Club’s equestrian riders making waves in showjumping and dressage

2019 marked the return of Penang Turf Club Equestrian Centre to the competition arena. Young riders Hannah Bethany on Ms Pearly and Ethan Lim on Arana (owned by Adreinne Lim) were successful in their dressage competitions at the Mitavite Challenge in Ipoh. In the team competition which featured teams competing in both dressage and showjumping, Joshua Tan and Ethan Lim competed with Ethan’s team emerging 6th overall, making it a very good debut. This was followed by another successful foray at the National Horse Show in Ipoh where Ethan Lim secured first and second places in dressage and gained valuable experience in jumping with Ms Pearly. Our instructor Mohd. Joshua bin Iskandar Xavier was successful in emerging as the Preliminary Champion (Upper level) on Bertie. The Penang Turf Club Carriage photoshoots proved to be very popular for wedding couples for brides who enjoyed being the princess bride for a day immortalised in their photos. Our horses also featured at petting zoos for people to familiarise themselves with horses and were a very popular exhibit. Ethan Lim on Ms Pearly

Interview with MRA licenced Penang – based trainer, Sharee Kim Hamilton Front Runner had a chat with trainer Sharee Kim Hamilton, a New Zealander who has her stables at Penang Turf Club

FR How did you get involved in racing?

I have been riding since the age of 5 at pony clubs, showing, etc. but only got involved in racing through an apprentice jockeyship at the age of 15. SKH

How did you end up making Malaysia and Penang in FR particular your base seeing that you are from New Zealand?

I followed trainer John Sargent, a fellow New Zealander here as his track rider and have never looked back, since. SKH

I understand that you are married to jockey, Salee bin Saad. FR Could you share with us how both of you got together?

My husband, Salee was then an apprentice jockey here at Penang Turf Club, who had the courage to ask me out for dinner and following that, we started dating seriously and got married. We are blessed with two beautiful children; Samuel the elder of the two at 17 years old and Shaydinah who is 15 years old. SKH

FR What made you decide to become a trainer here?

It is all thanks to the support I received from former Committee Member Dato’ John Alexander Rodgers. It was a long learning process for me as I went from a track rider, to a Stable Supervisor, then as Assistant Trainer (B Licence) before achieving my licence as an A licenced trainer. It took almost five years for me to achieve my Trainers Licence. SKH

FR Have you any comments on training here in Penang?

I love to train here in Penang as the stables and facilities provided by the Club are adequate and well maintained. I am fortunate that we have Committee Member, Dato’ Seri Teh Choon Beng, a Champion Trainer himself that I go to for advice. Dato’ Seri Teh Choon Beng has given me a lot of guidance in the care of my horses and together with the Committee of the Penang Turf Club has also provided freight subsidies, bonus incentives, etc. to the trainers here. The environment here in Penang is also more relaxed making it more conducive for the horses.

I cannot ask for more training in Penang. Hopefully, I will be able to have more owners to support me and end up in the final top three of the trainers’ championship. SKH

PATIENCE PAYS OFF King Win rewarded connections with The Royal Bangkok Sports Club Trophy win

King Win (Echoes Of Heaven - Princess Guru by Ishiguru) arrived in Malaysia as a three-year-old in early 2018 and his connections waited several months, until he turned four, before entering him for a race. In the space of three months in late 2018, the New Zealand entire raced five times for a second and a fourth. They showed more patience with King Win in 2019 and were rewarded when he won the RM30,000 The Royal Bangkok Sports Club Trophy in Penang on July 28, 2019. It was only his third start of the year. Jockey Lim Aun Kean settled King Win just behind the Trainer Leong Poh Keong Penang Turf Club President Dato pace set by Supreme Sasso (Due Sasso - Bare Assessment by receiving his prize from Ong Eng Khuan presenting a Mr Thapabutr Jamasevi memento to Mr Thapabutr Jamasevi Honor Grades) and the leader kicked clear soon after entering the straight. Istanbul’s newly elected mayor, Mr. Ekrem Imamoglu received a standing ovation when he presented the jockey’s award to Celik. The owner of the winning horse received US$398,272 from the total stakes of US$602,363 (about RM2,560,000) for the race that opened to three-year-olds. In addition, US$136,255 was paid out to the top four horses as a breeding premium payment to the owners. Following the Derby, I visited Troy. Troy is situated on the Asian side of Turkey at the entrance of the Daranell’s Strait leading to the Sea of Marmara and Bosphorus Strait. Because of its strategic location between two continents and between two seas, the Aegean Sea and the Black Sea, Troy had been a settlement dating back to 3,000BC. Troy was only discovered in 1868 by a farmer and English archaeologist, Frank Calvert. Troy was declared a UNESCO Heritage site and over 300,000 tourists visit the ruins annually.
