2 2 NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CEO

A THANK YOU GIFT DURING OUR 50TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR People typically give gifts to someone celebrating an anniversary. That’s a great tradition, but as WTVP launches a year-long celebration of its 50th anniversary, we’re taking a different approach to gift-giving.

In this issue of the Program Guide you will fi nd a preview of some of the programs and features WTVP will be gifting to the community in the coming months. I’m not talking about PBS programs, although the quality and variety of outstanding PBS programs will continue as you have come to expect. I’m talking about programs and features created, written and produced right here in Central Illinois. For 50 years, that has been our lasting gift to loyal viewers across the 22-county WTVP viewing area.

LESLEY MATUSZAK Watch for new documentaries, an edgy new ag program, a new host for a well- WTVP President and CEO established interview show, collaborations with local organizations, enlightening interstitials, a new take on a WTVP classic and so much more. In a drama tinged with humor and heartbreak, Tom Hollander (Baptiste, The Night Manager) and Saskia Reeves (Luther) play a couple who embark on a long-planned grand tour of Europe, despite the wife’s wrenching proclamation that she wants to leave the marriage. The two-part series is based on a novel by best-selling author David Nicholls. The Daily Telegraph called it a “brilliantly witty and heartfelt drama about a family on the edge.”

50 YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY WTVP’S FIRST EMPLOYEE REMEMBERSS THE PAST AND LOOKS TO THE FUTURERE

From the beginning, WTVP has been an educational institution bringing qqualityuality educational programming to the community. Through a strong partnershipip amongmong viewers, businesses and the community, WTVP has continued to thrive andd ggrowrow throughout our rich history.

WTVP began broadcasting in June 1971, but before that, as the station developedveloped its schedule, WMBD carried Sesame Street, giving children and the communityy a prevpreviewiew of what was coming on their new public broadcast station. When WTVP ddidid ggoo on ththee air, the schedule was limited to just a few hours of Sesame Street and Misterer RoRogers’gers’ Neighborhood each day.

As the station’s fi rst employee, I was charged with expanding the daily schedule, hedule, increasing the number of broadcast days and raising funds to further the mission.mission. Within the fi rst year, WTVP began airing national content from the new Publicublic Broadcasting Service (PBS) and we started broadcasting in color. A few part-timert-time employees joined the staff, and with the help of a group of dedicated volunteers, unteers, WTVP increased public awareness and improved the success of our fundraisingaising efforts. Additional broadcast hours soon followed. I was always grateful for the effortsforts ooff oourur volunteers.

Backed by this community support and enthusiasm, WTVP added more locallyocally produced programs and documentaries. One of the fi rst was called Monday Night. Today the local productions continue with At Issue, Consider This and Business Forward, regular documentaries on local people and history issues, and the ever-popular Illinois Adventure. Many shows have garnered attention and awards outside our market.

Now, in our 50th year on the air, with fi ve channels broadcasting 24-hours daily, the early foundation of public media here in Central Illinois is still vital to our mission. WTVP is still committed to local content, community support and leadership, dedicated volunteers and staff, and a desire to deliver quality educational programming that entertains, enlightens and enriches lives in Central Illinois.

WTVP’s future is bright for the next 50 years! I am grateful and thankful for my involvement in this enterprise.

NOTE FROM THE STATION MANAGER

50 YEARS OF CHANGING TECHNOLOGY AND UNWAVERING MEMBER SUPPORT When I fi rst started at WTVP, the station signed on in the morning to air children’s programs from PBS and then signed off until the afternoon. Recorded programs and breaks were played back on one of four large quad tape machines. It took almost 5,000 feet of tape, on a reel, to record 60 minutes. There was also a fi lm chain to air slides and for transferring movies to tape. During WTVP’s 50th anniversary celebration there will be much reminiscing in this Program Guide, on air and online. Stories like the one above will be shared throughout the year, demonstrating changes in technology and how far the station has evolved. Today, tape machines have disappeared as programs and break material are saved as digital fi les on station servers. Instead of a single channel available for only a few WILLIAM BAKER hours during the day, WTVP supports fi ve distinct channels with programming 24/7. If WTVP Station Manager a member misses a favorite program, WTVP Passport offers anytime access to a large and Executive Producer library of series, specials and WTVP local productions. Teachers and school children across Central Illinois benefi t from our vast library of educational tools on PBS LearningMedia. But the one constant, from those early days at WTVP to now, is the dedicated support from our members — people who treasure the national and local programs on WTVP and realize its value to our communities. Thank you for support now, in the past andand inin the future.future. William

AMERICAA REFRAMED: THE FALCONER TUESDAY,TU JUNE 1, 7 PM TheTh Falconer captures beauty and hope as we follow Master Falconer Rodney StottsSt on his mission to build a bird sanctuary and provide access to nature forfo his stressed community. This is a story of second chances: for injured birds of prey, for an abandoned plot of land, for a group of teenagers who have dropped out of high school and for Rodney himself.

STORIES FROM THE STAGE: GROWING UP BLACK MONDAY, JUNE 7, 8:30 PM What does it mean to grow up Black in America, a country too often divided by race? Bullied by a group of kids, Ben fi nds out he is not alone and Angie learns about how far we have come, and how far we have to go in a chance encounter she will never forget.

AMERICA REFRAMED: MELTDOWN IN DIXIE TUESDAY, JUNE 8, 7 PM In the wake of the 2015 Charleston Massacre, a battle erupts in Orangeburg, South Carolina, between the Sons of Confederate Veterans and an ice cream shop owner forced to fl y the Confederate fl ag in his parking lot. Meltdown in Dixie explores the broader role of Confederate symbolism in the 21st century and the lingering racial oppression these symbols help maintain.

AMERICAA REFRAMED: JACK & YAYA TUESDAY, JUNE 22, 7 PM From a young age, Yaya and Jack saw each other as they truly were, a girl and a boy, even though the rest of the world didn’t see them that way.
