Please Note: It is mandatory for all UCC students on the Greece service trip to carry with them at all times the Emergency Contact Numbers Card which includes the cell phone numbers of Ms. Scott, Mr. McCubbin and Mr. Kelly, all the hotels’ addresses and telephone numbers and the European/Greece emergency number. Students are encouraged to purchase an international roaming package from their mobile phone provider to avoid incurring excessive charges on their cell phone bills.

(Historical) Fiction Gates of Fire is a 1998 historical fiction novel by Steven Pressfield that recounts the Battle of Thermopylae through Xeones, a Spartan Perioikoi and the sole Greek survivor of the battle.

Captain Corelli's Mandolin, is a 1994 novel by British writer Louis de Bernières that is set on the Greek island of Cephallonia (Kefalonia) during the Italian and German occupation of World War II.

Zorba the Greek, is a novel written by the Greek author Nikos Kazantzakis, first published in 1946. It is the tale of a young Greek intellectual who ventures to escape his bookish life with the aid of the boisterous and mysterious Alexis Zorba. The novel was adapted into a successful 1964 film of the same name.

Non-Fiction In Sailing the Wine-Dark Sea, Thomas Cahill explores the legacy, good and bad, of the ancient . From the origins of Greek culture in the migrations of armed Indo- European tribes into Attica and the Peloponnesian peninsula, to the formation of the city-states, to the birth of Western literature, poetry, drama, philosophy, art, and architecture, Cahill makes the distant past relevant to the present.
