When 2006 was all said and done, he saw four of his athletes (Feigt twice, Roby and Mortensen) garner all-conference accolades, upping his career total of all- conference athletes to 80. In addition to all-conference, Kepler has mentored another 19 conference champi- ons.

In 2007 Kepler coached the cross country team to an improved fifth place finish in the MWC Championships and Alyssa Abbott and Kellie Anderson to a top 50 finish in the NCAA Championships. The team accumulated a 3.64 GPA, which ranked 12th in the nation and first in the conference.

In addition to working with Rock in 2005, Bockman saw all five of his UW-La Crosse hurdlers tally national-qualifying marks during the outdoor season. He ended up with four national qualifiers and two All-Americans. Bockman was a three-time conference champion and a 10-time all- conference honoree at the University of Northern Iowa. He was an NCAA Division I qualifier in the 400-meter hurdles and 4x400-meter relay his senior year. Bockman also qualified at the USA Championships in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006.

He graduated from Northern Iowa with a degree in business management in 2003 and received his masters from Wisconsin-La Crosse in sports administration in 2005. Utah is looking to transfer the success of this year’s cross country season to the 2008-09 Women’s Track & Field team. The Utes return 13 seniors, Jumps five juniors, five sophomores, and will be aided by 10 new athletes ranging from freshmen to seniors. This year the team has five credible jumpers that will be competing. Last year, Shapard won the 400-meter hurdles at the Arkansas Twilight with a time of 58.07, which broke her own school record. She went on to win her second consecutive MWC 400-meter hurdle title in May. Shapard placed third at the NCAA West Region championships and was named to the all-West Region Team. At the NCAA Championships, Shapard advanced to the semifinals and finished 15th overall.

Patterson was a place winner at the MWC Championships for the second time in her career as she finished 6th in the 400-meter. She also set a new school record in the 200-meter dash at the 2008 Utah State Invitational.

Dr. Chris Hill, Utah’s director of athletics and special Administrative Staff assistant to the president, has overseen the most successful period in Utah athletics history. The New Jersey native was just 37 years old when he was named Utah’s director of athletics in October of 1987. In 1998, he assumed additional duties as a special assistant to the U. president – which entails membership on the University’s senior administrative cabinet. On a national level, Hill currently serves on the prestigious NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee. It is the latest of several NCAA committee positions for the highly-regarded administrator. He was the NCAA-appointed chairman of the Championships/Competition Cabinet from 1997-98 and a member of the NCAA Management Council – participating on its administrative committee. He served on the executive committee of the National Association of Mary Bowman Pete Oliszczak Collegiate Athletics Directors (NACDA) from 2002-06. Associate A.D. Associate A.D. But Hill’s biggest strides have come on campus, where his legacy is one of capital improvements, student-athlete support services, academics, and winning programs. In 2002, Utah was named one of the top 20 athletics programs in the nation by U.S.News & World Report. Hill’s fund-raising efforts reached an international stage when the $50 million Rice-Eccles Stadium hosted the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the 2002 Salt Lake Olympic Winter Games. (See inset for a complete list of facilities built during his term.) On the playing field, Utah is a conference and national power under Hill’s leadership. Two of the many highlights are the men’s basketball team’s Doug Knuth Zack Lassiter appearance in the 1998 NCAA Championship game and the football team Associate A.D. Associate A.D. cracking the BCS and winning the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 1, 2005. Utah has also captured multiple national championships in gymnastics and skiing since he became director of athletics. Hill positioned himself for the top athletics job by spending two years as the director of development for the Crimson Club. He initially came to Utah for a graduate assistant basketball coaching position under Bill Foster in 1973- 74. He was an assistant to head coach Jerry Pimm from 1979-81. He was a 1998 Inductee into the Jersey Shore Hall of Fame. Hill currently serves on the Regence BlueCross BlueShield Board of Directors. In 2001, the National Consortium for Academics and Sports gave him its Degree Completion and Outreach and Community Service Honor Award. As an undergraduate, Hill won three letters in basketball at Rutgers – Joe Diancin serving as co-captain of the 1971-72 team. His bachelor’s degree from Steve Riley Strength Coach Rutgers is in math education (1972). He also has a master’s in education Assistant Event Manager (Utah, 1974), and a Ph.D. in educational administration (Utah, 1982). Hill taught in the University’s special education department from 1983-85. He coached boys basketball at Granger High (Utah) from 1975-79, winning 4A Coach of the Year his first year. Hill, 57, is married to the former Kathy Cronin, a faculty member in the U.’s department of special education. They have two children, Aly and Christopher, and a granddaughter, Addie Rose Forsyth. Aly played soccer for the University of Oregon and received her master’s of social work degree from Utah in 2002. She is married to former Ute skier Ryan Forsyth, B.S. ’00, JD ’05. Aly teaches children with severe disabilities in the Salt Lake Jennifer Roney Trevor Jameson City School District. Christopher graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Trainer Athletic Trainer organizational communication from Utah in 2004 and is now a second-year law student at the University of Utah.

Strength & Conditioning

Utah cross country and track and field athletes benefit from the 7,500-square-foot, state-of-the-art weight room located in the Dee Glen Smith Center. The workout facility boasts 12 Olympic platforms, each with its own self-contained power rack/multi-purpose lifting station. There are five strength and con- ditioning coaches on staff to ensure that each and every student-athlete is performing at their peak. The program is under the direction of Doug Elisaia while the cross country and track and field teams works directly with Pete Link, assistant director of strength and conditioning. The daily physical care of the Utes is handled by the sports medicine staff. Trevor Jameson and Holly Snair oversee the athletic training for the track and field and corss country teams. Jameson is entering his ninth year on the training staff while Snair is a graduate assistant in her seconod year. She received her bach- elor’s degree from Oregon State in 2006. The entire sports medicine staff is overseen by director Bill Bean and associate director Deb Willardson. They both have more than 25 yyearsears of experienceexperience at the UniversitUniversityy of Utah.

The University of Utah track and field program is committed to helping its student-athletes realize their fullest potential on the conference, regional and national levels.

In the last three years, Kepler’s teams have effectively rewritten Utah’s record book. Utah track and field athletes have recorded 91 new all-time top-10 performances. Among those perfor- mances are 16 new school records.

In 2008 alone, Utah track and field athletes combined to record 139 new personal bests. The program also saw Chelsea Shapard and Josephin Berg go to the NCAA Championships, sent five to the NCAA Regional Championships, and had two crowned conference champions.

Success at Utah goes beyond the personal and institutional levels. In the last three years, Utah has sent 11 different ath- letes to the NCAA Regional meet, and saw five qualify for the NCAA Championships. There have also been five conference champions to go along with 13 all-conference performances.

With championship facilities, and a top-notch coaching staff, it’s easy to see why the University of Utah is a program rising to the top. Josefin Berg qualified for the NCAA Championships in the hammer throw.
