FRANKEL TURNS TO TONY WILLIAMS APPOINTED AQUIS STUD FARM CEO GOLD AT Tony Williams has been appointed as the CEO of Aquis Stud Farm as of Jan. 1, 2020, after Aquis=s Board of Directors decided to separate the stud farm operations across three Australian states from Aquis=s Australian and international racing businesses. Previously the Managing Director of Goffs UK since late in 2016, Williams brings over 40 years of experience to the role. He also spent time working with Magic Millions and Newgate Farm, as well as an agent for the Hong Kong Jockey Club. AI=m extremely honoured to be joining the Aquis Farm team,@ said Williams. ATheir foresight and ingenuity at becoming a market leader is second to none, and I can=t wait to ensure the vision of the Fung family comes to fruition. Having been in the UK for the past few years, I=d like to thank Goffs for the opportunities presented to me, while I am looking forward to heading back to and being located in Queensland.@ Cont. p14 IN TDN AMERICA TODAY Lot 288, Wednesday=s session-topping colt | Tattersalls LAFFINA THE LATEST SUCCESS FOR BLACKRIDGE Bill Finley speaks with Bill Daugherty of BlackRidge Partners By Emma Berry and Kelsey Riley regarding Grade I producer Laffina (Arch), who will sell at the Fasig- NEWMARKET, UKCA Frankel (GB) half-brother to Derby and Tipton November Sale. The colt (lot 288) will race for the man who now stands his illustrious sibling at Dalham Hall Stud, with Sheikh Mohammed once coming out on top after a ringside tussle with MV Magnier. The colt becomes the second-highest priced yearling colt in the world thus far in 2019, bettered only by Tuesday=s session-topping 3.6-million gns (Ire) colt. While day one was all about Dubawi on the sire front, the spoils were better spread around during the second session, with Frankel, (GB), Siyouni (Fr) and (Ire) each responsible for a millionaire. Set against an exceptionally strong second session at Book 1 last year, Wednesday=s trade could not reach that previous high bar. But the average was still 242,106gns (-23%) and the median 150,000gns (-21%), figures which would be the envy of most other sales companies. The most significant adjustment came in the clearance rate, which in 2018 reached 91% but this time dropped to 84% following the sale of 132 yearlings for a total of 31,958,000gns (-22%). Tattersalls October Book 1 Cont. from p1 Lot 288's dam Fleche d=Or (GB) (Dubai Destination) has provided many high days for her breeder Anthony Oppenheimer, especially through Golden Horn, who also won the G1 Eclipse S. and G1 Irish Champion S. in a brilliant 3-year-old season before being sold to Darley. But the herself had been considered surplus to requirements at Hascombe & Valiant Studs when her future star was just a foal and she was sold at the December Sale for 62,000gns to a three-strong partnership which includes Harry McCalmont whose Norelands Stud consigned the colt. While Oppenheimer looked on from the stairs, it proved to be a red-letter day for McCalmont and Norelands, who had already breached the seven-figure barrier when selling a Siyouni colt during the morning for 1.3 million gns to Coolmore on behalf of his longstanding client Bob Scarborough. He said, AI normally don=t have a talking but we=ve never sold anything quite like this before. The previous highest price for us came only a few hours ago. Who are they? The short answer is, a group of investors specializing in the oil and gas businesses, who, so far, can=t seem to do anything wrong. Their first-ever racing investment was to buy into California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit) shortly before his win in the 2016 G1 . Their second was to snag a piece of Cathryn Sophia (Street Boss) right before her win in the GI Kentucky Oaks in 2016. They bought into two proven horses and did so before their value peaked. But they=ve also shown a knack for finding talent on their own. The first broodmare ever purchased by the BlackRidge team is named Laffina (Arch). They bought her privately after she RNA=d for $290,000 at the 2016 Keeneland November sale. Laffina wasn=t a notable runner during a brief career in Ireland. But no one is looking at her racing record right now, not after her first foal has turned out to be two-time Grade I winner Bast (Uncle Mo). Now it is time for BlackRidge to cash in. Laffina will sell at the Fasig-Tipton November sale, where she is among the more attractive mares in the catalogue. Cont. p3 PUBLISHER & CEO Sue Morris Finley @suefinley [email protected]

