Welcome to The Elloe Oracle Magazine

Dear Friends and Neighbours

We know that summer is here when the drinks get colder ,music gets louder, the nights get longer and life just seems to get better. This summer we have the World Cup in Russia and if you don't like football why not try one of the many music , food and lifestyle festivals. I will be packing my bucket and spade and heading off to the Norfolk coast for a paddle. We have so many great places to visit right here on our doorstep. So why not keep it local - you might be surprised at what’s on offer! Have a great Summer!

Best Wishes Janet

New releases for Jun/Jul 2018

Eleanor Oliphant has learned how to survive – but not how to live . Eleanor Oliphant leads a simple life. She wears the same clothes to work every day, eats the same meal deal for lunch every day and buys the same two bottles of vodka to drink every weekend. Eleanor Oliphant is happy. Nothing is missing from her carefully timetabled life. Except, sometimes, everything. One simple act of kindness is about to shatter the walls Eleanor has built around herself. Now she must learn how to navigate the world that everyone else seems to take for granted – while searching for the courage to face the dark corners she’s avoided all her life. Change can be good. Change can be bad. But surely any change is better than… fine?

South Holland District Council

South Holland has a new District Councillor with Sue Wray winning the By-Election for the Donington, and Ward. It was quite fitting that Sue was elected as the election was called due to the sad passing of her partner Robert Clarke. Andrew, Anthony and Rodney welcome Sue to the Council and look forward to working with her. There’s been positive feedback to Jobcentre Plus which relocated to the offices of SHDC a few weeks ago. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) relocated its offices from Westlode Street in Spalding to the ground floor of the council building on Priory Road. The project is part of a national co-location programme by DWP to co-locate with councils to offer a more joined-up public service to residents. Still on the subject of employment, the annual South Holland Jobs Fair took place at the beginning of May and gave visitors the opportunity to speak to over 50 employers and training providers from a range of industries who are recruiting in our area. The event was a great success, and it’s good to see so many local employment opportunities in the District. Despite fears of a lost service, good news came after much lobbying, that Stagecoach announced that the 505 Spalding to King’s Lynn service, covering (amongst others) Weston and Moulton, will continue to be run. The new slightly revised service which reverts to a half-hourly, instead of buses every 20 minutes, from 8am until 6pm, Mondays to Saturdays, came into effect from Monday, April 29th.

Cowbit Parish Council News

Reports from the most recent Parish Council meeting held on 14th March, the Annual General Meeting. Severe damage was caused by 'the beast from the East' earlier this year to the pavilion in the playing field. Water had been reported pouring through the doors, upon inspection it was noted that a pipe in the ceiling had burst causing so much damage. An insurance claim was made and works began to put right all the damage, two local business men had also been asked to work on the repairs, keeping everything local. Work is still ongoing. The AGM didn't bring any changes to the helm of the Parish Council, Cllr Trevor Tyrrell staying as Chairman, Cllr Peter Simpson as Vice Chairman and supported by Cllrs Harold Sharman and Chris Elliott. A new face had joined, Mr Iain Hook was co-opted on to the Parish Council, now Cllr Hook, so now at full strength. More improvement work for the playing field is planned, next on the list is the purchase of some heavy duty picnic tables/benches. The bench on Barrier Bank overlooking has now been returned after been given a facelift and also turned round so views over The Wash can be enjoyed. Final call for those who want to join the Community Speed Watch, this is voluntary and will help in combating speed within the village. An Archer Survey done during April along Stonegate showed that traffic speed is now below the maximum of 30mph. Thank you to all for observing the speed limit, other areas still need improving especially Barrier Bank. The new Parish Notice board has been erected on the Village School railings which will contain news and information from both the Parish Council and Village school. Date of the next Parish Council meeting is 25th June at 7.30pm at Cowbit Village Hall. Carol Mackenzie Parish Clerk. Tel: 01775 670375 [email protected]

