BLING! BLING! TREASURE ON THE TREASURE COAST

In Florida, every part of the coast seems to have a nickname. There’s the Gold Coast, the Sun Coast, the Space Coast. And then, there’s the Treasure Coast. Though many residents take this name for granted, we’re called the Treasure Coast for a reason. And it all dates back to a weather event in 1715. A Spanish fleet, now known as the Treasure Fleet, was sailing from Havana to Spain, when a hurricane hit. Many of the ships sank in the Sebastian Inlet area. These shipwrecks deposited gold, silver and jewels into the waters and beaches of what is now known as the Treasure Coast.

So, along with being a great place to live and work, the Treasure Coast is also an exciting place to search for buried treasure. And treasure hunters abound. In fact, in 2015, something incredible happened. On July 31, three hundred years to the day after the ships sank, a team of treasure hunters recovered gold coins off the Treasure Coast valued at $4.5 million. This incredible—and timely—haul included 350 gold coins. Nine of the coins were a type called “Royals,” which were made for Phillip V, the king of Spain. Each of these relics is valued at $300,000. What’s more amazing is that the hunters didn’t have to endure deep dives to uncover this treasure. The artifacts were discovered in six feet water off the coast of Vero Beach.

These treasure hunters aren’t the only ones who have found treasure here. In 2015, a Florida family of professional treasure hunters discovered more than $1 million worth of coins and jewelry. Over the years, regular beachcombers have also found some.

So, what’s the advice from the pros to would-be treasure hunters? They recommend looking for the high-tide line where the sand is very soft. This is where many people have been successful. But regular folk are only allowed to keep treasure found on public beaches.

If you want to learn more about the area’s treasure hunters, there are two great museums to check out. There’s Mel Fisher’s Treasure Museum in Sebastian, which tells the story of how, in 1985, the organization’s namesake discovered the main pile of the Nuestra Señora de Atocha, the largest underwater treasure find in history. On Orchid Island, you will see the McLarty Treasure Museum, located at 13180 North A1A on the barrier island. This museum depicts the history of the 1715 Spanish treasure fleet and displays its artifacts.

So, if you’re one of those would-be treasure hunters out there—there is another $400 million waiting to be discovered. Your big score might be waiting.

EAST COAST SUNRISE

In the end, more than money, more than glory, more than any of the shiny adolescent dreams once harbored, you’ve earned this.

The sound. The gray, incipient light. The company of birds and more, all waiting.

You sit, knees drawn up close, and then relax again. You breathe, as the rolling surf goes in and out.

While other noises and sounds grow, you find yourself getting quieter and quieter.

It’s almost time. There is a lightening of the mind, the heart and the sky. And there it is. The sun rising, gold, radiant, reflected on the waters that stretch to your own private beach.

Magic, served daily. The beginning again.
