Der Wettlauf im All ist in vollem Gange. Beide Kontrahenten schaffen wei- che Landungen auf dem Mond. Der bemannte Flug zum Mond gerät in Reichweite. Den Oscar für den besten Film erhält mit The Sound of Music (USA 1965, Robert Wise) ein Musical alter Schule, aber schon im nächsten Jahr wird mit Bonnie and Clyde (USA 1967, Arthur Penn) das New Hollywood eingeläutet. In China beginnt die Kulturrevolution. England wird Fußballweltmeister. JJ Abrams wird geboren. Udo Jürgens gewinnt den Eurovision Song Contest. Die große Koalition nimmt ihre Arbeit auf. Die Torwand des Aktuellen Sportstudios wird eingeweiht. Die Uni- versität Konstanz wird gegründet. 50 Jahre ist das nun her. Einiges erscheint weit entfernt, anderes irgendwie ver- traut und nah. Am 8. September 1966 nimmt auch das Raumschiff Enterprise seine Mission auf. Sie wird nicht, wie im Intro von Captain Kirk angekündigt, fünf Jah- re dauern. Nach drei Staffeln wurde die Produktion eingestellt. Das war aber noch nicht das Ende. 1979 treffen wir die Crew im Kino wieder. In den 1980er-Jahren kommt die Next Generation hinzu. Im folgenden Jahrzehnt bereichern Star Trek – Deep Space Nine und Star Trek – Voyager das Trekkie-Universum. Anfang des neu- en Jahrtausends folgen vier Staffeln des Prequels Star Trek – Enterprise. 2009 wagt man einen Reboot im Kino und im nächsten Jahr wird die neue Serie Star Trek – Discovery auf die ursprüngliche Zeitlinie zurückkehren. Star Trek ist damit eines der langlebigsten Franchises der Mediengeschichte – die James Bond-Filmreihe ist noch etwas älter – und eine phänomenale Karriere. Sie steht für Kontinuität, aber auch für Wandel. An ihr lässt sich Zeitgeschichte abhorchen. Dass die vielfältige Geschichte von Star Trek nun fünfzig Jahre andauert, war für uns Anlass, dem Phä- nomen ein Heft zu widmen. Die unterschiedlichen Beiträge, die dieses Heft versammelt, zeichnen diese Ge- schichte in ihren Etappen nach – ohne Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit. Bernd Stieg- ler geht der mythischen Orientierung der Original Series aus den Sechziger Jahren anhand des Begriffs der final frontier nach. Viktor Konitzer folgt der gegenläufigen Bewegung, der nostalgischen Rückkehr zur Erde, die insbesondere die Reise des Raumschiffs Voyager kennzeichnet. Auch Beate Ochsner widmet sich diesem Teil des Kosmos, fokussiert allerdings das Raumschiff als Mensch-Maschine-Ensemble und das unter besonderer Berücksichtigung des Holodoktors. Markus Spöhrer wie- derum schlägt eine Brücke zu einem besonderen Kennzeichen von Star Trek: den Fans. Er untersucht die in Futurama aufgerufenen Trekkie-Klischees. Christoph Büttner räsoniert über die utopischen Gesellschaftsentwürfe von Star Trek und Augenblick67.indd 5 28.11.2016 13:29:35 begibt sich dafür auf die Raumstation Deep Space Nine. Alexander Zons schließ- lich fragt nach den ästhetischen und ideologischen Implikationen, die das Spiel von Abweichung und Wiederholung im Reboot von JJ Abrams zeitigt. Wir hoffen, dass dieser bunte Strauß an Texten bei den Lesern ähnliche Reakti- onen auslöst wie bei uns. Star Trek gehört als popkulturelles Phänomen zu unserer Geschichte. Es lohnt sich dieser Beziehung nachzugehen. Wir schreiben das Jahr 2200. Dies sind die Abenteuer des Raumschiffs Enter- prise, das mit seiner 400 Mann starken Besatzung 5 Jahre unterwegs ist, um fremde Galaxien zu erfor- schen, neues Leben und neue Zivilisationen. Viele Lichtjahre von der Erde entfernt dringt die Enter- prise in Galaxien vor, die 1 Star Trek: «The Omega Glory» (SII/E54) nie ein Mensch zuvor ge- sehen hat.»1 In der deut- schen Übersetzung, die Folge für Folge die gleiche bleibt, während die Geschichten vorüberziehen und sich mit ihnen mitunter auch die Ordnungen der Zeit und des Raumes verändern, kommen einige der Anspielungen der Originalfassung abhan- den. Diese lautete – mit Ausnahme der beiden Pilotfilme – in jeder Folge: «Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its 5-year mis- sion: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.»2 Durch die Verwendung des Begriffs Frontier wird hier ein Genre aufgerufen, das mit dem der Science Fiction wenig zu tun zu haben scheint: der Western.     D-3 CLASS LIGHT CRUISER The oldest known ship class to have been operated by the KDF, the D-3 was the second Klingon ship class encountered by humanity (forces of UESPA/Earth Starfleet). Markedly superior to the NX-class and even the later Daedalus class, this design was esti- mated to have entered service around 2120. It went on to be something of a trailblazer, influencing the design of the D4-8 battlecruisers as well as the Romulan S-11 class frigate (an intelligence breach in 2140 is believed to have heavily influenced this). Of all known Klingon ship classes, least is known about the D-3—all information in Federation Databanks being gained through two missions by the starship Enterprise (CA 01) in 2152 and 2154. It is among the earliest ships known to have employed Deflector Shield technology and has a top speed of Warp 6. Its armament is comprised of at least 4 disruptor cannons—the total output of which far eclipsed the phase cannons of the NX-class. Based on the known history of the D-3’s immediate successor, the D-4/Dama class, it‟s esti- mated that the D-3 was withdrawn from service between 2160 and 2172. Actors, Writers, and crew from the variety of Star Trek series were in attendance and were made available at panels and meet and greet, photo ops,and autograph areas. We have the opportunity to see so much that is not a regular part of the day to day existence at the conventions. To have the chance to spend some time in a world that traditional thinking tells us can never actually become our reality. “It isn't all over. Everything has not been invented. Welcome to summer 2018 and the DOUBLE issue of the Ticonderoga newsletter. The year has just been flying along, so take the time every chance you get to stop and smell the Gagh. (Actually, you may not want to do that as it may spell the end of your ability to smell, but you get the point!) Your newsletter crew has been working tirelessly preparing this issue of the newsletter, often times going for days without sleep, just eating and drinking to keep us inches from death to bring you what is now in your hands! (Ahem...as a clarification, we may have slept just a wee bit here and there...and maybe a little bit over yonder too...) Regardless, what a beautiful reminder you now hold regard- ing what is truly important in this life. (Hint..it is you, your life, likes and hobbies!!) As we stated in the first issue, the U.S.S Ticonderoga and her crew are a close knit group of friends and family. I am humbled to be able to get to know you all and share your talents, collections, hobbies and more with the rest of the crew. With social media throwing down the gauntlet and pitting anyone with an opinion against everyone else, the Ticonderoga meetings, events, and publications remind us that we can stand together as one even though we may have vastly different points of view on certain world events.
