2001 vs. Bethel (W, 34-0): Saint John’s took a 7-0 lead following a one-yard Brad Beyer return of his own blocked punt. With just over four minutes left in the fi rst half and the Johnnies up 14-0, Bethel threatened with a third-and-goal from the SJU one-yard line. Bethel’s Scott Ylkanen looked as if he had crossed the goal line, only for the home crowd to witness cornerback Scott Shafer sprint down the near sideline for a 99-yard fumble return for a Johnnie touchdown. Instead of cutting the Johnnies’ lead to 14-7, the exhilarating play provided a giant momentum shift and increased the Saint John’s lead to 20-0. Shell-shocked and sputtering in the second quarter, a fourth-and-one attempt fumbled by Bethel quarterback Scott Kirchoff was recovered by Bethel’s star running back Mike Johnson for an eight-yard loss and a turnover on downs on its own 31-yard line. The Johnnies sought another opportunity and cruised into the end zone 46 seconds later to take a 27-0 lead into halftime. To end the scoring, All-American and the eventual school-leader in sacks, Jeremy Hood, intercepted an attempted screen pass by the Royals and returned it 71 yards before being caught by Bethel wide receiver Joel Olson at the three-yard line. Three plays later the Johnnies punched in their fi nal touchdown to post a 34-0 victory.
