Welcome to the second High School Ceremony. The sport has come a long way in the Garden State since the formation of the North Jersey Scholastic League in the winter of 1958 - 59. Only five teams were involved in league competition at that time.

Congratulations The Sport began to take off after the first state championship game was held in March of 1976 at Mennen Arena, between Brick and Chatham Township . Now there are more than175 to the New Jersey high school hockey teams in the state of New Jersey.

As a sophomore he was named All State First Congratulations to Team. He went on with his hockey career while in college and graduated with a BA from Assumption College Vinny Godleski and an MBA in Psychology from Rutgers University. Bob played in the Sunshine Hockey League in Florida and won the championship (1992-93). Bob went on to coach hockey at Tomes River North High School and was part From the NJ Devil’s of starting the hockey program at Monmouth University. He used all his knowledge to author the book, Off Ice Officials Bob Cielo “Winning Hockey Systems and Strategies in all three Zones” published Goalie in 1996. Although Bob tragically CBA passed away, he left an impact on many people.

Anthony Del Gaizo played for MKA for four years, 1979-1982. As a junior he was converted to a defenseman by Coach Tom Preville and was elected first team all-state. The following year he moved back to his natural position, forward and was again nominated first team all-state. MKA won the Gordon Cup in 1982. The 1982 ice hockey team is in the MKA Hall of Fame. Following MKA, Anthony played for Merrimack College where his team played the finals of the NCAA Division II National Championship and he was a first team all tournament selection, Anthony Del Gaizo that was the last year that division Defenseman existed. Anthony is married to his MKA wife Sharon and has three sons, Anthony, Marc and Nicholas, who all play for the NJ Rockets where Anthony is the director of hockey. Lars Johansson was a 1986 Star Ledger All State pick and a member JA-COR INTERNATIONAL INC. of the all 1980’s Decade Team. He was known at Montclair High School for being a standout in every aspect of the game of hockey. Chip played high school hockey at West Essex where he was a three time All League Selection, co-MVP of the league and of the 1978 State Championship team in his senior year. He also won a Jr. National Championship that winter Congratulations with the New Jersey Rockets. Chip went on to play four years at Plattsburgh State where he played in Anthony DelGaizo two National Championships and was selected to the All Tournament Team. Grabowski finished his and the playing career in 1983, after Chip Grabowski participating in the New Jersey Forward Devils Training Camp. He went on to coach at West Essex and Summit 2012 Class West Essex High School. of the

George Parros New Jersey Forward Delbarton High School A prototype power forward, Parros was one of the best forwards in New Jersey in 1997- 98. He finished with 31 goals and 21 assists Hockey for 52 points while helping lead Delbarton to a berth in the NJSIAA Non-Public final. Delbarton finished with an 18-6-2 record that Hall of Fame! season. After high school, he deferred admission to Princeton to play junior hockey with the Chicago Freeze in the NAHL during the 1998-99 season. Playing in the juniors gave him a chance to improve his skills and grow bigger. Parros was drafted by the LA Kings in the 1999 but before going professional. he went on to play hockey at Princeton University for four years. He was named captain in his senior The Bizub Family year for the 2002-03 season. He majored in economics and was recently named the 4th smartest athlete by Sporting News. He earned his way to an NHL career, where he played for the LA Kings, and currently the . He was a member of the Ducks team that won the 2007 . He has a strong fan following known as “Parros Nation”. James van Riemsdyk Forward CBA

James started playing hockey from an early age for the Brick Hockey Club. In High School he starred for two seasons at Christian Brothers Academy where he earned All-State status as a sophomore in the 2004-05 season. His breakaway with 6:17 remaining in in the 2005 NJSIAA Non-Public final gave CBA a dramatic 2-1 overtime victory over Delbarton. After his sophomore year at CBA, he was recruited by the U.S. National Team Developmental Program where he represented his country in international play and participated three times in the World Junior Championships for the USA. In 2007, he was drafted by the but elected to play two years of hockey at the University of New Hampshire. In 2009, he signed a contract with the Flyers and recently signed a six year extension. So far the highlight of his career is reaching the in his rookie season and a strong showing during the 2011 playoffs. James is involved in various charities including “JVR’s MVP’s” which provides a suite at all Flyer home games for Autistic charities and wounded warriors.

