Queen’s Park Today – Daily Report August 20, 2020 Quotation of the day “They demanded — under duress — that we stop supporting Belinda [Karahalios]. We are appalled at this bullying and abuse of power. It is a direct attack on our democracy!” The now-derecognized PC riding association in Cambridge sends out flyers attacking Premier Doug Ford and the PC Party over alleged "intimidation tactics." Today at Queen’s Park Written by Sabrina Nanji On the schedule The house reconvenes on Monday, September 14. The roster for the Select Committee on Emergency Management Oversight — which will scrutinize ongoing extensions of emergency orders via Bill 195 — has been named. The majority-enjoying PC side will feature Bob Bailey, Christine Hogarth, Daryl Kramp, Robin Martin, Sam Oosterhoff, Lindsey Park and Effie Triantafilopoulos. The New Democrat members are Gilles Bisson, Sara Singh and Tom Rakocevic; Liberal MPP John Fraser will take up the Independent spot. The committee was struck as an accountability measure because the PCs empowered themselves to amend or extend the emergency orders for up to the next two years, without requiring a vote or debate in the legislature. Bill 195, the enabling law, also requires the premier or a designate of his choosing to appear at the special committee to justify any changes to the sweeping emergency orders. Premier watch An RFP for the next leg of the Eglinton Crosstown tunnelling project will be issued today. Premier Doug Ford announced the move in Mississauga Tuesday alongside cabinet’s transportation overseers Caroline Mulroney and Kinga Surma. Three construction consortiums have already been shortlisted and are now able to present their detailed costing plans to Infrastructure Ontario.

From: Ontario News <[email protected]> Sent: July 5, 2021 11:36 AM Subject: Ontario Acting to Combat Antisemitism in Schools NEWS RELEASE Ontario Acting to Combat Antisemitism in Schools Province’s Partnership with Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies will Fight Hate and Discrimination July 05, 2021 Ministry of Education TORONTO — The Ontario government is investing in a plan to counter rising antisemitism in Canadian schools and communities. As part of this plan, the government announced new training initiatives and resources for educators and supports for students to combat antisemitism with an investment of $327,000. According to Statistics Canada, the number of police-reported incidents in Canada targeting the Jewish population in 2019 was 296, the largest number of any religious group. Stephen Lecce, Minister of Education, joined by Robin Martin, MPP for Eglinton-Lawrence, and Gila Martow, MPP for Thornhill, made the announcement with the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies. “Antisemitism is a scourge and historic evil that must be eradicated from our schools, from our communities, and from the hearts of all Canadians,” said Minister Lecce. As part of the Safe Return to Class fund, the Ontario government is providing the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies with $327,000 to support two summer learning programs: • The ‘Unpacking Intolerance: Equity and Diversity Training for Educators’ program, which will provide professional development sessions to help educators learn about dismantling systems of oppression and antisemitism in homes, schools and communities. • The ‘Tour for Humanity Virtual Summer Camp,’ which will help students learn about human rights, dealing with injustice, and encourage ideas for creating positive change.

  • This Paper Seeks to Expand the Scope of These Two Seemingly Separate
Provincial-International Relations: Exploring the International Involvement of the Ontario Legislature Natalie Tutunzis, Ontario Legislature Internship Programme This paper seeks to explore the international involvement, or the international relations, of the Ontario Legislature. It will be shown that local parliamentarians, as exemplified by the involvement of the Ontario Legislature, have important roles to play internationally. Not only do provincial-international relations exist at the legislative level, but they occur quite frequently and in a diverse manner of ways. The paper will outline and describe such relations as they occur between the Ontario Legislature and foreign legislatures or other bodies, as exemplified through the Legislature’s involvement in interparliamentary organizations and delegations, as well as through the pursuit of international initiatives advanced by members, Officers, and affiliates of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. In addition to describing the actions that have and are currently taking place, the paper will begin a discussion about the general purposes of such international relations at the provincial parliamentary level, as well as discuss their perceived effectiveness. It will be argued that these relations have distinct purposes, which have, in many cases, achieved positive results. While literature on provincial-international legislative relations does exist, it is still remains quite sparse. However, the limited background that does exists on the matter nonetheless points to how frequently such relations occur, their significance, and even more so, how worthy they are of further exploration. Overall, this paper attempts to expand on the existing literature by providing an up-to-date account of the international involvement of provincial parliaments, using the Ontario Legislature as its case study.

Legislative Assemblée Assembly législative of Ontario de l’Ontario NEWS RELEASE / COMMUNIQUÉ THE HOLODOMOR MEMORIAL DAY ACT PROCEEDS TO SECOND READING All Parties Work Together To Pass Legislation That Commemorates Victims Of The Man-Made Famine of Ukraine NEWS March 5, 2009 Queen’s Park – Private Member’s Bill 147, the Holodomor Memorial Day Act proceeded to second reading at Queen’s Park today. This is the first tri-sponsored Private Member’s Bill by Dave Levac, Liberal MPP for Brant, Cheri DiNovo, NDP MPP for Parkdale-High Park, and Frank Klees, PC MPP for Newmarket-Aurora. If passed, this legislation will provide for the declaration of Holodomor Memorial Day on the fourth Saturday in November in each year in the Province of Ontario. The Holodomor is the name given to the man-made famine that occurred in Ukraine from 1932 to 1933, in which as many as 10 million Ukrainians perished as victims under Joseph Stalin’s regime to consolidate control over Ukraine, with 25,000 dying each day at the peak of the famine in 1933. Ukraine has established the fourth Saturday in November in each year as the annual day to commemorate the victims of the Holodomor. If passed, this Bill will extend the annual commemoration of the victims of the Holodomor to Ontario. QUOTES “Today is an important day for Ukrainian-Canadians and especially, for family and friends who fell victim of the Holodomor,” said MPP Dave Levac. “The remembrance of these horrors from the past requires our attention.” “Finally Ukrainian Canadians will have the respect for all the victims of Stalin's genocide they've been praying for in this Province,” said Cheri DiNovo, MPP Parkdale-High Park.
