A Salute to the 2013 Eagle Scout Class

Dear Eagle Scouts,

On behalf of everyone gathered at the 64th Annual Eagle Scout Recognition Dinner, I am honored to extend our most heartfelt congratulations to you for achieving the coveted rank of Eagle Scout. We are delighted to celebrate your success and perseverance tonight, and hope you will take away memories that inspire you for years.

You join an elite brotherhood of men who have committed to live in accordance with the Scout Oath and the . Just like earning Eagle Scout, it will not always be easy or fun. The training you received in is like a trustworthy compass that will guide you as you make choices throughout your life. You could do no better than to make a habit of continuously testing your choices against the Scout Oath and Scout Law.

You earned Eagle Scout; no one gave it to you. You had encouragement and guidance along the way but, in the end, you did it yourself. You had to lead others…you had to be dependable and responsible…you had to grow and make selfless contributions to your community. You had to prove yourself worthy of joining the fellowship of other Eagle Scouts around the world. We are proud that you succeeded.

You will be challenged and tested at times. We pray you will always have the character and discipline that you demonstrated while earning Eagle Scout. Success breeds success and you have already achieved one of the most important goals in Scouting…a success that only 4% of Scouts entering Scouting ever achieve. Hold fast to the values of Scouting and you will achieve even more extraordinary goals.

You can change the world and make it better. As you have learned, doing a daily Good Turn can have extraordinary, unexpected beneficial consequences. The Scout Oath and the Scout Law transcend race, religion, language and geography. They are founded in truth about the human spirit and will serve you well no matter where life takes you. As an Eagle Scout you have demonstrated that you are a leader who enriches rather than exploits the world.

You are an Eagle Scout. You will always be an Eagle Scout. For the rest of your life you will be introduced as an Eagle Scout, not a former Eagle Scout. Now that the world knows you are an Eagle Scout you cannot escape being held to a higher standard. People will expect more from you. In addition, your sons and grandsons and generations of men following you are depending on you to uphold the values of Scouting and pass along to them all the honor, prestige and respect that you enjoy today as an Eagle Scout.

As your Scouting family, we join with all your other family members and friends in being especially proud of you and warmly welcoming you to the rank of Eagle Scout.

Sincerely.
