Role of other Trustees 32 8. Additional Activities by the Trustees of Sugal Group 39 9. Details of donations from the Trust to institutions 41 FOREWORD It may be recalled that a small compendium titled “Enduring Passion” (For Service to society) was brought out on the 1st of January 2014 briely outlining the activities of Sugal Group. The activities included those of the Singhvi Charitable Trust, Singhvi Scan & Diagnostic Centre, Bhagwan Mahaveer Foundation, Empathy Foundation, Mumbai, Vidhya Jyothi Trust, Ganadipathy Tulsi's Jain Engineering College, Vellore and the Mahaveer Institute of Technology & Science at Jadan, Rajasthan. Before bringing out an updated version of this publication, we thought we should share the philosophy underlying our desire to take up these activities long before CSR came into vogue as a concept. A few years back, we started wondering why institutions and individuals undertake to serve the public without any expectation of rewards, material or otherwise. Generally, they work under dificult conditions in places where even basic facilities such as water, electricity and facilities of sanitation are not available. Their only object is to provide help to the weaker sections of the community, particularly the SCs, STs, women, the aged and children. On most occasions they do not receive any recognition for their series, but are satisied with a pleasant smile and on occasions a blessing. We started thinking of reasons for these entities undertaking such thankless tasks. After considerable introspection, we came to the conclusion that they do so out of their innate spirit of empathy and compassion, inherent in all. Some of them have been exposed to very dificult conditions in their childhood, have seen their parents, friends and relatives suffer for want of basic facilities and in quite a few cases suffer a lonely death uncared for and even unattended. Therefore, they felt that others in the society, to whom they relate, should not undergo such emotional and physical torture and hence they entered into areas of community service. These efforts are extremely laudable but much requires to be done. In fact, some of us do make it a point to renew the lingering fond memories of occasions or individuals who passed by us in the early parts of our life. Their memories linger with us forever but pass us by on occasions leetingly. Naming a new born after a family elder may provide emotional satisfaction to the members of the family. However constructing a school, a hospital or a hospice, would gladden the hearts of a large number of people and bring them much needed physical health, comfort and solace. It may even help people, in some cases spend a major portion of their life in decent circumstances. Over the years, the Sugal Group started building, brick by brick, certain Trusts in a systematic manner to serve the community. These have been broadly described in the (v) previous publication “Enduring Passion”. Our group, recently culminating in the establishment of Sugal Group is running three schools at Triplicane, Chennai through the Vidhya Jyothi Trust which provide quality education at modest fees. The group maintains a pathological lab where investigations include CT scan, Ultrasound scan and Digital X-ray which are provided to the public at reasonable rates. More about them in the succeeding pages. In addition our endeavours encompass: 1. The Provision of scholarships to the needy students; 2. The Provision of pension to widows and destitute and deserted women; 3. The Provision of assistance to the people undergoing heart surgery in recognized hospitals in the State 4. The Establishment of an Engineering College in Pali District namely Mahaveer Institute of Technology & Science (MITS) near the birth place of the ancestors of the family in Rajasthan. Scholarships are given to deserving students and no capitation fee is collected. 5. The group also manages an Engineering College at Vellore namely Ganadipathy Tulsi's Jain Engineering College (GTEC) which has the rare distinction of not collecting any capitation fee from aspiring students. 6. Further, the Empathy Foundation at Mumbai, assisting in the development of infrastructure & in spheres of education and health in Maharashtra State is managed by the Group. The Foundation has completed 90 schools measuring about 2.05 lacs sq.ft. and 18 schools are under construction in 14 districts. It has also adopted few villages, runs eye camps and has incurred an expenditure of over Rs. 50 Crores on these projects. 7. The Group has also adopted ive villages in Rajasthan under a State Government Scheme covering Jadan, Bhagawas, Siyat, Sojat Road and Dhunla in Pali District. 8. The Group has contributed 10 Acres in Village Gudappakkam near Poonamallee, Chennai, Tamil Nadu to Rajasthani Educational Foundation Tamil Nadu for starting the Mahaveer International School. 