NEWSTEAD vs NATTE – STEADERS STUN SWANS

Newstead has established itself as one of the leading contenders in the race for the 2013 Bendigo Bank MCDFNL premiership with a shock 114-point demolition of Natte Bealiba on Saturday.

The Roos burst out of the blocks with a seven-goal to one first quarter and never looked back, streaking ahead to a 22.11 (143) to 4.5 (29) victory over a demoralised Swans outfit.

The Swans had no answers to Newstead’s hard running and precision kicking, with the home side’s ability to spread and link up proving too much for the visitors to stop.

Ben Krol was the main beneficiary of the Steaders’ precision delivery, booting three, while Daniel Christmas slotted three, but overall, was probably beaten by Swans veteran Chris Jardine.

Krol, new recruit Mitchell Gilboy and midfield duo Nathan Webster and David Wall were the best for the victors, who now hold a commanding grip on top spot of the MCDFNL ladder.

While best players were hard to find for the Swans, Daniel Gifford continued his outstanding start to the year, Jardine fought hard in tough conditions and Dean Graco and Dan Trewalla scrapped it out .

HARCOURT vs TALBOT – LIONS SNARE FIRST WIN

Harcourt has snared its first win of the 2013 season with a hard-fought seven-point win over Talbot on Saturday.

Trailing by one goal at three-quarter time, the Lions clawed their way back into the lead to win 10.14 (74) to 9.13 (67), with Matt Giri leading from the front with four goals for the day.

The two sides went goal-for-goal for much of the day, before the Hawks crept ahead in the third term, only for the Lions to reel them back in.

Scott Newton also booted three for the Lions, while Nathan Mitchell, veteran defender Alan Mack and Kasey Williams also featured among the best, along with Giri.

For the Hawks, it was another gallant effort in deafeat, Trent Barras continued his solid start to the season, slotting an - other three goals and featuring among the best, along with Karl Gunther, Matt Smith and Josh Sullivan.

MALDON vs CAMPBELL'S CREEK – BURCHELL BOOSTS DONS

A six-goal haul to Shaun Burchell has boosted Maldon to a 55-point win over Campbells Creek.

Along with Hayden Kelly, who slotted four majors for the Dons, Burchell put the Magpies to the sword on their own turf, with a six-goal to two second quarter proving the catalyst for the victors, recording a 19.12 (126) to 10.11 (71).

Not even five goals to Joel Smith was enough to save the Creekers from defeat, with Burchell, Kelly, Jacob Fitzpatrick and Josh Pascoe getting the job done for the Dons.

Smith, Paul Keirl, James Burzacott and Davin Nicholls were the best for the Magpies in their second loss for the year.

NAVARRE V AVOCA

Avoca travelled to Navarre on Saturday confident that they could match it against one of the leagues better teams, but were very disappointing as Navarre ran rings around the Bulldogs from start to finish.

Losing Murray Bond with a shoulder injury early in the opening term did not help the Bulldogs cause as they had to reshuffle their team to accommodate the loss of the big forward, but Navarre’s attack on the ball and their ability to break the lines with handball and run and carry had the Bulldogs players chasing tail all day.

Daniel Parkin was back to his best and he displayed the form that won him the 2011 Berry Powell Medal as he racked up possession after possession and set up many attacking moves to where the big forwards in Zane Bigmore, Ben Scott and Kris Brennan finished off the good work.

Parkin also was amongst the goals and Ash Driscoll has muscled up over the summer months and was also a promi - nent figure up forward, while the back half were well led by Brent Flood at Centre Half Back who led his troops well as they only let Avoca have three goals for the game.

It was a well drilled Navarre unit who showed that they will be a definite contender for a top four finish, while Avoca will look to go back to the drawing board as they face another tough contest next week against Carisbrook under lights on Saturday.

Navarre won 18.22.130 to 3.4.22.

CARISBROOK V DUNOLLY

A ten goal opening term to the Carisbrook Redbacks set up an easy win over Dunolly on Saturday at Carisbrook Recreation Reserve.

It was one way traffic for Carisbrook as they managed to keep the Eagles to nil goals at half time.

Dunolly were more competitive in the second half but they could not withstand the onslaught of the reigning premiers as Nathan Wright was unstoppable up forward and finished with a bag of eight goals for the game.

Carisbrook showed that they are flexible up forward and as well as Wright being in good form in front of the big sticks, the Redbacks had thirteen different goalkickers for the game.

Matt Bilton continues to impress with his repeated efforts around the ground. while Nick Wright was also outstanding as was co-Coach Luke Treacy, and big man Pat Jenes was in inspiring form, while Dunolly was well served by Michael Campbell, Dylan Gordois and Grant Raven, while Joe Thompson continued with his good early season form. Carisbrook won in very convincing fashion. 25.19.169 to 2.3.15.

