  • Subject: Result of the 40Th Japan Cup (G1)
FROM: Junichi Takada General Manager, Media & Publicity Department, THE JAPAN RACING ASSOCIATION (JRA) DATE: November 29, 2020 SUBJECT: RESULT OF THE 40TH JAPAN CUP (G1) The Japan Cup, in its 40th year, continues to attract some of the top turf horses from around the world—67 runners from North America, 146 from Europe, 26 from Oceania and five from Asia—while a number of runners have made this race their starting point towards further international success in following years. Last year’s version was won by Suave Richard (JPN, by Heart’s Cry), marking his second G1 victory after claiming the Osaka Hai (G1, 2,000m) in 2018. Behind in second was three-year-old filly Curren Bouquetd’or who registered her third runner-up effort at the G1 level—the other two were the Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks, 2,400m) and the Shuka Sho (2,000m)—and was followed by 2018 Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby, G1, 2,400m) victor Wagnerian (JPN, by Deep Impact) in third. This year, the Japan Cup welcomed French contender Way To Paris. After finishing second to subsequent Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (G1, 2,400m) winner Sottsass (FR, C4, by Siyouni) in the Prix Ganay (G1, 2,100m) in June, the gray registered his first group-one title in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud (2,400m) before turning in a ninth in his latest start, the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Meanwhile, the focus was centered on the three Triple Crown winners. Three-year-old filly Daring Tact claimed the Shuka Sho (G1, 2,000m; Oct.18) to become the sixth filly to capture the fillies’ Triple Crown title and moreover, the first in JRA history to do so undefeated.

Exclusive Topics for JAPAN AUTUMN INTERNATIONAL 2019 - 3rd Edition - November 2019 The Japan Racing Association The most prestigious prep race towards the Japan Cup (G1, 2,400m), the Tenno Sho (Autumn) (G1, 2,000m), was held on Oct. 27 at Tokyo Racecourse and won by 2018 Japan Cup victor Almond Eye (JPN, F4, by Lord Kanaloa). The four-year-old Lord Kanaloa filly, who competed against a quality field that included 10 G1 winners, quickly secured a forward position along the rails from an inside draw (No.2) and easily drew away at the stretch to score a three-length victory. Almond Eye’s connections, however, wanting to be sure that the filly has plenty of time to recover, have chosen the Hong Kong Cup (G1, 2,000m) on Dec. 8 as her next target upon returning from Northern Farm Ten-ei in Fukushima Prefecture, where she is on a short break. You Can Smile (JPN, C4, by King Kamehameha), Wagnerian (JPN, C4, by Deep Impact) and Makahiki (JPN, H6, by Deep Impact), all trained by Yasuo Tomomichi (Ritto Training Center), finished fourth, fifth and tenth, respectively, and will run in the Japan Cup.

  • Exclusive Topics for Horse Racing in Japan – Summer Edition –
Exclusive Topics for Horse Racing in Japan – Summer Edition – July 2021 The Japan Racing Association JRA-organized races and racegoers have fortunately been able to avoid the worst effects of the COVID-19 pandemic this year. Whereas races had to be held in front of empty stands from mid- January, venues gradually began to reopen their doors with capacity limitations as early as March, Nakayama Racecourse being the last to do so in April. With the exception of the February Stakes, the spring G1 series was able to be held with the attendance and support of fans. The World All-Star Jockeys, however, which is held annually in Sapporo in late August, had to be canceled for the second year in a row. Major spring events around the world resumed this year. At the Dubai World Cup day meeting in late March, Japanese contenders registered runner-up efforts in four G1 races on the card. The following month, they swept the top four places in Hong Kong’s Queen Elizabeth II Cup (G1, 2,000m), where Loves Only You (JPN, M5, by Deep Impact) took home first prize. As contenders expected to compete abroad this autumn gradually coming to light, six home-bred nominees for this year’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (G1, 2,400m) on October 3 were announced in May. The first potential Arc runner to be announced was Deep Bond (JPN, C4, by Kizuna), who was 10th, 5th and 4th in last year’s Triple Crown races, each time behind champion Contrail (JPN, C4, by Deep Impact) who made a clean sweep.

