As primeiras civilizações foram criadas quando os estados civis ergueram-se há mais de cinco mil anos atrás. A estrutura das altas culturas era reminescente de teocracias e era primariamente governada por sacerdotes ou governadores que afirmavam ser divinos ou deuses reincarnados. A linguagem escrita, as mitologias da antiguidade, a astrologia, as religiões mundiais, a fundação da Qabalah e a ciência foram estabelecidas. Correntes de pensamento desta era podem ser encontradas no ocultismo contemporâneo e nas concepções religiosas de hoje. As linguagens escritas teriam um impacto tremendo na magia; não por menos, já que de outra maneira é próximo do impossível memorizar os rituais e tradições avançadas de maneira correta. Assim sendo, uma forma mais elevada e escolar de magia emergiu, na qual se diferenciava em sua estrutura da magia mais inferior e folclórica, como é ocasionalmente chamada. A magia folclórica é principalmente relacionada com o aumento da colheita, proteção pessoal, cura de doenças, fazer o rebanho se sentir calmo, etc. Intelectualmente, é baseada numa linguagem simbólica que recai na premissa de que cada símbolo está associado com uma força que tem uma potência mágica na forma de um sistema hierárquico. Alguns símbolos são superiores a outros, e são consequentemente mais poderosos. Certos símbolos correspondem a outros símbolos. É, de um modo geral, irrelevante se o mago acredita nisto ou não. Magia é considerada ser efetiva se ele for conduzida de maneira apropriada. O relativismo em respeito aos símbolos, como aquele que pode ser encontrado na Wicca de hoje, é categoricamente incompativel com a mentalidade de tempos remotos, nas formas superiores e inferiores de magia. A magia mais elevada, ou escolar, tem ambições muito maiores do que a magia folclórica. Ocultistas tem em todas as épocas buscado tesouros, riquezas, reinados, sabedoria e até mesmo a possibilidade de se tornar um deus, através da magia mais elevada. Os rituais dos velhos livros escolares das Artes Negras são, diferentes da tradição folclórica, muito avançados e consequentemente contém conjurações de demônios. Subsequente ao renascimento oculto do século 19, a magia escolar foi uma mistura de magia operativa comum e magia divinatória. A magia comum com bonecas de cera, pretendida a causar dano a um inimigo, era combinada com magia divinatória para ganhar contato com o demônio que, esperançosamente, auxiliaria o mago no cumprimento de sua vontade. Com a chegada de ocultistas como S.L. MacGregor Mathers, Aleister Crowley e Dion Fortune, uma nova visão em magia alvoreceu. Os aspectos meditativos e mentais foram focados. Tentativas foram feitas para contatar forças mais elevadas e outros mundos usando meditação, transe, rituais e outras técnicas. O problema principal com esta forma de magia é que mesmo seus praticantes mais proeminentes e oradores estavam incertos se lidavam com fantasias puras ou com seres sobrenaturais. A magia contemporânea como é praticada, por exemplo, na Dragon Rouge, poderia ser referida como uma forma de magia divinatória. Auxiliado por diferentes técnicas, primariamente na forma de visualizações em combinação com rituais, o mago dos dias atuais tenta entrar em outros mundos ('astrais') e contatar seres, espíritos e demônios superiores. A Qabalah foi, além do mais, uma grande fonte de inspiração que constituíria a fundação do sistema mágico e imagem mundial da Golden Dawn (Aurora Dourada). Durante o Renascimento, místicos já tinham usado a Qabalah e transe meditativo para deixar o corpo e entrar no divino, algo que consequentemente pode ser visto como um precursor aos sistemas de magia contemporâneos. O Ocultismo é uma fusão de teologia, astrologia, ciência e alquimia. Apareceu há muito tempo atrás na antiguidade e expressa um desejo de explorar o desconhecido, encontrando a verdade e rompendo limites. Os ocultistas têm percorrido fora das ciências e religiões estabelecidas no esforço para encontrar os segredos divinos. O Ocultismo sempre foi eclético. Inspiração e ideias foram encontradas nos diferentes sistemas mitológicos, e tentativas foram feitas para uni- los e criar uma síntese. Tal exemplo é a Qabalah com suas ideias em relação aos aspectos de Deus e da natureza de Deus. Junto com seu sistema numerológico, têm tido uma grande influência no misticismo cristão e ocultismo ocidental. A Qabalah sempre foi controversa. O famoso (ou infame) Clavicula Salomonis, a Chave de Salomão, foi banido pelo Inquisidor Nikolaus Eymerich durante o século 14. Dificilmente há qualquer dúvida de que o livro foi usado para propósitos ilícitos. Um grupo de conspiradores usou as Chaves de Salomão numa tentativa de assassinato do papa Urban VIII. Apesar de várias tentativas, eles fracassaram e nenhum demônio apareceu. Um dos conspiradores ficou aterrorizado, deixou o grupo e traiu seus antigos parceiros. Hoje, consequentemente, acredita-se que o ocultismo floresce nas sociedades secretas, mais ou menos. As mais famosas