Summary: Combined analyses of gravity and to- pography can yield useful information about the interi- or structures of planetary bodies [1–4]. Based on radio tracking of the Cassini spacecraft, we present an esti- mate of the gravity field of Saturn's large moon Rhea. Combining this with a shape model based on limb pro- file analyses, we attempt to constrain Rhea's internal structure, concluding that the core likely exhibits some excess flattening. Gravity: During its time in the Saturn system, Cas- sini has performed two close fly-bys of Rhea devoted to gravity investigations: one in November 2005, and another in March 2013. The high albedo and thermal inertia of CO 2 ice relative to regolith allows deposits 15-m-thick or greater to be stable over the age of the solar system.

Once they are discovered in the circumstellar habitable zone, questions about their habitability will emerge. Exomoons are likely to be tidally locked to their planet and hence experience days much shorter than their orbital period around the star and have seasons, all of which works in favor of habitability. These satellites can receive more illumination per area than their host planets, as the planet reflects stellar light and emits thermal photons. On the contrary, eclipses can significantly alter local climates on exomoons by reducing stellar illumination. In addition to radiative heating, tidal heating can be very large on exomoons, possibly even large enough for sterilization. We identify combinations of physical and orbital parameters for which radiative and tidal heating are strong enough to trigger a runaway greenhouse. By analogy with the circumstellar habitable zone, these constraints define a circumplanetary “habitable edge”. We apply our model to hypothetical moons around the recently discovered exoplanet Kepler-22b and the giant planet candidate KOI211.01 and describe, for the first time, the orbits of habitable exomoons.

We adopted a conduction only model, ignoring volcanism and ice shell convection as an outlet for internal heat.

    What has Saturn and a flightless bird that is a resident of the South American Pampas have in common? If you do or do not know the answer, continue reading about Rhea, one of Saturn’s Moons. I will provide the answer at the end of this article. In Greek mythology, the Titaness daughter of the earth goddess, Gaia and the sky god Uranus was Rhea, which is the name given to Saturn’s second largest moon, the subject for this month. Rhea was discovered by Giovanni Cassini on December 23rd 1652. At its discovery, Cassini referred to Rhea as one of four Sidera Lodoicea (star of Louis) after King Louis XIV. The other three were also moons discovered by Cassini and were Tethys, Dione and Iepetus, all of which will hopefully be covered in future articles. Rhea was also referred to as Saturn V, denoting the fifth moon in distance from Saturn itself. Although Rhea is the second largest moon of Saturn, its diameter is a mere 949 miles, which is less than a third of Titan, Saturn’s largest moon. It is a small cold airless body and is tidally locked to Saturn, which means, as our own Moon, the same side faces the parent planet at all times. Fig 1 Rhea The surface temperature of this icy body is -174⁰C on the sunlit side and down to a very cold -220⁰C in shaded areas. As can be seen above it has high reflectivity, which would indicate that it probably is composed of water ice. The Cassini probe, which is currently studying Saturn and its moons, has determined that Rhea has a density of 1.233 times that of liquid water, which suggests that it probably comprises three quarters ice and one quarter rock.

Tjoa Dr. Michael \Migo" Muller¨ June 27, 2019 Abstract We present surface illumination maps, tidal heating models and melting depth models for several icy Solar System moons and use these to discuss the potential subsurface habitability of exomoons. Small icy moons like Saturn's Enceladus may maintain oceans under their ice shells, heated by en- dogenic processes. Under the right circumstances, these environments might sustain extraterrestrial life. We investigate the influence of multiple orbital and physical characteristics of moons on the subsurface habitability of these bodies and model how the ice melting depth changes. Assuming a conduction only model, we derive an analytic expression for the melting depth dependent on seven- teen physical and orbital parameters of a hypothetical moon. We find that small to mid-sized icy satellites (Enceladus up to Uranus' Titania) locked in an orbital resonance and in relatively close orbits to their host planet are best suited to sustaining a subsurface habitable environment, and may do so largely irrespective of their host's distance from the parent star: endogenic heating is the primary key to habitable success, either by tidal heating or radiogenic processes. We also find that the circumplanetary habitable edge as formulated by Heller and Barnes (2013) might be better described as a manifold criterion, since the melting depth depends on seventeen (more or less) free parameters. We conclude that habitable exomoons, given the right physical characteristics, may be found at any orbit beyond the planetary habitable zone, rendering the habitable zone for moons (in principle) arbitrarily large.
