Tourism is Colorado’s largest in- dustry. As a result, the three Commis- sioners have responsibilities unlike other local governmental officials in the United States. Most tourists, as well as most residents of the state, encounter the Colorado mountains in Jefferson County, be- tween the upslope approaches to the Hogback and the western boundary of the County. It is fair to say the impact of this area is one of the most crucial large scale planning decisions in the State of Colorado. Although the prairie portions of Jefferson County can be the subject of ordinary planning procedures, the mountain portions of the County must be approached with the desire to en- hance what nature has provided, if possible; if not, the least the Commis- sioners can permit is to avoid harming an irreplaceable asset. Due to the alignment of Interstate 70, the Central Mountains Community Plan becomes the heart of the Jefferson County mountain planning process. The preceding letter received at the County is illustrative of the feelings of residents within the Central Mountains Community Plan area. Vernon, Bear Creek and Clear Creek - is rich with memories of Colorado’s early mining days. That these canyons are the “Gateways to the Rockies” is a statement just as true today as it was in 1859 when miners began hauling their equipment up the old Ute Indian trails to the gold mining near Idaho Springs, Central City, Leadville and Breckenridge. Doing so involves balancing residents’ desire for outdoor recreation with their desire to see us preserve and protect lands.1 In 2015, we progressed toward our vision in new and dynamic ways. Table of Actions We made significant land acquisitions, celebrated trailhead openings, expanded education offerings, and lauded volunteers, who set a record Commit 2 for service hours. We restored and advanced trails, invited visitors to become stewards, and initiated a countywide effort to connect youth Plan 3 and nature. All the while, we applied conservation practices informed by staff-guided, volunteer-supported research of animal and plant life on Preserve 4 open space lands. Steward 4 In the Douglas Mountain Area, we acquired properties totaling 1,036 acres—our largest acquisition in nearly 15 years.     All Grants Awarded Through Fiscal Year 2020 INTRODUCTION AND KEY This report is a list of all grants awarded by the Colorado Historical Society’s State Historical Fund (SHF) since its inception in 1992 (state Fiscal Year 1993) through the end of Fiscal Year 2020. The amounts listed are the original award amounts. If for some reason the entire grant amount was not used (i.e. a project was terminated or was completed under budget) the full amount awarded will appear. In other instances grant awards were increased either to enable project completion or to cover the costs of easements. In these instances, the additional award amount is shown in a separate entry as an increase. In those cases where no work was accomplished and the funds were either declined by the grant recipient or were required to be returned to the SHF through rescissions, no entry will appear. For this reason, projects listed in one version of this report may not appear in later versions, and the financial information shown in this report may not be comparable to other revenue reports issued by the SHF.
