1. Name of the Department a. Nepali Department since 1948 – 2001 (Honours Classes started since- 1967 till date) b. Post Graduate Department of Nepali (since- 2002 from 5th April 2002 session started)

2. Year of establishment The Nepali Department established with the establishment of Darjeeling Govt. College i.e. in 5th August 1948. But in the beginning only the Elective course were introduced followed by Honours and M.A. respectively. The details is given below : a. Nepali Department established in– 1948 b. Honours course started in – 1967. c. M.A. in Nepali started in – 2002. After the introduction the M.A. course in Nepali the Department was renamed as Post Graduate Department of Nepali.

3. Is the Department part of a School/Faculty of the university? As the Darjeeling Govt. College is a constituent body of North Bengal University the P.G. Department of Nepali also comes under NBU. So the PG Department of Nepali is also the part of NBU.

Names of programmes offered (UG, PG, M.Phil., Ph.D., Integrated Masters; Integrated Ph.D., D.Sc., D.Litt., etc.) (i) In Under Graduate levels Post Graduate Department of Nepali offered Elective Nepali for B.A. Pass course with Additional compulsory subjects to B.Sc., B.Com. B.A. Pass and Honours students. (ii) Nepali Honours course is offered to the 3 (three) years B.A. Nepali Honours students. (iii) Post Graduate Department of Nepali offered M.A. course to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd. And 4th semester in every session since 2002 onwords.

5. Interdisciplinary programmes and departments involved In the Post Graduate Department of Nepali organised a. 10 days Workshop cum Seminar in the Darjeeling Govt. College with the collaboration MIT, Mysore. Then Post Graduate Department of Nepali has involved the Post Graduate Department of English of Darjeeling Govt. College. b. In the Geography Department had organised Interdisciplinary International Conference on and many teaching faculty members had participated in this conference. Similarly Mrs. Sujata Rani Rai, present Head of the Department had actively participated in as faculty member of the conference. She had taken the sole responsibility of fooding for the delegates in the conference. Not only that Mrs. Sujata Rani Rai had presented the paper on ‘The reasons for the human trafficking in Darjeeling Hills: A case study Human Trafficking in South Asia’ in the conference. c. Post Graduate Department of Nepali had organised a Seminar and interactive programme with cultural events on 20th August 2014. Many teaching faculty members of different local colleges were invited. The Azammari a bilingual (Nepali & English) Special Edition was release on the occasions of 200 yrs. Bhanu Bhakta Acharya’s Birth Anniversary in the Darjeeling Govt. College.

Details of programmes discontinued, if any, with reasons Since Post Graduate Department of Nepali was offering NET coaching classes in the department for SC and ST students of Post Graduate Department of Nepali students of 4th semester under UGC grant. After two sessions it was discontinued. It was administrative decisions and the faculty member is unaware of it.

12. List of senior Visiting Fellows, adjunct faculty, emeritus professors (i) Guest Lecturer – Dr. Gokul Sinha. He serve the ‘Guest Lecturer’ post in the Post Graduate Department of Nepali since 2004 to March 2013. He was a retired Assistant Lecturer (Selection Grade) of . In March 2013 again he joined in the post of Senior Linguistic, in the Nepali Department of North Bengal University under the Prof. Naresh Chandra Khati’s project SPTIL’s (Shallow Partial Tool Indian Language).

Emeritur Professors – (ii) Dr. Pratap Chandra Pradhan – Dr. Pratap Chandra Pradhan, born & brought up in Soureni, Mirik, Darjeeling, studied in St. Joseph’s College, Darjeeling. Worked as Lecturer in Tribhuwan Biswa Vidyalaya, Professor in Banaras Hindu University’s Indianb Language Department’s Nepali Section & Sikkim University. At Present he is t he Dean in Sikkim University. He deliver the special lecture on ‘Modern trend in Nepali Literature’ in the Post Graduate Department of Nepali, DGC. (iii) Dr. Diwakar Pradhan– An Ex-student of the Nepali Department of Darjeeling Govt. College is now working as Associate Professor in Banaras Hindu University’s Nepali Section of Indian Languages Department. In the session 2014-2015 & 2015-2016 Temporary Faculty Members shoulder on the 50% of class load. It is due to the retirement of one senior teacher and secondly due to the transfer of Mr. Nawin Poudyal, Assistant Professor from the P.G. Deptt. of Nepali to the Pedong Degree College, in August 2014 and June 2015 respectively. But during the Puja Vacation the permanent teaching staff detained themselves in the department to take the extra classes or remedial classes for the Post Graduate students. The temporary faculty members are engaged in the U.G. Level Pass and Honours Course classes only as per their choices. Only Mrs. Binupa Rai and Mr. Saroj Rai were engaged in P.G. Level also as per the departments’ requirement in 2007-2008, and 2012-2013. Again due to the retirement of Dr. Lalita Rai ‘Ahmed’, HOD & Professor and the transfer of Assistant Professor Mr. Nawin Poudyal of the department, Mr. Saroj Rai has been allotted 6 classes in P.G. level from June 2015 till date. There was a ‘Nepali Typist’ named Mrs. Geeta Rayamajhi who died in 2007. So Nepali Typist’s post in the department is still vacant. It is the need of the hour in the department.

Non-teaching staff Mrs. Chandrakala Tamang retired in August 2015 and till date the support staff Group D post is vacant.

