one · Gender and the Problem of Prehistory IMAGINING PREHISTORY To examine the contested issue of gender in ancient Near Eastern prehistory, I be- gin with a definition of the period. Prehistory is the time before the invention of writing (which took place around 3500 bce in the ancient Near East). This period is divided into several major eras of human development in eastern Europe and the ancient Near East: late Paleolithic (c. 30,000–9000 bce), proto-Neolithic and Neo- lithic (c. 9000–5600 bce), and Calcolithic (5600–3500 bce). In the European late Paleolithic, we begin to have some evidence of human creative consciousness in the form of cave paintings, figurines, and tools decorated with designs or with figures of animals or humans. The Neolithic is divided from the Paleolithic by the move- ment from food gathering (hunting and collecting fruits, nuts, and plants) to food growing and domestication of animals. The Calcolithic describes a time of more developed agriculture (including the use of the plow and irrigation) as well as trade and early urbanization. The Neolithic revolution took place gradually in the ancient Near East between 9000 and 7000 bce. At first, herds of wild animals or areas of wild grains were cor- doned oª and controlled by more settled human groups; later, with full domestica- tion, animals were bred for food, milk, or skins, and seeds were conserved for plant- ing grains. These innovations developed along parallel lines in several places in the ancient Near East and spread to other nearby areas. There was not a uniform, straightforward pattern of development. -

Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. 15 January, 2018 2 Abstract This PhD is a genealogy and critical examination of the writings and films of Laura Mulvey and Peter Wollen, spanning the period from the early 1960s to 1980s. Despite the prominence of their texts, there has not been a book-length study of either body of writing, nor an overview of their overlap and mutual influence, in what was their most productive period. Nor has there been an extended account of the important connection between their theory and their practice as filmmakers. My thesis undertakes these tasks. I interpret and challenge existing scholarship, while simultaneously examining in detail for the first time lesser-known works, drawing on archives and interviews. Through close readings I elucidate Mulvey’s interrogation of the patriarchal fantasies structuring cinematic and artistic forms and her feminist appropriation of classical Hollywood melodrama; I map the related issues Wollen’s texts activate, of cinematic signification and materialism, the buried potentialities of the historical avant-gardes, and their connection to the avant-garde film contemporaneous with his writings. Their moving image works, I demonstrate through detailed analyses, bring these ideas into dialogue and work them through in a more open, exploratory vein. I trace key notions like ‘counter cinema’ across films and writings by both authors. -
Feminism and Greek Archaeology: an Encounter Long Over-Due*
FEMINISM AND GREEK ARCHAEOLOGY: AN ENCOUNTER LONG OVER-DUE* Archaeology, feminism, and innovation The second wave of feminism in the 1970s had an important impact on the academic community in North America and Western Europe, resulting in new research avenues and more professional opportunities for women. Archaeology was, however, late to embrace feminist interests. This reluctance can be explained in terms of the following developments: • dominance of processualism in anthropological archaeology, since the 1960s, which promoted normative explanations of human behaviour as a mere reflection of environmental adaptation and socio-economic structure1 • a strong historical-philological tradition in classical archaeology, which often placed uncritical faith on textual evidence without considering the prejudices of ancient writers2 • under-representation of women in the profession, especially in the higher ranks.3 Since the 1980s, many archaeologists became dissatisfied with the ways the past was portrayed in previous approaches. A broader intellectual climate of critical awareness has favoured the development of post-processual archaeologies which shifted emphasis to human agency and historical contingency; acknowledged archaeology’s relations to political authority and the impact of modern experience on scholarly constructs about the past; exposed the ways in which the past is perceived differentially by individuals and/or social groups; and recognised the needs and experiences of the recipients of archaeological knowledge, who may eventually also become producers of new interpretations. Shaking the previous confidence in “testable objectivity,” these new perspectives strive to understand the culturally- specific manifestations of identity and “otherness,” and explore new possibilities of rethinking about the past and present. A growing validation of pluralism has encouraged feminist responsiveness in archaeology in many international contexts (USA, Britain, Norway, Germany, Spain, Australia, and elsewhere). -

A FEMININE ALTERNATIVE: MARIJA GIMBUTAS AND THE MATRIFOCAL MODEL By SEAN MILLER Integrated Studies Project submitted to Dr. Lisa Micheelsen in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts – Integrated Studies Athabasca, Alberta August 2014 Table of Contents Abstract................................ 3 Introduction.......................... 5 Part One................................ 8 Part Two................................ 26 Part Three.............................. 49 Conclusion............................. 60 Bibliography.......................... 63 3 Abstract During the 20th century, in tandem with transformations within and challenges to the traditional Western archaeological canon, a new and highly contentious theory gradually evolved within the halls of academia, a theory which contended that egalitarian and women-centred societies proliferated within “Old Europe”, a geographical territory which today encompasses parts of Eastern Europe and the Greek Isles, during the Neolithic, New Stone, and Copper Ages (roughly 6500-3500 B.C.). The basic tenets of this theory are centred upon the notion that within these ancient societies women and men lived as relative equals in virtually all aspects of daily life. Moreover, women were often accorded esteemed status due to their reproductive capabilities; indeed, the identity of women as life-givers was closely tied to the life-giving goddess who served as the focal point of Old European religion. Although this “matrifocal” model for Old European society has its share of supporters and proponents, the individual most responsible for its formulation and subsequent dissemination was the renowned and highly accomplished Lithuanian archaeologist Marija Gimbutas. Gimbutas incorporated her extensive knowledge of prehistoric Eastern European folklore and burial rites, the symbolic nature of the multitude of artifacts accrued from her Eastern European excavations, and her fluency in a number of different languages (including those of Eastern European origin) in order to develop the matrifocal model. -