LEXTON V TRENTHAM

Lexton welcomed Trentham with a demolition job in the opening term with 15 shots to nil, however inaccuracy saved the Saints as the Tiger forwards kicked eight goals seven.

Despite the early drubbing, the Saints fought back in the second term and actually outscored Lexton, but it was still a forty five point margin in favor of the Tigers at half time.

It was a scrappy game after half time as Trentham managed to stop the free flowing game that Lexton is capable of, but Damon Aspland has been in outstanding form for the Tigers and again led from the front producing many clear - ances through the middle of the ground, while leading forward Matt Brown finished off the good work with six goals.

James Gray and Coach Clayton Scoble led from the front for Trentham and Luke Whitehouse who was prominent up forward with three goals, continued his good form since returning to the Saints this season.

Lexton won 17.19.121 to 5.8.38

ROYAL PARK V MARYBOROUGH ROVERS

A large crowd witnessed the "local derby" at Hedges Oval on Sunday with Royal Park came out victorious at the final siren.

It was a very exciting match which saw the lead change on numerous occasions, but it was Rovers who looked to have control early in the game with Coach Scott Sellers having a blinder of a game, and seemed to be all over the ground. Richard Phillips goaled just before the quarter time siren to give Rovers a one goal lead at the first change in a game that was fiery at times.

Trent Pye entered the game for Royal Park in the second term after being unavailable early and had an immediate im - pact as the Tigers two early goals through Jibb Iglesias and Pye who was creating some run for the home team. But just as they gained some ascendency Rovers answered through a very difficult shot from Butch Kennedy and then Lucas Johnstone goaled for Rovers to regain the lead.

Bushy fought back with a goal to Zac Stewart who was proving difficult to curtail by Rovers Full Back Jack Potter who was outpointed on a number of occasions by the burly Stewart who finished with six goals for the game.

Hamish Blake was also a focal point for the Tigers and when he slotted a goal late in the term it was a six point lead to Royal Park, but Butch Kennedy popped up again to kick another goal from a tight angle to level the scores on the half time siren.

The second half was goal for goal, but Zac Stewart managed to slot a couple in quick succession to set up a 12 point margin just before the siren, while Lucas Johnstone had a chance to goal after the siren, but his shot was wide and it was an eleven point lead to Royal Park at the final change.

Rovers lost Corey Taylor to injury during the game which didn’t help the Magpies cause as they seemed to run out of legs in the final term. Royal Park kicked three final quarter goals with two to Brendan Birch, including one from outside 45 metres just before the final siren, much to the delight of the big crowd on the hill. Royal Park won the Maryborough Derby 15.10.100 to 10.10.70.

NAVARRE PLAY LEXTON IN MATCH OF THE ROUND

Navarre and Lexton meet on Saturday at Navarre in the Bendigo Bank Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball League game of the round this week.

Navarre will be on a high after disposing of Avoca with ease last week and will be keen to see if their form holds up against one of the top teams of the MCDFNL.

Lexton also won quite easily over Trentham last week but the Saints were able to stop the running game of the Tigers which was in play against the Tigers' impressive win over Maldon in Round 2.

Damon Aspland has been the driving force out of the midfield for Lexton and it will be a highlight of the game when he takes on Navarre coach Daniel Parkin who was inspirational last week against Avoca. The rugged Grasshoppers on - baller is back to his best form and he will have to be nullified if the Tigers are to have any chance of getting the points.

Lexton will also have to work out a way through the defensive press that Navarre apply, which is well led by Brent Flood across half back and which has been very affective so far this season.

A great game is assured, but Navarre should be able to get the points on the board at home.

TRENTHAM vs HARCOURT

Harcourt journey down to Trentham on Saturday and after a great come from behind win over Talbot last week will be confident of adding another four points to the premiership table.

Trentham were competitive against Lexton last week and as a result should take some confidence from their ability to curtail one of the top four contenders into this match and provide the Lions with a difficult match.

Clayton Scoble was in good form last week and his leadership on the field is a bonus for the Saints, who are lacking in key players this season, and Luke Whitehouse provides a focal point and has the ability to finish off in front of goal.

Matt Giri improved his goal kicking against the Hawks last round after a very inaccurate start to the season in the pre - vious round and all of the Lions supporters were very glad to see the lively forward back to his best with a four goal performance.

The Lions should be too strong and post their second win of the season.

MARYBOROUGH ROVERS vs NEWSTEAD

Jubilee Oval is the venue for the Maryborough Rovers and Newstead match and with the Steaders on a roll this sea - son, and on recent form, they should be able to win this match quite comfortably.

The Scott Sellers led Maryborough Rovers provided a great contest last Sunday against Royal Park in the local derby, but seemed to run out of legs from the third term. Sellers was everywhere in that game and will need some of his team mates to step up if they are to provide any contest against Newstead.