Laffina the Latest Success for BlackRidge (cont. from p1) AWe can=t afford to keep her,@ said Bill Daugherty, one of the partners in BlackRidge. AShe=s become too valuable. She needs now to go to the right farm.@ Daugherty runs BlackRidge along with his son, Will, and their business partner, Bill Barr. For them, racing is a side business. The main business is BlackRidge Resource Partners, an investment firm specializing in the oil and gas industries. AComing from the oil and gas business, we=re used to analyzing deals,@ Daugherty said. ABasically, we use the same philosophies we apply to our main business that we do to the horses. I look at a mare or horse prospect the same way I look at an oil prospect and try to project what the results will be.@ BlackRidge Resource Partners was formed in 2011, five years before the company decided to branch off into racing. For people who live in Lexington and had already enjoyed the sport on a causal basis, racing was a natural path to follow. AIf you live in Lexington, you feel like you=re part of the racing industry every day because it=s such a big part of the community,@ Barr said. ABoth Bill and I have been interested in for years and spent a lot of time going to Keeneland. In 2016, we decided it was a good time and we had a good opportunity to get started in the racing business.@ That was because the BlackRidge group knew the team at Taylor Made and when Taylor Made presented them with the opportunity to become part of the group that was buying into California Chrome in 2016, they accepted. They enjoyed his 2016 racing campaign in which he won not only the Dubai World Cup, but the GI Awesome Again S. and the GI Pacific Classic, important wins that led to a Horse of the Year title and increased his value as a sire. From the start, BlackRidge has leaned on Taylor Made Senior Account Manager Jeff Hayslett. AWhat=s cool about Laffina is that BlackRidge is a new entity in the business,@ said Taylor Made Vice President Mark Taylor. AJeff Hayslett is one of the longest-standing employees that Taylor Made has. He=s like family. He was the one counseling BlackRidge when they got into the business. He helped them pick out [Laffina], and the rest is history.@ Wanting to support California Chrome as a sire, the BlackRidge partners started shopping the fall mixed sales. The idea was to find mares that would be the building blocks for a broodmare band. Today, they have nine. AWe wanted our broodmare band to start out with a bang,@ Barr said. They had Laffina on a short list of horses they might want to buy, but they thought the asking price at $290,000 was a bit too high. Still, they didn=t give up on acquiring her. MEMORIAL AT THISTLEDOWN FOR CHERYL WHITE, FIRST BLACK FEMALE JOCKEY by T.D. Thornton A memorial to celebrate the life of Cheryl White, the nation=s first black female jockey, will be held at Thistledown Oct. 18. White died Sep. 20 at age 65 at her Ohio home after a brief illness, according to published obituaries. On June 15, 1971, at age 17, White made history as the first African-American female jockey in America when she rode Ace Reward at Thistledown. She rode her first winner September 2, 1971, at Waterford Park on Jetolara, becoming the first black woman in the country to win a race. Her breakthrough rides made newspaper headlines in her Cheryl White home state of Ohio, and White graced the cover of Jet magazine, the most influential African-American publication of its time. White was born into a horse racing family. Her father, Raymond White, Sr., was an accomplished Thoroughbred trainer, and her mother, Doris, owned racehorses. White earned an academic scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University and was planning on becoming a math teacher. But she decided to pursue her equine passion for a little while, and then attend college. That Alittle while@ ended up lasting 21 years in the saddle. In a profile published six months ago on the website BetChicago, White said her parents= initial support for her career choice was mixed. AThey encouraged me, but with my father being in the horse business, he wasn't exactly in favor of female riders,@ White said. AMy dad was just old school and didn't believe, like many old timers, that women belonged around the racetrack. There was a time when women weren't even allowed on the backstretch after five o=clock. But my parents didn't try to talk me out of it, either.@ White moved her tack west in 1974, but had difficulty breaking into California=s ultra-competitive Thoroughbred circuit. She stayed, though, after finding success as an in-demand rider for Quarter Horses, Paints and Appaloosas at the state=s county fairs. According to the BetChicago story, she topped the rider standings and earned the Appaloosa Horse Club's Jockey of the Year in 1977, 1983, 1984 and 1985, and was inducted into the Appaloosa Hall of Fame in 2011. DOEGE NAMED TTA ACCREDITATION MANAGER Amber Doege has been appointed the Accreditation Manager and Racing Coordinator of The Texas Thoroughbred Association it was announced Wednesday. Doege is replacing Jennifer Gibbs, who is retiring later this year after 20 years of service. Doege, daughter of longtime Texas-based trainer Glenn, brings nearly 20 years of experience in the industry, served in various capacities over the past two decades, including assistant racing secretary, stakes coordinator, horse identifier, paddock judge, placing judge and claims clerk at tracks around the region such as Retama Park, Lone Star Park, Delta Downs and Fair Grounds. Doege earned a bachelor=s degree at Texas State University with a major in animal science. Opinions: The time for horse racing has passed. It=s time to outlaw it. Horse racing might be a nuisance to many track owners, but it is a menace to the animals it depends on. As the staggering toll in dead horses becomes clear, Americans should consider asking their state and federal legislators to outlaw a cruel pastime whose time has passed.
