Hedon Town Councillor suspended for one month

Posted by rayduff on April 8, 2009

Hedon Town Councillor John Ledger has been suspended from his position for one calendar month after the East Riding Council’s Standards Committee resolved that he had breached the ‘Code of Conduct’ for Councillors.

The matter related to a Town Council Property Committee Meeting in September last year at which Councillor Ledger failed to declare an interest in a planning application to erect posts on a footpath near his property.

The posts in question are ‘P’ shaped and allow walkers to proceed but deters bikes and horses. However, the footpath and posts in question were in close proximity to Councillor Ledger’s property.

The case may seem quite minor and perhaps can be put down to “not following procedure” correctly and should therefore not reflect badly on the Councillor’s otherwise hard work on behalf of his community.

However, it does serve to remind us that we quite rightly expect high standards from our elected officials and it’s good to know that matters such as these are taken seriously and actively scrutinised by other council structures.

Consultation on Permit for Waste Incinerator at Saltend near Hedon

Posted by rayduff on April 7, 2009

The BBC has reported that a month long consultation begins today (7th April, 2009) on plans to issue an operating permit for a wasteburning incinerator at Saltend.

The Waste Recycling Group Ltd already has planning permission to build an incinerator but has now re submitted an application for a permit to operate the facility.

In its press release the Environment Agency states that the permit will ensure that the plant operates without causing significant harm to the environment and human health.

The consultation period will last until Thursday, 7 May 2009, allowing people to give their views on the draft permit and explanatory decision document.

A ‘dropin’ session has been called for THURSDAY 16th APRIL , 2009 at the Haven Arms, Havenside, off Sheriff Highway, Hedon, HU12 8HH from 3pm until 8pm. Residents are welcome to call in at any time between those times to discuss the draft permit with Environment Agency officers.

HOTI Hull & Holderness Opposing the Incinerator is a campaigning group set up in 2005 to oppose the new facility on health, safety and environmental concerns. The group’s supporters of all political shades will no doubt let their voices be heard during the current consultation.

The draft decision, draft permit and original application documents can be viewed at Hedon Library, St Augustine Gate, Hedon, Hull, HU12 8EX during opening hours.

Hull and East Yorkshire Credit Union

Posted by rayduff on April 8, 2009

In times when faith in the traditional banking sector and bankers has been severely dented, and when people are looking carefully at their money and who looks after Supporting your local community! it, then it’s good to know that ethical alternatives exist.

The Hull and East Riding Credit Union is a notforprofit cooperative owned and controlled by its members. Presently it has over 5,600 members who all live or work in the East Riding so no City investors to please! Established in 1999 its mission is to provide easy ways for its members to save and manage their money.

Since it was formed the Credit Union has helped its members by paying out over 11,000 low cost loans to the value of over £9 million. In particular they have a Freedom Loan which is available to new members to apply for this makes available a lowinterest loan of up to £500. This can be a extremely useful to anyone who is wanting to escape the clutches of a loan shark or a highinterest highstreet lender.

A Credit Union encourages good personal moneymanagement and will not bombard you with offers of instant credit. Instead it encourages you to develop the ‘habit’ of saving your own money as little or as much as you want. As a cooperative you can also benefit from an annual dividend on your savings.

However, Credit Unions are much more than an ‘alternative’ to traditional banks they are directed and governed by highly trained volunteers (elected by their members) who employ dedicated staff, all of whom actually care passionately about providing services for their community!

A Credit Union:

l is locally run by and for its members; l shares out its surplus with its members; l aims to keep money within the local economy; and l works for local people and helps to build the capacity of their communities.

See Hull & East Yorkshire Credit Union for more information.