Deptt. of Nepali had organised the orientation cum training programme in colaboration with Central Institute of Indian Language (CIIL) on the topics of “Natural Language Processing” on & from 6th June to 10th June 2012. (Hons.) students of Nepali Department in this ten days orientation cum workshop programme. Dr. L. Rai Ahmed (HOD) had presented a paper and Mrs. Sujata Rani Rai, Associate Professor had compared and conducted the total ten days programmes. Certificates were distributed to all participants. Inspite of this P.G. Deptt. of Nepali had invited the literary figure and Professor of the Sikkim University, Tribhuwan University (Nepal) to deliver the lecture on modern trends in literature. (i) Yes, Before the changes in the U.G. & P.G. syllabus by North Bengal University. We were requested to supply the topics, piece of study matters, materials. So we had several meetings in the P.G. Deptt. Of Nepali, Darjeeling Govt. College. We sent a combined rectified draft of the syllabus after broadly discussing it in the department among the faculties. (ii) In every new assaignment or programmes. We discuss the matter and set the way, methodology. If necessary the students’ feedback, view-point also taken.

42. Does the department obtain feedback from

a. Faculty on curriculum as well as teaching-learning-evaluation? If yes, how does the department utilize the feedback? The college implements the curricula of its affiliating university i.e. North Bengal University to its entire Undergraduate and Post graduate departments. Regular unit based class tests are conducted in many subjects. Students are advised to use resource in all subjects. The Post Graduate Department of Nepali, Darjeeling Government College always hold the departmental meeting on the 1st day of the opening sessions of the college and before every new opening sessions of U.G. and P.G. In this departmental meeting review of past work done, completion of the previous distributed syllabus, the performances of the students, U.G. and P.G.’s results are discussed. The syllabus for the new session will be distributed among the Assistant Professors, Part-time teachers and Head of the Department. Keeping the general academic calendar of the college and North Bengal University in the main the department sets internal test, weekly Unit Test, co-curricular activities for the year and the same in being distributed among the students at the beginning of the academic session. Details of the internal Class Test for the year 2010-2015 (August in two section A & B).

b. students on staff, curriculum and teaching-learning-evaluation and how does the department utilize the feedback? The meeting of the teachers’ will be held if the agenda demands the opinions, point of view of the whole college teaching staff, if necessary the non-teaching & the students’ representatives will be involved. But if the arising matter or topics need the departmental meeting only then it will be held in the department. During the allotted lecturer H.O.D. collect feedback of students’ through verbal questionnaire in the class. Sometimes the faculty members also provide the feedback collected by themselves in the classrooms or the out side. Usually the students represent themselves to express their view-points and opinions to the Head of the Deptt. They share their problems related to their curriculum, class infrastructures etc. Teachers from different departments are inducted as members of U.G. Board of Studies, Some of the teachers of all the P.G. Deptt. are members of P.G. Board of studies. There are no ways to give suggestions or student feedback to the University other than through the members of the Board of studies. As the college has no academic autonomy, it is at present not possible to develop independent curriculum for any course. So the P.G. Deptt. of Nepali, Darjeeling Govt. College also follow the same curriculum of North Bengal University.

The University conducts examinations annually. The result of the college as a whole is discussed in the teachers’ meeting. The results of the class tests are also discussed in the departmental meetings. Feedback from the students is also taken department wise. So the P.G. Deptt. of Nepali holds pre and post departmental meeting for internal exams. In the pre meeting the completion of the syllabus, question pattern, submission date of the set questions for the exams will be discuss and in the post meeting the performance of the students will discuss and the average marks scorer students will be call for counselling. Some teachers distributes the token of appreciation to the high marks scorer personally to encourage them.

On 2nd Dec. 2015 an eminent scholar Dr. Abhijit Banerjee, Associate Professor of Burdawan University & a financial analyst cum profound professional singer Sri Deepayan Chatterjee visited the Deptt. And delivered lectures on ‘Tea, Darjeeling Tea Gardens & the People Around.’ & ‘Rabindranath Tagore & Nature’ respectively. The U.G. (Hons.) & P.G. students interacted actively. On the request of IInd yr. U.G. (Hons.) students ‘Rabindranth Tagore’s Song – Tomar Dak Suneui Jodi keo na asey tabo ekla chalorey’ sang by Mr. D. Chatterjee. Lastly on the IInd yr. Hons. Students the series of lecture sessions ended with – ‘Jana Gana Mana’ National Anthem. The Guest lecturers are very much impressed with the integrity shown by the students. It enrich the students.

The students of P.G. III & IVth semester and IInd and IIIrd yr. Hons. Students observes “Fresher’s Welcome” programme grandly every year. They perform ethnic and national integrity type cultural programme. They manage all sorts of duties, take all the burden of responsibility of raising funds themselves arranges token of love to the fresher’s, packets of snacks. The faculty only share financial support voluntarily. The students’ talents can be seen in such programme. Similarly, at the end of academic sessions I, IInd (Hons. & Ist. IIrd semester students perform ‘Farewell Programme’. On every 5th Sept. of the year the students from Ist. Hons. To P.G. IVth semester observe teachers’ day. On the auspicious birthday of Sri Sabvapalli Radhakrishnan the HOD or any teachers deliver lecture on his life & contributions. The students celebrate it with full vigor & enthusiasm. Besides these ‘beyond syllabus schlolarly activities’ the P.G. Deptt. Of Nepali observe condolence meeting on the demise of literary or National personalities. Of Nepali providing knowledge on language & literature. From last 70’s to till date the department produced manyu scholar, poet, writers, who owned ‘Sahitya Academy Award’ New Delhi, Teachers, Professors, Politicians, Leaders, Advocates, Social Workers, Educationist etc. The P.G. Deptt. Of Nepali contributed three literary works in book form, i.e. i.Sahityananda – 2010 ii.Azammari (Bi-lingual special edition, containing 534 pages two volumes of One set book) - 2014

Being an oldest department in Nepali in India, can be granted the Heritage Status also and can be promoted to be model to the other department and colleges.
