If you enjoy this, let me know. If there are parts that just don’t work for you, let me know that as well. If I mention a term with which you’re not familiar, pop up your hand and ask me to explain. PRE-VICTORIAN CAROLS Until the Puritan revolution in England, Christmas was not simply a single feast day in the church year, but a season spanning from Christmas Day to the Feast of the Epiphany (the famous 12 Days of Christmas). 12 Days of celebration required many carols, most of which were passed on orally. -

Aug 20, Michael Brown rated it liked it Shelves: series-reading. Mason finally goes into court. First time in a long while. No Trask. No Berger. And Paul Drake is still a bit of a wimp. Mason is far more a detective so far. And his main antagonist is Sgt. Holcomb and over the past few books it is obvious that he has some mental issues. Good mystery but not my favorite of the series so far by far. -
