December 2020 Newsletter THE LINCOLN NEWSLETTER The Official Newsletter of the Nevada Republican Club December 2020 JANUARY 5TH LUNCHEON TO FEATURE THE PRESIDENT OF THE NEVADA MINING ASSOCIATION The Nevada Mining Industry will be a target of the Democrats in the upcoming Legislative Session. To inform us on mining issues in Nevada, Mr. Tyre Gray, President of the Nevada Mining Association, will speak at our January 5th luncheon. Mr. Gray is as a charismatic thought-leader. Known for his big laugh and positive outlook, Tyre cut his teeth as an educator at an at-risk learning academy before transitioning into the private sector where he spent the past two decades acquiring a wide variety of skills holding leadership positions in the consulting, resorts, and legal industry. Immediately before taking the helm of the Association, Tyre was an attorney in private practice focusing on government affairs, where he represented numerous Fortune 500 companies before local, state, and federal regulatory and legislative bodies across the southwestern states. Tyre’s sharp dress is only matched by his sharp wit and great appreciation for music. Tyre lives in Las Vegas, NV, with his wife, Ashanti, son Adonis, and his daughter, Reign. December 2020 - page 1 President's Message Greetings all, I am honored to be serving as your Nevada Republican Club President for 2021. I look forward to serving you and continuing to grow our club in both size and importance. My heartfelt thanks go out to Pauline Lee for her dedication to the club and for all the hard work she has done over her three years as our President. She made this club a force within the party and throughout Nevada. I look forward to working with her more as she joins our distinguished list of Past Presidents. This coming year offers new challenges for our club and for Republicans both in Clark County and in Nevada in general. We made some great strides in the Legislative elections, taking away the Democrats super majority in the Assembly and picking up a seat in the Senate. That will help us all in the upcoming Legislative Session as they work to recover Nevada from the devastation caused by the Governor’s draconian measures that have crippled Nevada’s economy. There is much to do to get us back to where we were at the beginning of 2020. Our plan is to be involved as they work through the Session. We plan to provide input and to have our members testify at hearings during the Session to have our voices heard and to, hopefully, influence the actions the Legislature takes. We will need all your help to make this happen. Our Board will meet next month for our annual retreat to develop our goals and plans for the year and to figure out the best way to have our voices heard and how we can help make Nevada better. Once we finish that, I’ll let you all know where we are headed and how you can help. We are also planning an evening social for next month and will send out the details once we finalize them. We also plan to renew our quarterly socials so that we can meet in a more casual environment to get to know each other better and to provide everyone with the opportunity to mingle and talk with folks they don’t usually get to spend time with. We will also have to begin our work for the 2022 elections, as we will work to elect a new Governor, all the state officers, Legislators, as well as Representatives to Congress and one US Senator. There is much to do and I look forward to working with you all to achieve more success. If you haven't taken the chance yet to renew your membership for 2021, now is the time. You can do that easily through the Club website or at our January luncheon. Best Wishes for a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and a Happy 2021. Hotly Contested County Commission District C Race When all the ballots were counted in November, Stavros Anthony was 10 votes behind in his race against Ross Miller for the County Commission C race. Despite Registrar of Voters Joe Gloria’s testimony that there were 139 discrepancies discovered among the votes cast in that election and that those questionable votes exceeded the difference in the race, the Commission voted to certify the race anyway. Anthony asked for a recount, in which many of our club officers and members participated, but ended the recount 15 votes behind. Stavros’ campaign took the election to District Court seeking an injunction due to the 139 discrepancies, but the case was denied, and the County Commission again certified the election for Ross Miller. Stavros’ campaign has vowed to take their case to the State Supreme Court, seeking a new election. We look forward to his success and the opportunity for the voters on District C to have a fair and honest election. December 2020 - page 4 Nevada Republican Club Judicial Recommendations Card Yields Successes The Club interviewed judicial candidates and created a recommendations list for the contested judicial candidates in Clark County for the June primary and November general election. We printed and distributed 25,000 slate cards throughout Clark County and had the list printed in numerous publications. Our efforts yielded good results, as many of our recommended candidates were successful. Congratulations to those who won their judicial races. • Review and Discussion Regarding the 2017 Legislative Session with Possible Direction to Staff. (For Possible Action)
AGENDA ITEM# 12 SUN VALLEY GENERAL IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT DATE: 2-3-17 TO: Board of Trustees FROM: Darrin Price – General Manager SUBJECT: Review and discussion regarding the 2017 Legislative Session with possible direction to staff. (for possible action). Every two years the Nevada Legislature meets. 2017 is here and it’s that time again. In 2014, the District cancelled its Lobbying contract with Fred Hillerby. At that time the total expenses for the lobbying contract was $1,650.00 dollars a month year round (as to include committee meetings that can and do meet when the session is closed and networking). In February of 2015, the board unanimously approved the General Manager “to act in the lobbying capacity” for the District. Per this direction I have started to assemble a team to assist me with monitoring, tracking, networking, and attending sessions, committee meetings, and general networking to establish relationships with both legislators and their staff. I registered myself, Jennifer, and Maddy as paid lobbyist for this session. The cost to register is $300.00 dollars per person, a total of $900.00 dollars. As a registered lobbyist you can track 10 bills via NELLIS. NELLIS is the Nevada Electronic Legislative Information System. It allows for PLT: What is Personalized Legislative Tracking (PLT)? · PLT allows you to subscribe to BDRs, bills, and budgets that are of interest to you, and subsequently tag and create notes on your subscriptions. · The advantage of PLT is that you will receive immediate notifications of hearings, a daily status notification, and have access to tailored, exportable reports for the subscriptions you have chosen to track.
