Goats from Group 4 did not ingest the plant. When the goats presented severe signs of poisoning the administration of the plant was suspended. Groups 1, 2 and 3 ingested the plant for 7.25±2.87, 9.25±2.21 and 12.50±0.57 days, respectively. All the goats recovered 7-12 days after the end of the administration of the plant. In Group 1, all the goats had embryonic death 6.25±3.59 days after the end of the ingestion of the plant. In Group 2, Amorimiathree goats septentrionalis aborted at 53, 54 and 78 days of gestation. Two goats from Group 3 gave birth- normally and the other two aborted at 114 and 111 days of gestation.   • Originis of Mexican Malpighiaceae
    Acta Botanica Mexicana 104: 107-156 (2013) ORIGINS OF MEXICAN MALPIGHIACEAE William R. andeRson University of Michigan Herbarium Ann Arbor, Michigan 48108, USA [email protected] ABSTRACT The approximately 42 lineages of Malpighiaceae currently known in Mexico are identified and briefly described and discussed. All the Mexican lineages have their ultimate roots in South America, although in some cases the connections are inferred only through phylogeny and several Mexican genera probably originated in Mexico. All the lineages have effective adaptations for dispersal except the genus Galphimia, but distributions outside Mexico and a phylogenetic tree suggest that while many Malpighiaceae reached Mexico through “stepping-stone” dispersal, some lineages probably arrived as the result of episodes of long-distance dispersal from South America. RESUMEN Se identifican y se describen y discuten brevemente los aproximadamente 42 linajes de Malpighiaceae que se conocen hasta ahora para México. Todos los linajes mexicanos tienen sus últimas raíces en Sudamérica, aunque en algunos casos las conexiones se infieren únicamente mediante filogenia y algunos géneros mexicanos probablemente se originaron en México. Todos los linajes tienen adaptaciones efectivas para su dispersión excepto el género Galphimia, pero las distribuciones fuera de México y un árbol filogenético sugieren que aunque muchas Malpighiaceae llegaron a México mediante el modelo de dispersión de “piedras de paso”, algunos linajes probablemente arribaron desde Sudamérica mediante dispersión a larga distancia. Costaa and Franklin Riet-Correaa* ABSTRACT: Amorimia septentrionalis contains sodium monofluoroactetate (MFA) and can cause acute heart failure in ruminants when ingested in toxic doses. In this study, we demonstrate that resistance to poisoning by A. septentrionalis can be improved in goats by the repeated administration of non-toxic doses of A. septentrionalis. We also show that increased resistance to poisoning by A. septentrionalis can also be achieved by the transfaunation of ruminal content from goats previously conditioned to be resistant to naïve goats. These methods of improving resistance require further study, but appear to provide potential management solutions to mitigate toxicity problems from A. septentrionalis, and perhaps other plant species containing MFA. The objective of this paper was to determine ifN. stannea contains MFA and to report the clinical signs and pathology of cattle experimentally poisoned by this plant. MFA was detected in all N. stannea plant parts except mature leaves.