The Rovers have recruited a number of players from the Mornington Peninsula including Grant Ryan and Dean & Brent Ritchie who were all very serviceable against Bushy, but they have not been confronted by a quality team yet, and this will be a challenge to see how they fare against the Steaders.

Newstead sit on top of the ladder having won every game so far by more than eighty points and with Daniel Christmas leading the goalkicking on 20 goals, he will provide a tough match up for Rovers full back in Jack Potter.

Newstead should remain on top of the ladder with another comfortable victory.

NATTE BEALIBA vs TALBOT

The Talbot Hawks could easily be three and zip at the moment, but have lost a couple of close games that could eas - ily have won, particularly last week against Harcourt in which they were overran in the final quarter.

Natte Bealiba’s season has been a bit up and down and after pushing Lexton in the opening round, they struggled to get the points against Dunolly, and then travelled to Newstead confident of a good showing, only to be handed a foot - ball lesson from the rampaging Steaders.

6 MCDFNL ADVOCATE - ROUND 4 11/05/2013 Visit: www.mcdfl.vcfl.com.au MCDFNL ROUND 4 PREVIEW

This weeks contest against Talbot is an opportunity to get their season back on track. The Swans have the ability to match it with any team when they are on song, especially when their key players such as Stephen Ross, Mark Fitzgerald and Zac Perez are up and firing. Ross is a match winner and if Talbot can shut him down then they will be a chance to cause an upset, but despite Talbot’s obvious improvement this season, it is difficult to see them upsetting the Swans at home.

CARISBROOK vs AVOCA – DOGS FACE TOUGH TEST

Avoca faces its toughest task yet in 2013 when it comes up against undefeated reigning premier Carisbrook on Satur - day.

Boasting a 2-1 record after three rounds, the Dogs have downed Dunolly and Royal Park so far this season, but are yet to come up against a side of the same calibre as the Redbacks.

Their task will be made even tougher this weekend with star forward Murray Bond set to miss the match due to a shoulder injury suffered against Navarre last week, which is likely to sideline the new recruit for just one match.

With Bond, who has booted 11 goals so far this season, unavailable, the Bulldogs will have to turn to coach Adrian Pil - grim as their number one target up forward, while midfielders Lachlan Edwards and Beau Ketchen will also have to give the side a boost, particularly after a 108-point thrashing at the hands of Navarre last week.

Carisbrook will be confident of giving the Bulldogs a similar touch-up however, particularly after a 3-0 start to the sea - son, which includes a round one defeat of Navarre.

Nathan Wright hit his straps for the Redbacks last round, booting eight goals against Dunolly, while midfield duo Matt Bilton and Ryan Hudson-Morgan have been standouts for the Brook so far this season.

DUNOLLY vs CAMPBELL'S CREEK – PIES LOOK TO BOUNCE BACK

Both Campbell's Creek and Dunolly will be prepared to fight tooth and nail for a win as the two sides clash on the Ea - gles’ home turf on Saturday.

After a promising start to the season, the Creekers have been unable to clinch a win in the following two rounds, de - spite a spirited showing against long time tormentors Maldon in round two.

Joel Smith is undoubtedly the key for the Creek, with the high-flying forward booting 15 goals in just two games so far this year, and Eagles coach Tony Bellenger will have his work cut out trying to find a match-up for Smith.

Despite plenty of pre-season promise and some solid efforts against more fancied opponents so far in 2013, the Ea - gles are yet to record a win and are currently languishing in 13th spot on the MCDFNL ladder, sitting just above Tren - tham on pure percentage.

The Eagles’ influx of new faces have had little effect on their results so far, with local names Bellenger, Joe Thompson and Matt Gibbs more effective thus far, and the side will need some of its recruits to lift in what looms as a vital clash for both sides this weekend.

MALDON vs ROYAL PARK – TIGERS RIDING HIGH

Royal Park coach Greg Stewart will look to carry over some momentum from his side’s round two win over arch-rivals Maryborough Rovers as the Tigers take on Maldon this weekend.

It’s been a long time since the Tigers boasted a 2-1 record after three rounds, and despite Stewart’s the party line of “keep a lid on it”, it was plain to see for anyone at Sunday’s Maryborough Derby that the winds of change are finally sweeping through Royal Park after an extended stint in the MCDFNL wilderness.

The Tigers have some genuine talent in their team in the form of midfield duo Trent Pye and Jarrod O’Connor, while Zac Stewart looked more than capable up forward last round, booting six goals.

However despite their resurgence, the Tigers will face a tougher task this weekend against the Dons.

Despite a raft of off-season departures, the Dons still look like a more-than-capable outfit, with Shaun Burchell seem - ingly revitalised, while Hayden Kelly has lifted another notch so far this season, along with key forward, Leigh Harri - son, and new coach Brett Williams will be confident of getting the job done against the Tigers this weekend.