Life’s Journey. Dear Friends

The usual goals in life are getting married, having 2.3 children (normally a boy and a girl, not too sure what the 0.3 ends up being), having a satisfying, well paid job, a nice house with all mod cons, a good car, living happily ever after with a loving and devoted spouse (the same one you married at the start), with an excellent pension and at least one (and hopefully two or even three) overseas holidays every year along the way. Oh, and the health to enjoy all the above. It might be that one of the above is slightly higher in your list of priorities than another but add a few ‘bucket list’ items (i.e. visit the Eifel Tower, the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Barrier Reef, shake hands with the Queen, jump out of a plane with a parachute and live to tell the tale, write a best-selling critically acclaimed novel etc) and in our popular imagination that should mean a successful and satisfying life. I suggested that the journey – the how – of achieving all the above is just as important as any achievements we may make along the way. The hope is that we take the time to savour the special moments all the way to the big achievements. The ‘how’ is an awareness of the moments and an awareness that God is in those moments with you. I hope we all achieve our life’s goals but there is an inherent problem in looking at a person’s life as the sum of his or her achievements. It’s this. There is no guarantee we will achieve all these goals or even some of them. But other times we don’t achieve because our circumstances change. We lose our job. Our health deteriorates. Our spouse leaves us. The pension provider goes bankrupt. We can’t afford a holiday. None of those things are good or pleasing; in fact, they can be downright catastrophic. But if we have discovered the abundant life that is along the way, those moments when life is simple and special, the lack of goals being achieved doesn’t mean we are failures. They mean that God’s abundant life is lived in the here and now and not it the distance when we may or may not be staring at the Victoria/Niagara Falls, swimming with dolphins or winning the Man Booker prize for that best-selling novel.

with the Grumpy Grower! As Summer arrives it is time to think about next spring and sow biennials either directly into the ground or into containers.

Poppies will now be past their best, they can be cut down to the ground and they will grow and bloom again this year. Don’t forget to save the seed if seed heads are formed.

Time to plant up your patio containers and hanging baskets. Prune back spring flowering shrubs. Cut out the older stems and leave this years growth to flower next spring.

Violas will be getting a bit straggly—you can trim them back or if you want to increase them work some good compost into them forming a mound. Water well and keep moist. In a few weeks time the long ,straggly, stems will have formed roost in the compost. Split the clump into smaller plants and pot up or plant out.

It’s not too late to plant tomatoes—nothing better than picking your own straight from the Vine!

14

Calling all flower arrangers! Now is the time to pick flowers for drying. Some flowers are easier to dry than others but it is still worth having a go! Just pick them and hang them upside down by the stem in a cool place with plenty of air circulation. Some varieties to try are honesty pods, achillea, amaranth us, delphinium, golden rod, helipterum and rhodanthe. Good luck!

Plant flag iris –these need a well drained soil. Scrape out a shallow hole, plant the Rhizome on its side only 1/2 in the soil and water in. It is also time to divide older clumps of Iris ap- prox. 5 weeks after flowering. Older clumps of Daffodils can also be split now. This will keep them vigorous and improve their flowering next year.

Clematis pruning! If the variety flowers before the end of June prune immediately after flowering by cutting back side shoots. Leaving 2-3 shoots after main stem. If the variety flowers after June then leave pruning until the Autumn or even next February.

WESTON PARISH COUNCIL

The Parish Council AGM was held on 14th May. Richard Pratt and Chris Dicks were elected to serve for another year as Chairman and Vice-Chairman. The Annual Return and Statement of Governance for the year to 31st March 2018 (the Parish Council’s accounts) were approved after being audited by Andrew Short. He has undertaken the internal audit for a number of years and gives his time voluntarily for which the Parish Council is grateful. The Parish Council also adopted policies relating to the new General Data Protection Regulations which come into force on May 25th. A big thank you to those who took part in the Annual Litter pick on Saturday 5th May – several members of the public turned out to help remove a staggering amount (and variety) of rubbish from Weston and Weston Hills. The Parish Council recognise that the Elloe Oracle is a fantastic publication - keeping every- one up to date with what is happening in the community - and they were happy to make it a grant of £500 towards the costs of publication. There is no Parish Council meeting planned for June so the next one will take place on Monday 2nd July at Weston Village Hall. There is always a 15 minute Open Forum at the start of the meeting for any member of the public to have their say regarding matters which affect them.

