Landscape Wind Energy Capacity Study
Landscape Character Type 13: Rolling Farmland and Estates Introduction This character type occurs in four separate areas within Argyll and Bute. This assessment considers the areas on the mainland in the Helensburgh, Roseneath Peninsula and Toward Point areas only. A separate assessment has been undertaken for the ‘Bute Rolling Farmland and Estates’ (13a) because of its different context and the requirement of the study brief for turbines under 50m height only to be considered for islands within Argyll and Bute. This sensitivity assessment considers both larger and smaller development typologies. Operational and consented wind farm development There is no operational or consented wind farm development located within this character type. The operational Cruach Mhor wind farm is theoretically visible from the western tip of Toward Point at around 20km distance. The operational wind farm of Ardrossan, located in North Ayrshire, is visible from parts of the Toward Point but seen at distances over 20km. The consented Kelburn wind farm and the operational wind farm of Dalry, both located in North Ayrshire, may also be visible from this area. Summary of sensitivity The Rolling Farmland and Estates character type comprises three small low-lying areas on the tips of the Rosneath Peninsula, Toward Point and in the Helensburgh/Cardross area. They all lie in prominent locations on the edge of the Firth of Clyde. These landscapes are principally characterised by the presence of designed landscapes with wooded policies, strongly enclosed pastures and a number of landmark historic and archaeological features. They are backed by the more extensive hill slopes of the ‘Open Ridgeland’ (5) and ‘Steep Ridgeland and Mountains’ (1) landscape character types and provide a strong and scenic contrast with these simpler upland landscapes and the narrow sea lochs and basin of the Firth of Clyde. -

Spring migration of soaring birds over the Bosphorus, Turkey, in 2006 ÖzkAN ÜNER, kEREM ALi BoyLA, ERGÜN BAcAk, ERTuğRuL BiREL, İLhAN ÇELikoBA, CEM DALYAN, EVRIM TABUR & ÜMIT YARDIM The Bosphorus is one of the most important migration bottlenecks in the Middle East. However, most counts have been done during autumn and complete spring counts are very few. In spring 2006, a complete count of migrating soaring birds over the Bosphorus was carried out. We report a total of 100 051 birds, which consisted of 51 958 White Storks Ciconia ciconia, 16 185 Common Buzzards Buteo buteo, 15 232 Lesser Spotted Eagles Aquila pomarina and 9085 Honey Buzzards Pernis apivorus. The study demonstrates the importance of the Bosphorus for the spring migration of soaring birds. INTRODUCTION Turkey has major Western Palearctic migration crossroads, with corridors and bottlenecks for soaring birds in the northwestern (Bosphorus in Istanbul, Figure 1), northeastern (Borçka, Artvin province) and southern (Belen, Hatay province) parts of the country (Grimmett & Jones 1989). The Bosphorus is a well-known migration bottleneck for soaring birds due to its location at the junction between Europe and Asia. The whole population of eastern White Storks Ciconia ciconia, over 340 000 birds, flies over the Bosphorus. Zalles & Bildstein (2000) reported between 29 000 and 75 000 migrant raptors in autumn over the Bosphorus whereas a very recent multi-station but short survey has shown that more than 150 000 raptors use the area in autumn (Milvus Group 2008). Most of the world population of Lesser Spotted Eagles Aquila pomarina and Levant Sparrowhawks Accipiter brevipes, at least in autumn, crosses into Asia via the Bosphorus (Kirwan et al 2008) using the east Mediterranean route (Shirihai et al 2000). -

The structure of the vertebrate predator community in north-eastern Belarus has been examined before and after naturalization of the American mink and raccoon dog. Species composition of the community, population density and biomass, portion of each species in the pooled community density and biomass, species body mass and size structure of the community were investigated. The community consisted of 36 native predator species, and 11 other predator species were sporadically registered in the area in both periods before the American mink and raccoon dog expansion and after the introduced species have reached a high population density. Separating predator species into four size groups, we found that in terms of total density the largest portion of the community belonged to small predators, while large predators formed the smallest portion. In terms of total biomass, the larger medium-sized predator group predominated over other size groups. Despite decline in the populations of ten native predator species, the total community density and biomass as well as portions of different size groups appeared to be very similar before and after naturalization of the introduced predator species. -

Introduction The Scottish Nature Omnibus (SNO) is a survey of the adult population in Scotland which now runs on a biennial basis. It was first commissioned by SNH in 2009 to measure the extent to which the general public is engaged with SNH and its work. Seventeen separate waves of research have been undertaken since 2009, each one based on interviews with a representative sample of around 1,000 adults living in Scotland; interviews with a booster sample of around 100 adults from ethnic minority groups are also undertaken in each survey wave to enable us to report separately on this audience. The SNO includes a number of questions about the public’s awareness of and visits to National Nature Reserves (see Appendix). This paper summarises the most recent findings from these questions (August 2019), presenting them alongside the findings from previous waves of research. Please note that between 2009 and 2015 the SNO was undertaken using a face to face interview methodology. In 2017, the survey switched to an on-line interview methodology, with respondents sourced from members of the public who had agreed to be part of a survey panel. While the respondent profile and most question wording remained the same, it should be borne in mind when comparing the 2017 and 2019 findings with data from previous years that there may be differences in behaviour between people responding to a face to face survey and those taking part in an online survey that can impact on results. -