Each weekend at Auskick centres across country Victoria, thousands of young boys and girls get their first taste of the great game of Australian Rules Football.

Last year more than 17,000 country kids attended Auskick clinics in regional and rural Victoria as part of weekly sessions aimed at teaching them fundamental motor skills for future physical activity and sports par - ticipation.

The program also gives kids an opportunity to learn important social skills, including cooperation and re - spect for others, while introducing them to what hopefully will be a lifetime involvement in football.

While we take time this Sunday to celebrate Mother’s Day and say thank you to our Mums for all they do, we also look forward to another huge day of fun in North East Victoria.

This Sunday marks the third annual Swan Hill NAB Auskick Super Clinic, an event which will see more than 400 kids from the surrounding area attend.

Billed as “the place to be on Mother’s Day”, the annual super clinic will attract participants from five Work - Safe AFL Victoria Country leagues.

Kids from the Mallee, North Central, Central Murray, Golden Rivers and Sunraysia leagues will all converge on the Alan Garden Reserve for a day of Auskick action.

With the aim of promoting positive rural relationships, social development and a pathway to senior football, entry on the day is FREE to Auskick aged children (5 – 12 years) and their families, ensuring that cost is no barrier to participation.

Thousands of other youngsters in towns across Victoria will have to the chance to meet their AFL heroes as part of the AFL Player Appearance Program.

Last week Carlton players visited schools in Elmore, Donald, St Arnaud, Seymour, Wodonga, Lake En - trance and Bairnsdale, while a host other towns from Mildura to Traralgon will over the course of this sea - son welcome players from Richmond, Melbourne and Essendon.

Other lucky country kids will receive the privilege of playing at Etihad Stadium or the mighty MCG during half time of an AFL blockbuster.

With only so many games each weekend, not all Auskickers will grace Melbourne’s premier sporting grounds but already this season a number of country regions have enjoyed the ‘once in a lifetime’ experi - ence, with many more to do so before the year is out.

54 MCDFNL ADVOCATE - ROUND 4 11/05/2013 Visit: www.mcdfl.vcfl.com.au NETBALL REPORT - NETBALL MANAGER KARA MURRAY

The Netball Victoria Central Highlands Wingman Off-Court Champion award was awarded to Ash - lee Lierich on Sunday 5th May. Deb Weir, MCDFNL Netball President was guest at the Netball Victoria's 2013 Presidents luncheon and was lucky enough to be there to watch Ash receive her award.

Deb commented that " We were wined and dined for two hours prior to the Vixens home game. At the prestigious luncheon, four finalists in the Netball Vic “Wingman” campaign were given their prizes for winning their region, a Plaque, a netball and $250. It was with great pleasure that I watched our own Ashlee Lierich receive her award on stage and be interviewed by the MC of the day.

All the guests at the Presidents Luncheon - myself, Ash and her partner Tim - were then given special seating court side at the match between the Vixens and the Pulse. At the end of the year at the Netball Vic Gala Awards the Major Wingman award will be announced. Fingers crossed for Ash!"

The MCDFNL are really proud that one of our own has received this celebrated award which is a Netball and Football Victoria and Victorian Government initiative to alcohol-related violence and encourages young people to take the "Wingman Pledge" and look out for their team mates by showing positive off-court behaviour.

Ashlee received a $250 cheque for herself, as well as $250 voucher for sporting equipment for the MCDFNL's Interleague netball program.

Ashlee is the reigning MCDFNL A Grade Best and Fairest, and was nominated by MCDFNL team officials as being the best example from the MCDFNL's Regional State Netball team of the behav - iours valued by the Wingman campaign.

Deb Weir spoke very highly of Ashlee's nomination during the RSL competition. "Ashlee leads by example on the court with her disciplined approach to the game, positive talk to her team mates and her willingness to give 100% under any circumstances, win, lose or draw"

"She promotes a healthy lifestyle through her commitment to fitness, being responsible with alco - hol (never drinking and driving, and drinking in moderation when she rarely does) and her overall attitude towards participation in sport. "

"On top of everything else though, she's an extremely popular and highly respected person throughout her netball club, the MCDFNL and her local community".

Ash played every game in the Central Highlands Regional State League netball tournament for the MCDFNL, finishing second to Lexton's Krystal Fisher in the MCDFNL's Best & Fairest count for the competition.

From here on Ash is in the running with the other RSL Wingman winners and also the Wingman winners from the 10 VNL State sides for the overall State Wingman Champion. Ash will be part of a media interview/conference with Eloise Southby, the Department of Justice and the local minis - ter of sport this month. If Ash wins she will receive $1000 cash for her and $1000 for the MCDFNL Interleague Netball Program.

Congratulations again Ash and Good luck for the rest of the year!!