Jon grew up with a hockey stick in hand. He attended The Morristown School, currently Morristown Beard, and was the starting goalie his sophomore year. He played center, as a junior and senior, to help the "Crimson" score. His contribution helped the team win the Gordon Cup in 1965 & 1966. As a senior, he was voted Captain of the team, and he won the leagues, Halverson Trophy. [MVP] He continued his education at Norwich University, as captain of the hockey team, and played semi- pro with the So. Mountain Rockets, Bergen Brewers, Newark Sabers, Rockland Colonials and Bricktown. Jon Vlachos Jon was voted as one of the best hockey players, 1960 decade, by the Forward NJ Star Ledger, and voted into the Morristown Beard Morristown Beard Hall of Fame to honor his hockey accomplishments. He played his youth hockey Livingston, NJ 07039 primarily with the NJ Rockets. Williams 973-994-0678 played at Chatham High School for two years. In his freshman year he scored 24 Air Conditioning Heating Alarm Systems goals and had 25 assists as the team Refrigeration, Humidity Control, Ice Makers, Auto & Truck & Electronic went 16-8 and finished in first place in Air Conditioning, Filters, Oil Burners, Hot Water Systems, Steam Boilers, the American Division of the MCSHL. Process Piping, Pumps, Water Conditioning Equipment As a sophomore Williams had 32 goals and 16 assists. After splitting high school hockey with Chatham Township and Choate Rosemary Hall, Dave continued his career at Dartmouth College. While at Dartmouth, he captained the team his senior year and was selected All-Ivy 3 of his 4 years as well as All-American 1 year. After college, he continued playing for 9 years, splitting those years in the NHL and various minor league teams. Most of his NHL time was spent with the San Jose Sharks and the Anaheim Ducks. Dave currently resides on the south shore of Boston with his wife Pam and four children, Chris, Tanner, KC and Lucy.

Mike Giampapa was a standout athlete at West Essex in both soccer and hockey and as a head coach he has also had great success in both sports. In the fall of 1970, he led WE to a state title in soccer and he was named first team High School All-American. That winter he was instrumental on the ice leading WE to the 1971 Gordon Cup championship. He went on to play soccer at Penn State. Giampapa came back to WE as a head soccer coach were he lead his team to a Group II title in 2000. As the hockey coach at WE, Giampapa led his team to state Mike Giampapa championships in 2004 and 2010. In 2010, the team also won the McInnis Player/Coach Cup. West Essex John Magadini Coach Delbarton & Pingry

As an athlete John Magadini was an outstanding performer in hockey, lacrosse and football. He earned 10 varsity letters at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where he won NCAA Championships for both hockey and lacrosse and was an All- American Honorable Mention for lacrosse. At RPI, Magadini played hockey and lacrosse under legendary coach Ned Harkness. After graduating in 1955 he served as an officer in the United States Marine Corps. He was inducted into the RPI Hall of Fame in 1986. As a coach, Magadini was one of the major The “Cheers” of Livingston architects in establishing Delbarton as a state hockey power during the 1980s. Magadini guided Delbarton to its first Mennen Cup title in 1984. He then directed Delbarton to two more Mennen Cups in 1986 and 1987. He Known for Burgers, was named Coach of the Year in 1986 by The Star Ledger. Magadini has also coached for the past 16 seasons at Pingry, winning the Skylands Cup in 2011 & 2012. In 2004, he was named Hockey Coach of the Year by the Babyback Ribs, Pizza & NJSIAA and Coach of the Year by The Courier-News in 2010. Beer-of-the-week Defensive prowess, consistency and that canny ability to win have been trademarks of McLaughlin’s Randolph teams for two decades. In his 19th season at the Morris County school this winter, McLaughlin earned his 300th  Casual Dining career victory with a victory over Chatham. A former scholastic standout  Take Out while playing at Livingston and then at  Outdoor Seating Merrimack College, McLaughlin began his coaching career at Livingston, where  Lunch he spent two seasons before taking command at Randolph in the 1993-1994  Dinner season. Under McLaughlin, Randolph has captured five NJSIAA Public schools championships in nine trips to Rich McLaughlin the final. Ed Purdy was an athlete at West Orange High School where he played football, and began playing hockey his senior year. He played football at Springfield College in MA where the 1965 team was undefeated and ranked #1 in New England. In 1967, Purdy began his teaching career where he started as an assistant hockey coach and eventually became a head coach for West Essex where his team won the Gordon Cup in 1971. In the 1970’s Purdy worked with Dr. Earl Hoerner at his neuro-muscular diagnostic service on specific exercises for elite athletes which developed into an educational clinic that became available to the public. In 1975, Purdy became involved with the Livingston Hockey Club. In 1976, he became a teacher at Livingston HS where he became the coach of the hockey team and the assistant football coach. In 1976, the hockey team won the league championship, the Gordon Cup and were the state finalists. In 1977 & 1978, his team was state finalist and in 1980 & 1982 they were the state champions. In 1981, Livingston won the Gordon Cup and he was The Star Ledger coach of the year.

