[generalNote]: Hanes gweinyddol / Braslun bywgraffyddol | Administrative history | Biographical sketch Nodyn | Note The Wood family of Perth in Scotland was a branch of the ancient Wood family of Largo. In the late 18 and early 19 centuries several members of the Wood family of Perth rose to high rank in the military and moved to the south of England, including Mark Wood (1750-1829). He was a colonel in the British and the East India Company's service, chief engineer of Bengal, and MP for Gatton in Surrey (one of the rotten boroughs), Milbourne Port in Somerset, and Newark in Nottinghamshire. He attempted to become MP for Monmouthshire, buying the Piercefield estate, which became his seat from 1794 to 1800, and buying further properties in Monmouthshire and Glamorgan in the period 1803-1807. He was described as of Llandaf Court, Glamorgan, in 1806, and of Gatton Park, Surrey, in 1807. Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru = The National Library of Wales Tudalen | Page 3 GB 0210 LOCKWOOD Lockwood Estate Records, Mark Wood became the male representative of the Wood family of Largo in 1777 on the death without male issue of his cousin John Wood (1722-1777), governor of the Isle of Man. He was created a baronet, Sir Mark Wood of Gatton Park, in 1808, and was granted his cousin's arms in 1809. Sir Mark Wood's second, but only surviving son, Sir Mark Wood (1794-1837) of Pall Mall, Middlesex, and of Hare Park, Cambridgeshire, 2nd baronet, died without issue, when the baronetcy became extinct. He was succeeded by his two sisters, one of whom, Rachel, married William Joseph Lockwood of Dews Hall Park, Essex. Their eldest son, William Mark Lockwood (d. 1883) took the name and arms of Wood by royal licence in 1838, pursuant to his uncle's will. He bought further properties in Monmouthshire and Glamorgan, 1839-1849, and also inherited the Lambourne estate in Essex from his uncle, Edward Lockwood Percival (d. 1842). William was succeeded by his son Amelius Richard Mark Wood (1847-1928) of Bishops Hall, Lambourne, Essex, who had reassumed the surname Lockwood on his marriage in 1876. He was Conservative MP for Epping 1892-1917, and was created Baron Lambourne in 1917. He died without issue in 1928, when the barony became extinct. His Essex estate was sold in 1929. There are no clues among the estate papers as to the fate of the Welsh estate, but notices of land required by railway companies and public bodies, 1893-1904, testify that the Lockwood family then had interests in the parishes of Cantref, Defynnog, Llanfrynach and Llansbyddyd in Breconshire, in Cardiff, Merthyr Tudful and Roath in Glamorgan, and in Christchurch, Langstone, Nash, Peterstone Wentlloog and Rumney in Monmouthshire. These notices (D 1/266-300) contain the only references to Breconshire holdings in the archive. Lieutenant-Colonel John Cutts Lockwood (1890-1983) was resident at Bishops Hall from 1930, and in 1940 he deposited the records of the Wood and Lockwood families' Welsh estates at NLW. His father was a Colonel John Lockwood, but it is not known whether he was related to Amelius Richard Mark Lockwood other than by surname. John Cutts Lockwood appears to have bought the Bishops Hall and Lambourne parts of the Lockwood estate in 1929, and perhaps the records came with that purchase, going to the purchaser of the most considerable part of the estate. Apparently he had no estate before 1929, as he appears in Kelly's Handbook for the first time in 1930. He was sometime chairman of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and Conservative MP for Hackney Central, 1931-1935, and Romford, 1950-1955. Set on the E side of the road within 2.5 acres of garden. History Cottage built in 1907 in vernacular style. Said to be by Lutyens and his assistant Oswald Milne. The house was commissioned by Lord Rhondda owner of nearby Pencoed Castle for his niece, Charlotte Haig, daughter of Earl Haig. The gardens are said to have been laid out by Gertrude Jekyll, under restoration at the time of survey (September 1995) Exterior Two storey cottage. Reed thatched roof with decorative blocked ridge. Elevations of coursed rubble with some random use of terracotta tile. "E" plan. Picturesque cottage composition, multi-paned casement windows and painted planked timber doors. Two axial ashlar chimneys, one lateral, large red brick rising from ashlar base adjoining front door with pots. Crest on lateral chimney stack adjacent to front door presumably that of the Haig family. The second chimney is constructed of coursed rubble with pots. To the left hand side of the front elevation there is a catslide roof with a small pair of casements and boarded door. Design incorporates gabled and hipped ranges and pent roof dormers. Interior Simple cottage interior, recently modernised. Planked doors to ground floor. Large "inglenook" style fireplace with oak mantle shelf to principal reception room, with simple plaster border to ceiling.

