Costantino Nivola’s Pioneering Sandcast Reliefs, Concrete Sculptures and Rarely Seen Architectural Maquettes on view at Magazzino Italian Art this May Organized in collaboration with the Nivola Foundation and the Embassy of Italy in Washington D.C., Nivola: Sandscapes Provides a Rare Opportunity to Explore the Innovative Techniques of the Modernist Sculptor 2700 Route 9 Cold Spring, NY 10516, USA Cold Spring, New York – February 9, 2021 – This spring, Magazzino Italian Art will Tel +1 845 666 7202 open a new special exhibition dedicated to the work of artist Costantino Nivola, Sardinian [email protected] born and longtime resident of Springs, NY. Nivola: Sandscapes explores the artist’s pioneering process of sandcast sculpting. Featuring a selection of approximately 50 Follow Magazzino on social media: works from the early 1950s to the 1970s, including sandcast reliefs, carved concrete @magazzino sculptures, and rarely seen maquettes of his most important architectural commissions, #MagazzinoItalianArt this focused presentation will examine the artistic process, range of influences, and notable impact that Nivola had on modern urban architecture and design. THE DRAWING ROOM 66 Newtown Lane, East Hampton, NY 11937 T 631 324 5016 COSTANTINO NIVOLA SELECTED CHRONOLOGY 1911-1939 Born in Orani, Sardinia, Italy. Son of a mason, Nivola follows father's trade from a young age. At 15, apprenticed to painter Mario Delitala, spends five years as his assistant in Sassari, Sardinia. Awarded scholarship at 20 to study at ISIA (Istituto Superiore per le Industrie Artistiche) in Monza, Italy. Among his teachers are Marino Marini, Pio Semeghini, architects Edoardo Persico and Giuseppe Pagano, and designer Marcello Nizzoli. Awarded Maestro d'Arte diploma in 1935. While at ISIA, meets fellow student Ruth Guggenheim, whom he marries in 1938. Executes murals for Milan Triennale (1936) and for Italian Pavilion at the International Exposition in Paris (1937). Becomes Art Director for Olivetti Corporation in Milan (1937). Spends nine months in Paris, where he meets Giorgio de Chirico. Moves to the United States in 1939. 1940s Settles in Greenwich Village, New York City. Forms friendships with Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Esteban Vicente, Hedda Sterne, Fernand Leger, Alexander Calder, and re-establishes lasting friendship with Saul Steinberg, whom he met in student days in Milan. Works for six years as Art Director for Interiors and Industrial Design (later Progressive Architecture) as well as for the magazine, You. Exhibits paintings and sculptures with Steinberg at Wakefield Gallery, New York City (1944). Around 1945 José Luis Sert introduces Nivola to Le Corbusier, and they become close friends, sharing Nivola's studio for the duration of the architect's stay in the United States. In 1944, a son, Pietro, is born, and three years later, a daughter, Claire. -

MAMELI Le Corbusier and Costantino Nivola Album Nivola I and Album Nivola II: the most informed scholars of contemporary architecture were familiar with Costantino Nivola Maddalena Mameli through the name given by Le Corbusier to Nivola’s two albums, the only ones, together with the Album La Roche, that did not have the running header stamped in alphanumeric characters on the co- ver of the pocket-sized notepads that accompanied him in his con- Le Corbusier stant travel. Nivola’s hospitality led a small and unknown episode that was crucial for Le Corbusier’s sculptural evolution as well as for the artistic growth of the young Sardinian artist. This evolution and Costantino Nivola would lead Le Corbusier to define the Modulor and its architectural projection in the espace indicible in Marseille, Chandigarh and New York 1946-1965 Ronchamp. It would also contribute to Costantino Nivola’s maturity in his architectural collaboration with BBPR for the Olivetti show- room on Fifth Avenue. With Le Corbusier’s lessons in harmony and Nivola’s lessons in sand-casting, Nivola’s Greenwich Village studio and the East Hampton house on New York’s Côte d’Azur, were the physical and intellectual settings for the architect’s most ambitious moment. This was the project for the UN Headquarters and the CIAM proposal for a post-war reconstruction and worldwide urban planning, that could achieve the utopia that the United Nations would make possible. This book tells the story of Le Corbusier’s New York cosmopolitan family in the context of the American natu- ralization of the European architectural diaspora and in the context of the drive to abstraction of New York School.
