6 Statement of Teaching Philosophy – Dr. Jory Basso

After an exhaustive but very enlightening nine years post-secondary education, I was exposed to a plethora of teaching styles. During observation of many diverse professors I started compiling a mental list of traits that increased and decreased a professor’s effectiveness. There was one particular professor that stood out from all the rest. He had a way of captivating his students, locking them in with laser precision, keeping them hanging on every word he spoke. I greatly admired his enthusiasm and vitality. Ever since that experience and much critical reflection I have tried to emulate his delivery and form my own passionate, enthusiastic teaching style.

A central theme to my teaching philosophy is engagement. I strive to have every lecture a memorable one in which students really enjoy the content and look forward to coming to class. There are a number of strategies I employ learned during professional development and crafting my public speaking abilities. I use body language effectively to evoke trust from my students. After hearing author Mark Bowden speak of 'Winning Body Language’ I use open hands placed at navel level to evoke a friendship response from the primitive brain (evolutionary behavioral theory). This simple act helps the student to buy in to the message and to calm the flight or fight sympathetic nervous response. They are more likely to express the hormone oxytocin (bonding) then epinephrine (adrenaline). Eye contact, gesturing, well placed pauses, vocal variety, effective use of humor, and a combination of video, whiteboard or SmartBoard, PowerPoint, and diagrams, class discussion, and case studies are all strategies I use to keep students engaged.

Drawing on 20 years of experience in the health care field I employ active learning with my students. Many of my lectures start with experience based medicine – a clinical pearl. By providing a case study at the start of class that is relevant to the content about to be covered provides context and answers the question of ‘why do we need to know this?’ These cases inevitably spark curiosity and great dialogue with students increasing engagement. Using actual medical experiences help to bookend the content and provide real world use cases of the material. During my midterm formative feedback students frequently mention this as a definitive asset in the classroom.

Another theme is, coincidently, a topic I teach in Biology – evolution. I strive to constantly evolve and consider new ways of enhancing student centered learning. One recent example of this is a Test Correction Policy I designed and implemented. This policy allows students to look up the correct answers to their previously marked tests in order to be rewarded with two marks if all corrections and learning opportunities are made. This incentivized learning has had fantastic feedback from both students and other professors. Some professors have also adopted my test correction policy in their classroom to enhance student success.

A great professor has to have empathy. As an undergraduate I can recall struggling with anything DNA related – replication, gene expression, etc. Over the years I gained mastery of the subject but I haven’t forgotten about those frustrating times trying to make sense of the textbook. When I teach a tough subject I show empathy to my students by describing the struggles I had while still respecting the very diverse students and learning styles in the classroom.

7 -2- Dr. Jory Basso – Teaching Philosophy

Ultimately, I want to leave my students with a sense of wonderment. Aspiring to ‘blow their mind’ and help to inspire a lifelong passion for Science learning.

I am forever grateful to have such a passion for learning and teaching as it is expressed by my DNA!