na Suécia são sem dúvida a Golden Dawn, a Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O) e a Dragon Rouge. Ela descreve como o homem pode se desenvolver através de diferentes níveis. O tema principal na Qabalah é a tradição bíblica, e é uma forma de teologia que se empenha em atingir conhecimento sobre Deus. Mas, ao mesmo tempo, é uma psicologia que tenta fazer um mapa detalhado da alma do homem. Ela é, adicionalmente, uma cosmologia que descreve o universo e sua construção. Para um leitor moderno, secularizado, a terminologia da Qabalah, que inclui Deus, Satã, demônios e anjos, possa parecer estranha e antiquada. Blackmer Southern Connecticut State University [email protected] [Noah’s wife] was a nameless woman, and so at home among all those who were never found and never missed, who were uncommemorated, whose deaths were not remarked, nor their begettings1. I. The terse language and riddling innuendo of Gen 9:18–29, which narrates how Noah comes to curse Canaan, the son of Ham, has engaged the inter­ pretive energies of readers since the rabbis of the Babylonian Talmud spe­ culated that Ham had castrated his father2. The language of this narrative, bristling with obscure phrases, loud hints of dreadful sexual transgression, and pious cover ups, has often left subsequent interpreters sensing that the story has meanings that the narrator declines to delineate. Indeed, the only thing that remains clear is that Gen 9:18–29 functions as an etiological myth to justify the permanent subordination of the tribes of Canaan. Canaan commits an un­ speakable sexual crime against Noah’s family that results in the subsequent physical displacement and sweeping rejection of the customs of the Canaanite peoples. Indeed, Israel’s secure possession of the Promised Land is predicated on repudiating the cultural institutions of the preceding Canaanites. Whatever the larger and associated issues, however, interpretive positions have gener­ 30 Corinne E. BLACKMER ally revolved around two broad questions. What was the nature of Ham’s of­ fense, such that when he “saw his father’s nakedness” and told his brothers, Shem and Japheth, it merited the terrible curse of permanent servitude Noah pronounced over him3? Second, what was the rationale for the punishment of Canaan and why, if Ham committed the crime, would his son Canaan suffer the penalty instead? Exegetical traditions have identified the deed for which Noah curses Ca­ naan either as voyeurism, castration, or homosexual paternal incest.

Stuhlman, BA, BHL, MS LS, MHL Because of the differences in alphabets, entering Hebrew names and words in English works has always been a challenge. The Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) is the source for many names both in American, Jewish and European society. This work examines given names, starting with theophoric names in the Bible, then continues with other names from the Bible and contemporary sources. The list of theophoric names is comprehensive. The other names are chosen from library catalogs and the personal records of the author. Hebrew names present challenges because of the variety of pronunciations. The same name is transliterated differently for a writer in Yiddish and Hebrew, but Yiddish names are not covered in this document. Family names are included only as they relate to the study of given names. One chapter deals with why Jacob and Joseph start with “J.” Transliteration tables from many sources are included for comparison purposes. Because parents may give any name they desire, there can be no absolute rules for using Hebrew names in English (or Latin character) library catalogs. When the cataloger can not find the Latin letter version of a name that the author prefers, the cataloger uses the rules for systematic Romanization. Through the use of rules and the understanding of the history of orthography, a library research can find the materials needed.

In the case of Naomi, the connection between her personality and her name was established in the biblical narrative itself (Ruth 1:20): ïàø÷ éîòð éì äðàø÷ú ìà ïäéìà øîàúå ãàî éì éãù øîä éë àøî éì (‘She said to them “Call me no longer Naomi [i.e. Pleasant], call me Mara [i.e. Bitter], for the Almighty has dealt bitterly with me” ’).1 The particulars, however, about Naamah were introduced only in post-biblical exegesis. Naamah’s appeal consisted in that she was both physically attractive and musical. The notion of her physical beauty has been discussed by Pear- son, who ingeniously identified her with Norea, an intriguing female fig- ure that appears in Gnostic texts from Nag Hammadi, in Mandaean and Manichaean literature, and in Christian heresiological writings (Irenaeus, Epiphanius and Philaster):2 the proper name ‘Norea’ and alternative forms have all been convincingly traced back to Ωραα (‘beautiful’), a Greek trans- lation of ‘Naamah’.3 Once ‘the sons of God’ and ‘the daughters of men’ of 1 Biblical passages in English are quoted from B.
