[00:00:05] Carly Rosenthal: But you miss that feeling of connection to the song when you have a song that's so perfect and like digitally made. It could be a top charting song, but how much are people really connecting to it? And going back to it after it's kind of had its moment. [00:00:24] Bryan Smith: Brian Smith here and welcome to the dream path podcast, where I try to get inside the heads of talented creatives from all over the world. [00:00:32] My goal is to demystify and humanize the creative process and make it accessible to everyone. Now let's jump in. Well, folks, it's our 100th episode. It took us two years, but we did it. I don't know why the number 100 seems like such a milestone, but perhaps it's because it takes so much work to record and produce a single episode, or maybe it's that I've been working with Jason Moore, my producer and editor cranking these episodes out week after week for two years straight with no breaks and no hiatus. [00:01:06] Whatever the reason it's a big day for me, Jason and the podcast. And we couldn't have reached this milestone without you, the Dream Path listeners. So thank you for listening. Thank you for telling your friends about the show.

  • Better Than Radiohead What Makes Everything Worthwhile
Better than Radiohead What makes everything worthwhile I’m at The Zodiac in Oxford, UK, in 1992. As a music venue it’s currently half-way between the dive it once was and the soulless corporate hub it’ll become in a few years’ time. Most of the audience is here to see a local band called On a Friday, who’ve recently changed their name to Radiohead, and tonight, as part of their set, they’re recording a live video for their first single, ‘Creep’, which will go on to sell all around the world and, over the next few years, help to establish Radiohead as one the world’s most famous bands. But like several others in the audience, I’m not really here to see Radiohead. I’m here to see The Daisies who are supporting them, and The Daisies – we all sense - are about to come onstage…. After seven exhausting, angry years I resigned my teaching post in a school and taught in a prison for a year while making my first forays into youth work, co-writing and directing rock musicals in the town where I’d been teaching, thereby getting to work with my ex-students but no longer having to teach them capital letters and full-stops. At the end of that year, I started a proper job elsewhere as a half-time youth worker and half-time school counsellor. I was keen that the youth centre I found myself running should expand its creative repertoire beyond desultory discos, pool, darts and table tennis, and develop a culture that included music and drama and all sorts of other, more ambitious things.

  • 'I Spy': Mike Leigh in the Age of Britpop (A Critical Memoir)
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Glasgow School of Art: RADAR 'I Spy': Mike Leigh in the Age of Britpop (A Critical Memoir) David Sweeney During the Britpop era of the 1990s, the name of Mike Leigh was invoked regularly both by musicians and the journalists who wrote about them. To compare a band or a record to Mike Leigh was to use a form of cultural shorthand that established a shared aesthetic between musician and filmmaker. Often this aesthetic similarity went undiscussed beyond a vague acknowledgement that both parties were interested in 'real life' rather than the escapist fantasies usually associated with popular entertainment. This focus on 'real life' involved exposing the ugly truth of British existence concealed behind drawing room curtains and beneath prim good manners, its 'secrets and lies' as Leigh would later title one of his films. I know this because I was there. Here's how I remember it all: Jarvis Cocker and Abigail's Party To achieve this exposure, both Leigh and the Britpop bands he influenced used a form of 'real world' observation that some critics found intrusive to the extent of voyeurism, particularly when their gaze was directed, as it so often was, at the working class. Jarvis Cocker, lead singer and lyricist of the band Pulp -exemplars, along with Suede and Blur, of Leigh-esque Britpop - described the band's biggest hit, and one of the definitive Britpop songs, 'Common People', as dealing with "a certain voyeurism on the part of the middle classes, a certain romanticism of working class culture and a desire to slum it a bit".