Jalbert A Dissertation submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Archaeology, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Memorial University of Newfoundland May 2019 St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador [email protected] ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the demographic composition and current working conditions among archaeological practitioners in Canada. Previous research documenting the archaeological population has occurred most readily in the United States and the United Kingdom; by contrast, little is known about the Canadian context. To explore this topic, I executed a mixed-methods research design that gathered longitudinal data pertaining to education and employment in archaeology, administered an online survey to the current archaeological population in Canada, and conducted semi-structured interviews with women currently situated within the discipline. The presentation of a long-term, gendered analysis (binary) of available datasets on the archaeological population revealed that more women are educated in archaeology/anthropology departments but are underrepresented in both academic and CRM workplaces. Using both quantitative and qualitative analyses, these structural data were supplemented and compared with the results yielded through the survey and interviews. While the quantitative analysis of survey data further contextualized these findings and aimed to facilitate an understanding of the dynamics at play in archaeological education and work, the qualitative, thematic analysis of interviews allowed these findings to be explored through lived experiences. By approaching this research through a feminist, intersectional lens, these data were used to attempt to develop relational understandings beyond the male/female dichotomy and explore the social composition of archaeology through other identity-based variables. -

Archaeology has always been closely tied to political movements and social ideologies, and the rapid change in Western society’s opinion and interpretation of gender throughout the 20 th century sparked a great methodological change in the field. The feminist movement of the 1960s, which continues today, caused the creation of a new, feminized outlook on archaeology. This new theoretical framework addressed many of the patriarchal biases imbued in the excavation and analysis of past archaeology. However, despite its progress towards the study of gender in archaeology, the feminist theory introduced a new set of biases to archaeological research. The new gender based feminist theory was developed and refined into the gender theory applied by archaeologists today. Nevertheless, even with the improvements in archaeological theory that the gender focus provides, many researchers continue to analyze civilizations, such as the Etruscan civilization from 10 th to 1st century Italy with older, more biased methods. -

CEU eTD Collection ii Abstract This dissertation presents a transnational biography and reception history of Marija Gimbutas (1921-1994) – a renowned Lithuanian-American archaeologist, and an advocate of the theory of the peaceful, egalitarian, gynocentric and Goddess-centered prehistoric civilization of “Old Europe”. Gimbutas’ utopian antimodernist vision became a source of inspiration for a variety of socio-political movements (environmentalist, feminist, neo-pagan, among others) in diverse geographical contexts, on both sides of and transgressing the “Iron Curtain”, starting with the 1970s and reaching a peak during the 1990s. This dissertation analyzes how Gimbutas’ work and persona were received, constructed and appropriated, and sometimes rejected, in diverse contexts, namely, archaeology and feminist archaeology, the feminist spirituality movement in the United States and post-socialist Lithuanian feminism. The dissertation combines historical methods with theoretical perspectives developed in feminist and postcolonial/postsocialist studies to produce a critical account of Gimbutas’ life and work, as well as to discuss how various actors have related to and made use of her ideas. -

Women, weaponry and warfare A multidisciplinary study of the use of weapons by women in Dynastic Egypt Number of Volumes: 2 Volume 1 of 2 Rebecca Angharad Dean M.Phil University of York Archaeology March 2013 ii Abstract This thesis is a detailed study of the utilisation of weaponry by ancient Egyptian women during the Dynastic Period. This work incorporates extended literature reviews, including a detailed discussion of several examples of women utilising weaponry and taking part in warfare in societies outside of Dynastic Egypt, an analysis of feminist and gender-based approaches to the subject, an examination of women within ancient Egyptian society, and a review of the specific weapons associated with these women. Detailed experimental archaeology also forms part of the thesis research in order to test the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of the specific weaponry when utilised by both men and women. In addition to the experimental work, a comparative discussion of examples of weapons’ trauma on ancient Egyptian remains is carried out. The thesis concludes with the discussion of research carried out and the potential for future work, and the conclusions drawn from all aspects of the thesis research. A catalogue of unpublished ancient Egyptian weaponry in the collections of the Harrogate Royal Pump Room Museum and the Yorkshire Museum in York is also included as an Appendix to the thesis.
