Birth of a Conference UNLV Women’s Tennis Regular Season The Mountain West Conference was conceived on May 26, 1998, when the presidents of eight institutions -- Air Force, Brigham Young, Colo- 2009-10 Men’s Swimming & Diving Tournament rado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming -- decided to form a new NCAA FBS intercollegiate athletic conference. The split from the former 16-team WAC re-established continuity and stabi ity among the membership within the new league and signaled the continuation of its traditionrich, long-standing athletic rivalries. Five of the MWC’s eight members have been conference rivals since the 1960s (BYU, Utah, New Mexico, Wyoming and Colorado State), while San Diego State (1978) and Air Force (1980) were longtime members as well. UNLV and TCU entered the fold in 1996 and the Rebels continued as one of the original eight institutions that formed the MWC in 1999. TCU rejoined the group with its first year of competition in the Mountain West in 2005-06. On June 17, 2001, Commissioner Craig Thompson announced the addition of Boise State University to the MWC, effective July 1, 2011. From its inception in 1999, the Mountain West Conference has been committed to excellence in intercollegiate athletics, while promoting the academic missions of its member institutions. The Colorado Springs-based league is noted for its geographic diversity. Some of the most beautiful terrain and landscapes in the nation can be found within the Mountain West boundaries, including the majestic Rocky Mountain range, which borders four MWC schools (Utah, BYU, Air Force and Colorado State). The high plains of Wyoming (elevation 7,220 feet - the highest Division I campus in the nation) contrast with the de ert city of Las Vegas (the fastest growing metropolitan area in the West) and the Pacific locale of San Diego State. The southwestern flavor of New Mexico complements the wes ern heritage and culture of Fort Worth, Texas, home of TCU. MWC members have particpated in 41 bowl games in 11 years, with eight of the nine schools earning at least one bid. The MWC has earned 50 postseason bids in men’s bas- ketball, including 26 NCAA Tourn ment appearances and two NIT Final Four berths; while women’s basketball has tallied 51 postseason bids, inluding 29 NCAA bids, five Sweet 16 appearances and one Elite Eight berth since 2000. The MWC has sent at least 30 teams to NCAA postseason events each year while capturing three team and 24 individual championships in 11 years.

SEASON OUTLOOK / HEAD COACH TIM CHAMBERS timCHAMBERS Tim Chambers was named the sixth UNLV head baseball coach in history, Director of Athletics Jim Livengood announced on June 11.

One of the country's most successful baseball mentors at the high school, American Legion and then junior college levels over the past two decades, Chambers takes over the Rebels after 11 seasons leading the nationally ranked College of Southern Nevada program. He also served as athletics director for CSN since 2003.

"Tim Chambers brings an incredibly accomplished resume with him to UNLV after his years at Bishop Gorman High School and at the College of Southern Nevada," Livengood said. "His knowledge for the game, his love of this community and his total commitment to excellence were all factors that brought us to the decision to hire him to lead our baseball program. Timing is everything and this is the right time for Tim Chambers and the right time for UNLV."

Named the Scenic West Athletic Conference Coach of the Year four times, including last season, Chambers built the Coyotes' powerful pro- gram from the ground up and has enjoyed stunning success: seven conference championships, three region titles, two district crowns and the 2003 JUCO World Series Championship. The 2010 squad, led by top draft pick Bryce Harper, was ranked second in the nation and finished 52-16 overall after reaching the national semifinals earlier this month.

"I want to thank my family at CSN for everything over the past 11 years and now I am looking forward to starting a new family at UNLV," Chambers said. "I'm doing this to have a chance to go to Omaha (for the College World Series). I don't know of many people who get the opportunity to coach at the high school, junior college and Division One levels all in the same town, so this can be something really special."

Before moving to CSN, Chambers served as head coach at Las Vegas' Bishop Gorman High School from 1991-99 where he won six consecu- tive Sunset Division championships (1992-97) and was the state runner-up in 1997. The NIAA High School Baseball Coach of the Year in 1993 and '94 was also head coach of the American Legion Las Vegas Knights from 1991-99, winning numerous local, regional and national awards. The three-time state champions played in the 1998 American Legion World Series and finished the season ranked fifth in the nation.
