Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation Until no child has AIDS. 2018 YEAR IN REVIEW

Photo: Eric Bond/EGPAF, 2019 Thank You In 2018, we celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF). We are grateful to our founders, Elizabeth Glaser, Susie Zeegen, and Susan DeLaurentis, three mothers who set out to do everything in their power to protect and help children. The strides we’ve made towards ending AIDS in children, and the positive impact we’ve made on the lives of women, children, youth and families would not be possible without you. Your support gives EGPAF a chance to continue our lifesaving work. We hope you enjoy this look at EGPAF’s 30th anniversary year!

@EGPAF Facebook.com/EGPAF @EGPAF STORY OF IMPACT Felizarda, Mozambique

Felizarda, 33, couldn’t believe her luck when she discovered that she was pregnant with twins. This was the second set of twins for this mother of seven children in Mozambique. But as a woman living with HIV, Felizarda knows it takes more than luck to raise healthy children. EGPAF is working to make sure that every woman receives care to ensure that mothers and babies are healthy.

Felizarda went to an EGPAF-supported health facility, where she received treatment so that her twins could be born HIV-free.

The health center also assigned Felizarda a mentor mother. Mentor mothers are HIV-positive women in the community who are trained to provide counseling and support to HIV-positive women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Her mentor mother counsels her by sharing her own experience and supports her in adhering to medication.

“My seven children are HIV-free thanks to the health services that I receive,” says Felizarda.

A Time for Heroes 2018 We were thrilled to celebrate EGPAF’s 30th Anniversary with over 400 supporters, celebrity heroes, and friends on Sunday, October 28th at our annual A Time for Heroes family festival!

Guests joined together at Smashbox Studios in Los Angeles, CA where kids enjoyed a variety of activities, such as drawing their favorite characters with Nickelodeon animators, taking selfies in AMC’s prop-filled photo room, and getting glammed with Blushington makeup artists! The day was capped off with an upbeat performance by HIV-positive Danish singer, Thomas Muchimba Buttenschøn.

We were proud to honor the tireless dedication and generosity of Willow Bay. Willow is EGPAF’s former Board Co-Chair and champion for children and families affected by HIV/AIDS. Willow’s leadership with EGPAF has helped us reach millions of mothers and children around the world.

10 Year in Review — 2018 “Please remember now is not the time to let up, when over 400 babies around the world contract HIV every “day. We have the technology, we have the medicine, and we have a will and a way to finish this very important mission.”

Year in Review — 2018 11 STORY OF IMPACT Rosa, Zimbabwe

As a young child, Rosa Mahlasera faced a string of heartbreaking losses, losing her brother, sister, and her father to AIDS-related illnesses. Rosa, like many in her community, was haunted by the AIDS-related deaths of these family members. When Rosa later tested positive for HIV, she grew more fearful and kept her HIV status and treatment a secret.

But Rosa was welcomed into a psychosocial support group with other healthy adolescents, where she later learned to accept her status. Rosa saw other young people with HIV, living healthy, thriving lives. She was soon trained as a community adolescent treatment supporter with support from EGPAF. In this role Rosa facilitates support groups among young people living with HIV and assists at the clinic.

Rosa believes she is in a unique position to help her peers. “I saw that so many young people are not accepting their HIV status, because they think they’re going to die,” says Rosa.

“I tell them my story, so that it will motivate them to understand that they are not alone in the world. Eventually I see myself as a senior counselor, giving hope to the hopeless.” Photos: Eric Bond/EGPAF, 2018
