First of all, let me not only thank you but thank our host and the people of Panama, who have done an extraordinary job organizing this summit. It is a great pleasure to be joined by leaders who I think have done extraordinary work in their own countries. And I've had the opportunity to work with President Rousseff and Peña Nieto on a whole host of regional, international, and bilateral issues and very much appreciate their leadership. And clearly, President Varela is doing an outstanding job here in Panama as well. A lot of important points have already been made. Let me just say this. When I came into office, in 2009, obviously, we were all facing an enormous economic challenge globally. Since that time, both exports from the United States to Latin America and imports from Latin America to the United States have gone up over 50 percent. And it's an indication not only of the recovery that was initiated—in part by important policies that were taken and steps that were taken in each of the countries in coordination through mechanisms like the G–20—but also the continuing integration that's going to be taking place in this hemisphere as part of a global process of integration. And I'll just point out some trends that I think are inevitable. One has already been mentioned: that global commerce, because of technology, because of logistics, it is erasing the boundaries by which we think about businesses not just for large companies, but also for small and medium-sized companies as well. -

I think that was the last deal I worked on at Yahoo.” The plaque commemorates what may have been one of the dumbest business decisions of all time. Yahoo’s board agreed to sell 523 million Alibaba shares, half of its stake, back to Alibaba at $13 apiece. Yang hadn’t been so keen to sell. They did anyway. By then he’d quit the board. Sure enough, Alibaba’s IPO last month rocked global markets. Shares of the Chinese e-commerce giant are now worth around $90. Yahoo still has a 16% stake worth $36 billion, but it left almost as much money on the table–some $35.5 billion–as its entire current market capitalization. -

Mark Zuckerberg I'm glad we got a chance to talk yesterday. I appreciate the open style you have for working through these issues. It makes me want to work with you even more. I was th inking about our conversation some more and wanted to share a few more thoughts. On the thread about lnstagram joining Facebook, I'm really excited about what we can do to grow lnstagram as an independent brand and product while also having you take on a major leadership role within Facebook that spans all of our photos products, including mobile photos, desktop photos, private photo sharing and photo searching and browsing. This would be a role where we'd be working closely together and you'd have a lot of space to shape the way that the vast majority of the workd's photos are shared and accessed. We have ~300m photos added daily with tens of billions already in the system. We have almost 1O0m mobile photos a day as well and it's growing really quickly -- and that's without us releasing and promoting our mobile photos product yet. We also have a lot of our infrastructure built p around storing and serving photos, querying them, etc which we can do some amazing things with . Overall I'm really excited about what you'd be able to do with this and what we could do together. One thought I had on this is that it might be worth you spending some time with.to get a sense for the impact you could have here and the value of using all of the infrastructure that we've built up rather than having to build everything from scratch at a startup. -

“Facebook Is Hurting People At Scale”: Mark Zuckerberg’s Employees Reckon With The Social Network They’ve Built As the US heads toward a crucial and contentious presidential election, the world's largest social network is facing an unprecedented cultural crisis. By Ryan Mac and Craig Silverman Posted on July 23, 2020, at 11:37 a.m. ET On July 1, Max Wang, a Boston-based software engineer who was leaving Facebook after more than seven years, shared a video on the company’s internal discussion board that was meant to serve as a warning. “I think Facebook is hurting people at scale,” he wrote in a note accompanying the video. “If you think so too, maybe give this a watch.” Most employees on their way out of the “Mark Zuckerberg production” typically post photos of their company badges along with farewell notes thanking their colleagues. Wang opted for a clip of himself speaking directly to the camera. What followed was a 24-minute clear-eyed hammering of Facebook’s leadership and decision-making over the previous year. The video was a distillation of months of internal strife, protest, and departures that followed the company’s decision to leave untouched a post from President Donald Trump that seemingly called for violence against people protesting the police killing of George Floyd. And while Wang’s message wasn’t necessarily unique, his assessment of the company’s ongoing failure to protect its users — an evaluation informed by his lengthy tenure at the company — provided one of the most stunningly pointed rebukes of Facebook to date. -

Reviewed by Heidi E. Huntington West Texas A&M University, USA In 2016, Roger McNamee, a longtime tech insider and venture capitalist, began to notice something unusual happening on Facebook. He observed a rise in viral images and other fear- and anger-based content coming from political-oriented Facebook groups. His hunch was that “bad actors were exploiting Facebook’s architecture and business model to inflict harm on innocent people” (p. 5). As a onetime mentor to Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, McNamee felt he had to do something. Shortly before the 2016 U.S. election, McNamee reached out to Zuckerberg (whom he had advised not to sell Facebook back in 2006) and to COO Sheryl Sandberg (whom McNamee had suggested for the job) to alert them to his observations. Zucked: Waking Up to the Facebook Catastrophe tells the story of McNamee’s efforts to convince Facebook to change tactics regarding some key aspects of its platform to be more socially responsible, and his subsequent, unlikely journey into anti-Facebook activism when his concerns went unanswered among Facebook’s executives. A tech advocate, McNamee likens himself to Jimmy Stewart’s character in the classic 1954 film Rear Window, unwittingly drawn into taking an active role in an ongoing crisis. Zucked is part personal narrative, part doomsday prophecy, and part call to action. Its focus is also ultimately broader than a critique of Facebook alone, using McNamee’s experience with Facebook as an entry point to examine the role of big tech companies in society more generally. -

Using voice control A smart home can have many more smart devices than just speakers and TVs. Let’s see what other devices you can control using the voice assistant in your smart speaker. • Smart devices are similar to their non-smart counterparts, but they can connect to your Wi-Fi so you can control them with your voice assistant. • For example, a smart light bulb looks just like a normal LED light bulb, but you can just tell it to switch on or off. • A smart switch lets you switch on and off your favourite appliances. You plug this into a standard power point and then the appliance into the switch. • Each smart switch or smart light bulb is given its own name in the smart home app so it can be controlled by the app, or by your voice assistant. • But remember, all a smart switch can do is switch on or off. -