  • Subject: Result of the 85Th Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby
FROM: Masahiro Usuda General Manager, Media & Publicity Department, THE JAPAN RACING ASSOCIATION (JRA) DATE: May 27, 2018 SUBJECT: RESULT OF THE 85TH TOKYO YUSHUN (JAPANESE DERBY, G1) With the aim of establishing a systemized program that emulates the Triple Crown race held in Britain, and enhancing the quality of thoroughbreds in Japan, a 2,400-meter race for three-year-old thoroughbreds was established at the Tokyo Racecourse (then situated in Meguro ward) in 1932. While maintaining its status as one of the most popular JRA events with a record crowd of 196,517 in 1990, the race has evolved during its long history, opening its door to runners from National Association of Racing (NAR; local public racing) since 1995 and foreign-bred participants since 2001. In 2010, the race entered a new phase as JRA reached the final stage of its internationalization project, allowing foreign contestants in all its graded events. The winner’s prize money, which had already exceeded 100 million yen in 1989, has now reached 200 million, making it the third richest race behind the Japan Cup (G1, 2,400m) and the Arima Kinen (G1, 2,500m). Recent winners include Vodka (JPN, by Tanino Gimlet) who became the first filly in 64 years to claim the derby title in 2007 and Orfevre (JPN, by Stay Gold) who subsequently became the seventh Triple Crown winner in JRA history and won against older G1 winners in the year-end Arima Kinen to become the Horse of the Year of 2011. Top five finishers of the Satsuki Sho (Apr.15)—Epoca d’Oro, Sans Rival, Generale Uno, Stelvio and Kitano Commandeur—acquired their tickets to this race while grade-race winners Grail (6th), Wagnerian (7th), Gendarme (9th), Time Flyer (10th) and Oken Moon (12th) attempted to exceed their performances in the first leg.

  • Subject: Results of the 65Th Osaka Hai (G1)
FROM: Media & Publicity Department, THE JAPAN RACING ASSOCIATION (JRA) DATE: April 4, 2021 SUBJECT: RESULTS OF THE 65TH OSAKA HAI (G1) The Osaka Hai, renewing its name in 2017 from the familiarly known Sankei Osaka Hai, was established in 1957 as a handicap race open to runners of four years of age and upwards run over 1,800m at Hanshin Racecourse in March. After the distance was extended to 2,000m in 1972, the date was moved to one week earlier to the Oka Sho (Japanese 1000 Guineas) in 1981. The race was given G2 status in conjunction with the new grading system in 1984, opened its doors to foreign competitors in 2003 and was upgraded to G1 in 2017. The winner of the race will automatically earn a starting position in the Irish Champion Stakes (G1, 2,000m) held in September. Attracting strong contenders by serving as a prep race for G1 spring races for older horses such as the Tenno Sho (Spring) (G1, 3,200m) and the Takarazuka Kinen (G1, 2,200m), many Osaka Hai champions have gone on to achieve G1 successes; Meisho Samson (JPN, by Opera House) in 2007, Hiruno d’Amour (JPN, by Manhattan Cafe) in 2011, two-time Horse of the Year Kitasan Black (JPN, by Black Tide) in 2017, all went on to capture the Tenno Sho (Spring) that followed; and Dream Journey (JPN, by Stay Gold) in 2009 landed his Takarazuka Kinen victory two starts later. Last year’s victor Lucky Lilac (JPN, by Orfevre) went on to defend her Queen Elizabeth II Cup (G1, 2,200m) title last November.

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 2020 FOR PLESA, A BITTERSWEET VIADERA, BLOWOUT GIVE BROWN ONE-TWO IN MATRIARCH ENDING TO CALDER SAGA Chad Brown stablemates Viadera (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}) and Blowout (GB) (Dansili {GB}) took their show on the road, but the result was the same as once again Juddmonte Farms= Viadera got the best of her gutsy rival to win the GI Matriarch S. with a dramatic late surge at Del Mar Sunday. When the duo last met, Viadera was just able to get to the line first after Blowout set a torrid pace in the Sept. 25 GIII Noble Damsel S. at Belmont Park. Blowout zipped out to the early lead at Del Mar Sunday, was clear around the first turn and completed the opening quarter in :22.62, but Juddmonte homebred Juliet Foxtrot (GB) (Dansili {GB}) surged to the lead midway down the backstretch and was two lengths in front of Blowout through a half in :45.63 as Viadera remained unhurried near the back of the pack. Cont. p5 Gulfstream Park West | Ryan Thompson IN TDN EUROPE TODAY TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT THE DIOMED DRAFT The Week in Review, by Bill Finley Emma Berry speaks with trainer Stuart Williams on MGSW From a racing standpoint, there could not have been a more Breathtaking Look (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}), who will sell as appropriate way for Calder to go out.