9. Plans are well on way to establish a palliative care centre at Chennai at a cost of Rs. 17.5 crores to provide solace to the terminally ill patients. (vi) A heartwarming view of these activities has an emotional, physical and inancial support by the entire family and friends. The younger generation namely children and grandchildren are following the footsteps of their seniors. Hopefully, they would continue these spheres of activities. An interesting aspect of these efforts is the positive and dynamic support being provided by the ladies of the clan. You will ind that the Annex provides details of institutions such as their address, location and telephone numbers. This is being done because when, on an earlier occasion, a small volume entitled “Born to serve” was brought out by us; a number of our friends sought such details to enable them to make their own contribution to these institutions. We hope that our modest efforts would enable a large number of well wishers to make worthwhile contribution to these institutions. To the extent additional details are available with us, we will gladly provide them to those who seek such information. We close with the fond hopes that the community at large, particularly the afluent section thereof would rise to the occasion. We are sure that they would also be the recipients of the emotional satisfaction and sense of peace which we have received because of our modest efforts in this respect. It may be mentioned in passing that even voluntary physical help would be welcomed by some institutions since they do contribute emotional support to the patients. Before closing, we would like to add that in order to provide greater focus to our efforts in this regard, Sri Nanda Kishore, a retired civil servant has come forward to help the group as full time head of its CSR efforts. To conclude: The Passion for community service continues, not an iota less. May it long endure! (vii) 1. BHAGWAN MAHAVEER FOUNDATION Website: www.bmfawards.org In each corner of our country, there exist seless souls whose sole aim is to make the lives of the marginalized better. They desire neither riches nor fame. The reward they seek is a thank you or a boost in condence from those they are working for. A smile alone can tell them that their good work has borne fruit. It requires strong will, self‐restraint and endurance power. Practicing Nonviolence is bravery at its peak. Women for Gandhi were embodiment of virtues like knowledge, humility, tolerance, sacrifice and faith. Mahatma Gandhi says “Woman is the incarnation of ahimsa. Ahimsa means infinite love, which again means infinite capacity for suffering”. And “Woman is more fitted than man to make explorations and take bolder action in ahimsa (nonviolence)”. “Woman is the embodiment of sacrifice and suffering and her advent to public life should, therefore, result in purifying it, in restraining unbridled ambition and accumulation of property”. “I first learned the concepts of non‐violence in my marriage.” In Gandhi’s opinion (as is tenet of the ancient Vedic wisdom) woman is the companion of man, gifted with equal mental capacities; she has right to participate in the very minutest details in the activities of man and she has an equal right of freedom and liberty with him. • Forgiveness As Spiritual Liberation Michael Bernard Beckwith
CHAPTER 1 forgiveness as spiritual liberation michael bernard beckwith Whatever liberates our spirit without giving us self-control is disastrous. —Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Michael Bernard Beckwith is the founder of the Agape International Spiritual Center and cofounder of the Association for Global New Thought, and of the Season for Nonviolence. As revealed in this interview, he is deeply committed to helping others break free from the patterns of violence and revenge that we have all inherited and to sparking the belief that people can change, as well as “grow, develop, and unfold.” Real forgiveness, he has said, is “giving up the hope that the past could have been any different.” t Barack Obama’s inauguration in 2009, he said, and I’m Aparaphrasing, that in order to move forward, the Israelis are going to have to see things from the Palestinian point of view, and the Palestinians are going to have see things from the Israeli point of view. This is a page out of Gandhi, and one out of Martin Luther King Jr., on real forgiveness and compassion, which means see- ing things from the other person’s perspective. Oftentimes when we forgive,COPYRIGHTED we hold on to our perception, MATERIAL and we forget that someone else has a different perception. To me real forgiveness takes place not only when amends are made—when that sense of atonement has happened—but when I can see from the other person’s perspective. When I was a young boy, I became a Boy Scout. One day I was walking home with a friend of mine.

AGN. NO. MOTION BY SUPERVISOR MARK RIDLEY-THOMAS January 29, 2013 A Season For Nonviolence In 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was in the midst of planning a Poor People’s Campaign in Washington, D.C. to address the issue of poverty. The planners of the campaign intended to request that President Lyndon Johnson and Congress take action to pass substantial anti-poverty legislation. Dr. King subsequently interrupted the planning of the campaign to join the nonviolent direct action protest by sanitation workers in Memphis, Tennessee. The Memphis Sanitation Strike was an effort by sanitation workers to obtain a living wage and protest against poor treatment, discrimination, and dangerous working conditions. While in Memphis, Dr. King fell victim to gun violence and was assassinated on April 4, 1968. Mohandas K. Gandhi was an Indian leader who employed nonviolent direct action in pursuit of India’s independence from British rule. Gandhi’s use of nonviolence as tool for social change had a significant influence on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. On January 30, 1948, Gandhi was assassinated, the victim of gun violence. - MORE - MOTION MOLINA __________________________ YAROSLVASKY __________________________ KNABE __________________________ ANTONOVICH __________________________ RIDLEY-THOMAS __________________________ MOTION BY SUPERVISOR MARK RIDLEY-THOMAS January 29, 2013 PAGE 2 The Season for Nonviolence marks the 64 calendar days between the anniversary of the assassination of Mohandas K.
