Welcome to the latest edition of Marsh Mash and a relief that Peter has filled the seat of editor giving Keith and myself more time to explore the excel- lent pubs in our branch and beyond. Luckily, as a branch, we seem to be bucking the current trend of pubs closing with several changing management and new ones opening, although nationally pub closures are declining.

During the past year CAMRA membership has continued to increase to almost 191,000, but the number of drinkers who have not tried real ale in- creased by 2%. They don’t know what they are missing, with over 2,000 differ- ent beers to sample. There was a new national chairman appointed at the AGM held in Dundee to which the branch was well represented, and I had the pleasure of collecting the “most improved Branch Magazine” award for Channel Draught on behalf of our adjacent branch Dover, Deal and Sandwich. The CAMRA voucher scheme is changing, the new scheme will give you more opportunity to obtain discounts in many more pubs in addition to those who offer discounts to members. What better reason to join CAMRA, in addition to supporting a worthy cause. I wish all our readers a good summer and, hopefully weather permitting, time to enjoy the excellent pub gardens in our branch area. Bob

From the Editor

You may well have noticed that the last edition wasn’t my best effort on the quality front. This was especially noticeable on some of the adverts. The pro- gram that I had to use was not at all happy with pdf files but, as several advertis- ers had mentions of beer festivals in the forthcoming month, delaying the edition was not an option. A big Thank You to our advertisers for their understanding of the problem and for their continuing support. September will be an ideal opportunity for joining CAMRA - especially if you are single. A year’s membership will cost you £26.50 per year and part of this will include £30 worth of beer/cider/perry vouchers - To quote Charles Dickens “Result Happiness”! Ten more reasons for joining on page 4. A further inducement may be the “Two Free Pints” which may be available if you join at a CAMRA Beer Festival. With the coming of Autumn, it’s time for Green Hop Beers again. Some of the local allotmenteers and gardeners are producing hops for use by local brew- ers. More on page 33.