STOP SPEEDING IN YOUR VILLAGE “GET INVOLVED” WITH

“COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH”

The Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership has listened to many Parish Councils regarding vehicles constantly speeding through their villages, highlighted by parishioners complaints to their respective Parish Councils. To this end and after consultation with many organisations they are likely to launch, in mid to late May, "Community Speed Watch" in Parishes who wish to participate. Weston Parish Council has received numerous complaints regarding speeding over the past number of years and has actively lobbied the LRSP to this end. With the programme likely to be rolled out this year, Weston Parish Council are now looking for volunteers to come forward to participate in this new innovative programme. Naturally without volunteers Weston Parish Council cannot join other communities around Lincolnshire. Volunteers will receive training but we are already in a position to explain the details of the workings of "Community Speed Watch" to any parishioners interested. If sufficient volunteers come forward then a meeting could be arranged to explain the system and to arrange the necessary training.

For Weston residents further information can be obtained from Cllr Chris Dicks on [email protected]. Other Villages should contact their respective Clerks

NOW’S THE TIME TO STOP COMPLAINING AND GET INVOLVED AND HAVE AN EFFECT WITHIN YOUR COMMUNITY

Life at Weston School continues to be full of positive activity. Our year six children are now in their final few months after working extremely hard for their SATs and our year two children have worked equally hard for their KS1 SATs. Our whole school is now enjoying weekly swimming lessons at Church of Primary School, with the aim of all year six children achieving their 25 metres before leaving primary school. Lessons are tailored to suit children's abilities and confidence in the water and all children are thoroughly enjoying their weekly lesson. In March our KS1 children enjoyed a trip to Burghley House to support their topic 'no place like home' whilst our KS2 children are looking forward to a trip to Flag Fen to support their topic 'Stone Age to Iron Age'. We are also going to be visiting the Baytree Owl and Wildlife Centre where we will get to experience one of their fantastic flying displays. We have recently installed three pieces of children's exercise equipment into our playground; enhancing the activities on offer at break and lunchtimes and helping to encourage children to stay active.

RECYCLING DO’s and DON’Ts At the end of each day, I wash/tidy up before bed, including stuff to be recycled. It doesn’t take long and helps to reduce rejections at the recycling depot. Just one dirty pot in the bag could mean the WHOLE bag is rejected and sent to landfill Recent news, particularly about our marine life, means we have to be even more conscientious about both WHAT we recycle and HOW we recycle. There are alternatives to throwing stuff away. I ,with my wife, recently spent a week in the Yorkshire Moors, there are some Dales as well. We were very fortunate with the weather, and because of this we were able to do a significant amount of walking. We were able to see bluebells, primroses, wild garlic, wood anemones , in large numbers. The trees were in blossom and the variety of green foliage on trees and plants was amazing. We were also able to travel on a steam train to Goathland, the place where Heartbeat was filmed . Whilst returning from our walk we went into the church, which was full of mice. These were all carved on various pieces of wood around the church. This is the mark of Robert Thompson who is well known for his work in churches and other places. We feel very fortunate than we can enjoy all these things and it is when walking though the Dales or along the cliff top that one can only wonder at the beauty of it all. Walking is a good way of thinking and reflecting on the world we live in . I can only come to one conclusion that, for it to be so wonderful, there has to be a God. We can modify and change things and produce new strains of plants ,trees and animals . There is no way we can start from scratch and produce a world as it is, if there was not a creator who started it all off. We need to protect this world in every way we can and also thank God every day for our good fortune.