Vin worked on improving high school and amateur officiating since moving to NJ in 1962. At that time there were only 20 Approved officials in the whole Metro-NJ-NY- CT area and only five rinks. He Michael Leuzzi served as President NIHOA-NJ (1968-1979) and USA Hockey [email protected] Atlantic District Referee-in-Chief (1975-1995). He started the first US referee school with Paul McInnis (1965-1990), was integral in making NJ the first state in the US to coordinate USA Hockey and NIHOA referee programs. Vin worked closely with the NJ Devils to develop their SETON HALL PREP support of High School and youth hockey. He also helped many NJ officials to be selected by the NHL, ECAC and other pro leagues. Vin 1987 - 1991 along with Paul McInnis officiated the Bruins-Devils "The Mother’s Day game" in the 1987-88 NHL Stanley Cup semi-finals. Instrumental in the creation and operation Christopher K. These facilities introduced all forms of ice skating to the County residents. Harold Handchen SERVICE WORK Contributor TESTING SERVICES Harold Handchen, who passed away in December of 2006, was one of the most respected people in the history of COMPUTER CABLING New Jersey Athletics. The World War II Navy veteran was named the first Athletic Director at Brick INDUSTRIAL Township High School in 1958 and in 1965 he began his service to the state EMERGENCY SERVICE Hockey Committee. He was admired by many for the support he showed to the sports programs at the high school and around the community. COMMERCIAL Handchen, who was an avid golfer, also started the Brick youth soccer league in 1963. In 1972, he was inducted into the Shore Soccer Officials Hall of Fame and in 2004 he was inducted into the Brick Wall of Fame. RESIDENTIAL Upon his retirement in 1982, the East Gymnasium at Brick High School was renamed the Harold “Hank” Handchen Gymnasium. The Handchen Cup hockey championship began in the winter of 1985. Kenneth B. Gordon Contributor Kenneth B. Gordon’s life spanned 100 years and hockey was a big part of it. He moved to South Orange from with his brothers and they brought the new sport of ice hockey with them along with the concept of team play. They played for the South Orange Field Club in the 1890’s and Kenneth organized the St. Nicholas Hockey Club in 1896. Today it is the oldest amateur sports team in North America. Kenneth played forward and captained the team for many years. He was named to the All Star Team covering the club’s first 25 years. He was instrumental in starting the American Amateur Hockey League in New York City in 1904 and served as an officer. In 1916 he coached the St. Nicks team that starred the legendary Hobey Baker. In his later years Kenneth became an Essex County Park Commissioner and was instrumental in building the rink at Branch Brook Park and South Mountain Arena. In 1959, he donated his most prized hockey trophy to the champions of the New Jersey High School hockey tournament. Today the Gordon Cup is one of the most sought after trophies in New Jersey high school athletics. Handing out the trophy at the annual tournament was one of his great pleasures.

The Gordon Cup has become symbolic of supremacy in High School Hockey. Every high school student who has ever played hockey in the North Jersey Scholastic Hockey League has dreamed of his team winning the Gordon Cup. Each team that wins can boast of having achieved the highest level of skill. The Gordon Cup is a reminder of how the sport of high school hockey has grown in the State of New Jersey from a minor struggling athletic activity to a major sport. Seton Hall has long been a powerhouse in High School Hockey and that was certainly proved true during the winter of 1997-98 when the Pirates finished with a 25-2 record. Seton Hall, lead by senior forward, Zach Hatcher, won the Gordon Cup by beating St. Joseph of Montvale 6-0 which included the hat trick of junior forward, Brandon Doria. The Pirates went on to beat Delbarton, 3-1 in the parochial school finals and beat Brick, 3-2 in the TOC contest.
