“No Reason to Be Seen”: Cinema, Exploitation, and the Political by Gordon Sullivan B.A., University of Central Florida, 2004 M.A., North Carolina State University, 2007 Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of The Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Pittsburgh 2017 UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH THE KENNETH P. DIETRICH SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCES This dissertation was presented by Gordon Sullivan It was defended on October 20, 2017 and approved by Marcia Landy, Distinguished Professor, Department of English Jennifer Waldron, Associate Professor, Department of English Daniel Morgan, Associate Professor, Department of Cinema and Media Studies, University of Chicago Dissertation Advisor: Adam Lowenstein, Professor, Department of English ii Copyright © by Gordon Sullivan 2017 iii “NO REASON TO BE SEEN”: CINEMA, EXPLOITATION, AND THE POLITICAL Gordon Sullivan, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2017 This dissertation argues that we can best understand exploitation films as a mode of political cinema. Following the work of Peter Brooks on melodrama, the exploitation film is a mode concerned with spectacular violence and its relationship to the political, as defined by French philosopher Jacques Rancière. For Rancière, the political is an “intervention into the visible and sayable,” where members of a community who are otherwise uncounted come to be seen as part of the community through a “redistribution of the sensible.” This aesthetic rupture allows the demands of the formerly-invisible to be seen and considered. We can see this operation at work in the exploitation film, and by investigating a series of exploitation auteurs, we can augment our understanding of what Rancière means by the political.

Monday, May 24, 2021 | No. 169 When Star Wars opened May 25, 1977 no one but Steven Spielberg thought it would be a hit. George Lucas had been turned down by Universal, United Artists and Disney before pitching 20th Century Fox his sci-fi epic inspired by 1930's serials like Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers, the 1966 TV series Star Trek and Frank Herbert's 1965 novel Dune. Fox creative affairs chief Alan Ladd, Jr. greenlighted SW, but Fox's distribution arm never considered it a likely hit. Fox marketers wanted to change the title because moviegoers might think Star Wars was about the Vietnam War or, perhaps, superstars Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton's divorce. When Lucas screened a rough cut for some director pals, they weren't impressed. Brian De Palma reportedly called it the "worst movie" ever made. Spielberg, however, predicted SW would be "the biggest movie of all time." Lucas thought SW was doomed and skipped its premiere to vacation with Spielberg in Hawaii where they heard SW was a boxoffice phenomenon and then came up with a new project to do together -- Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), the first Indiana Jones blockbuster. Exhibitors were reluctant to book SW, thinking only kids and sci-fi buffs would buy tickets, so it opened at just 32 theatres. Two days later, it was in 43 theatres and a week later in 157. It peaked in mid-August at 1,096, a very wide run then. Produced for $11 million, its original release did $461 million domestically and $196 million abroad – huge numbers at Theatrical Poster for Star Wars, the time.

  • Weekend Box Office Results…
Monday, May 31, 2021 | No. 170 Amazon's $8.45 billion acquisition of MGM is driven by the same need for content that drove the April 1924 merger of Marcus Lowe's Metro Pictures with the Goldwyn Company. Lowe, based in New York, owned 111 theatres and needed a steady stream of pictures to play. In 1920 he paid $3 million for Hollywood-based Metro, hoping to get the necessary content. By 1924, that still hadn't happened. Metro was a small studio without strong management. Lowe was about to shut it down, but while vacationing for his health in Palm Beach he had the good fortune to meet with Goldwyn principal Frank Godsol, who also was there under doctor's orders. They were brought together by Broadway producer Lee Shubert, who as an investor in both companies knew Goldwyn was in trouble. It's unclear who gets credit for the idea, but Lowe decided to merge Metro with Goldwyn. The only problem was who would manage Metro-Goldwyn? Metro had a good distribution department, but nothing else. Goldwyn had an impressive 46 acre studio in Culver City, which it purchased in 1919 for $325,000 for the initial 16 acres. But Goldwyn, too, lacked strong management. Movie producing pioneer Samuel Goldwyn hadn't been with the company for years, having been forced out by Godsol and others. Although it sounds like Goldwyn was named after Sam, Sam had actually changed his name from Goldfish to the better sounding Goldwyn after the company was founded in 1916 and Irving Thalberg, MGM’s “Boy Wonder” Click to Watch the Academy’s Tribute named after its original partners – Goldfish and Edgar & Archibald Selwyn.

  • Film Flashback… Ghostbusters & Gremlins Opened
Monday, June 7, 2021 | No. 171 Film Flashback… Ghostbusters & Gremlins Opened on 6/8/1984 Weekends with two major openings that aren't targeted to the same audience typically boost box office business – as we just saw Memorial Day weekend. There was, however, a time when studios didn't always avoid going head-to-head with the wrong films. The classic example of what not to do occurred June 8, 1984 when Columbia opened Ivan Reitman's action fantasy GHOSTBUSTERS and Warner Bros. launched Joe Dante's action fantasy GREMLINS. Both were going to play best to younger males. Both studios wanted to kick-off that weekend because in those days early June was when most schools had just closed for the summer, so younger males were now able to see movies all week long. GHOSTBUSTERS looked the strongest. Reitman had already directed hit comedies like MEATBALLS (1979 - $43M) & STRIPES (1981 - $85M). His new film had big star power – Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd & Sigourney Weaver. GREMLINS' Joe Dante hadn't directed any big hits yet but had gotten lots of attention with his werewolf film THE HOWLING (1981 - $18M). Stars Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates & Hoyt Axton weren't as well-known as GHOSTBUSTERS' star trio. GREMLINS did have some significant star power behind the camera in executive producer Steven Spielberg, whose Gremlins opened on 6/8/1984, INDIANA JONES & THE TEMPLE OF DOOM had just opened Memorial Day weekend to Directed by Joe Dante and Executive $42.3M and would do $333M worldwide. Despite industry speculation that one title might Produced by Steven Spielberg move, both studios stayed the course.