    Newport Ultra A complete loop of our great city, avoiding built-up areas and following off-road trails as much as possible. The trail could easily be split in two using the Newport to Caerleon cycle route. Distance: 47 miles (76 km) Start/Finish: Newport Transporter Bridge Maps: OS Explorer 152 Newport & Pontypool, OS Explorer OL14 Wye Valley & Forest of Dean, and OS Explorer 154 Bristol West & Portishead. On-line interactive map available here. Facilities: The route passes a number of pubs, shops, cafes and other facilities; these have been highlighted in the route directions. Note: Paths may be muddy in winter and overgrown in summer (a pair of secateurs may be useful). Take care around livestock. As far as the Lighthouse Inn at St Brides, the route of the Newport Ultra follows the waymarked Wales Coast Path. 1 From the western end of the transporter bridge (by the visitor centre), cross Usk Way at the traffic lights towards the West of England Tavern. Turn left along the pavement and join a residential road past the Waterloo Hotel. Cross Alexandra Road towards Fanny’s Rest Stop and join a minor road to the left of the cafe running parallel to the main road. As the road curves right, join a shared pavement and cycle path on the left. Take the next road on the left, Docks Way. Cross to the right- hand pavement at traffic lights and follow the road through a busy retail estate. Keep straight ahead at a roundabout (below a railway bridge) and cross more access roads leading to retail units.

The thought of it came to me with that other thought that I was growing—rather, grown—old; that the curtain had definitely been rung down on all the days of my youth. And so I got into the way of looking back, of recalling the far gone times and suns of the 'seventies and early 'eighties when the scene of my life was being set. I made up my mind that I would write about it all—some day. Some day would undoubtedly have been Never; if it had not been for you. I had not spoken of the projected book to you or anyone else; but one fine morning in 1915 you ordered me to write it! You were then, you will remember, editing the London Evening News, and as a reporter on your staff I had nothing to do but to obey. The book was written, appeared in the paper as "The Confessions of a Literary Man," and now reappears as "Far Off Things." So far, good. I enjoyed writing the book enormously; and, I frankly confess, I enjoy reading it. In a word, I am not grumbling. But there is one little point that I do not mean to neglect. My complacent [Pg 4]views as to "Far Off Things" may not be shared by other and, possibly, more competent judges. And what I want to impress on you is this: that if there is to be trouble, "you are going to have your share of it." You ordered the book to be written, you printed it in your paper, you have urged me to reprint it, not once or twice, but again and again.

INTRODUCTION A visit to Caerleon is fascinating and rewarding; yet it is easily arranged for the town lies on the River Usk just three miles from Newport and only a little way from Junction 25 of the M4 Motorway. There are excellent road and rail links from Newport to all parts of the country. A regular and frequent bus service (numbers 2A­E, 2X, 7B, 7and 7D) from Newport Bus Station takes the visitor to Caerleon Post Office, just three or four minutes' stroll from the start of this trail. Details of times and routes can be obtained from 'Traveline' by phoning 01633 422656. Motorists should look for the Hanbury Arms. If they come from Newport, the Hanbury Arms is just over the bridge on the right. From Pontypool, Ponthir or Usk, follow the one­way system until the Hanbury Arms is on your left, take a sharp right turn and drive along past the post office which is the village square. Go past the Priory Hotel and the Bull Inn, facing each other on either side of the main road. Turn left into Broadway and there is ample car parking space. The walk takes a little over an hour. In some parts the pavements are narrow and pedestrians should take care. The trail describes much of post­Roman Caerleon.
