November 8th, 2016 spawned a new and historic wave of activists deeply troubled by the rhetoric, philosophy and ambitions stamped into the election outcome. This moment, and the catalyst of the Women’s March on January 22nd , have inspired millions of citizens to engage in our American political system. In Northern Virginia established progressive organizations, as well as the dozens of newly organized grassroots groups, provide the scaffolding for inspiration, education, and advocacy by new, or newly-invigorated liberal activists. Many groups have focused on resisting the federal programs being gouged out of existence. Because all of our Virginia House of Delegate seats, as well as the Governor and other executive branch positions are up for election this November, we have pivoted our efforts to make a difference in our own state. With commitment, community and strategy we have the best opportunity in our lives to #FlipVirginiaBlue. Despite our recent trend toward conservatism in state legislative offices, Virginia has a deep history in leading the nation toward progressive reform. Of course we are the home of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. More recently, in Doug Wilder, we elected the nation’s first African American Governor. Our current governor, Terry McAuliffe, is one of the most progressive in the nation. Our Senators, Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, represent a Virginia open to new ideas and inclusive politics. But our state house is mired in dysfunction and the politics of the past. We can change this. In this upcoming election, Virginia has an unprecedented number of progressive challengers to incumbents. We have an influx of energized and inspired citizens ready to take on new roles in the electoral process. The #FlipVirginiaBlue Summit will help change the course of our political history by providing the tools, support and expert advice to new and seasoned advocates across the Commonwealth to target vulnerable districts, organize neighbors and friends, support progressive candidates and Get Out the Vote (GOTV) to. Our vision is simple: We Vote-We Win. The #FlipVirginiaBlue Summit program will include insights and specific action items from seasoned campaigners, candidates and political experts on how to transform this off-year election into the genesis of a new wave of progressive Virginia politicians standing firm for the values of inclusion, justice and compassion.
