I am very sorry to report that at the end of the Christmas term, Miss Julie Morgan, our wonderful Head of History left Mountbatten for the Netherlands. Miss Morgan joined us as a newly-qualified teacher in 2011 and quickly established herself as an outstanding teacher of history. She was quickly promoted to an Assistant Head of Year, where her pastoral skills greatly supported her year group.

In 2015, she was promoted again to Head of History. During her tenure she has enhanced the department’s already superb reputation for outstanding GCSE results, led a magnificent series of trips, and prepared the department for the challenges of the new GCSE syllabus.

Her students, like her colleagues, are very sorry to see her leave but wish her well in her new endeavours. We also say goodbye to Mrs Sands and Mr Watkins. We thank them for their contributions to business and technology respectively.

Clowning around to a thriller dance

The circus and Halloween have been two themes for the dance classes with students choreographing their own dances.

The students have led warm ups each week before going on to learn set routines and adding their own movements to the dance.

Students have developed their timing and co-ordination over this term and have shown great creativity.

The trampolining club has been hugely popular this term and we have allocated termly slots to those who would like to participate.

Students have been learning and developing various skills each week with the Year 10s providing excellent coaching to the Year 7s! Ben Phillips High Praise for the Class of 2017

Executive Headteacher, Heather McIlroy, has praised the quality of GCSE results from the Class of 2017.

From last summer’s results, 80% of all students secured A* to C, or Grades 4 to 9 under the new grading system, in English and Mathematics.

From the 2017 exams, 78% achieved at least five standard GCSE passes including English and Mathematics and 30% of all grades were either A or A* (or Grades 7, 8 or 9). There was a 40% pass rate from students who took the English Baccalaureate.

Mrs McIlroy praised both the students and teachers for the excellent set of results.

She said: “We are absolutely delighted with what is a superb set of results. They tell the story of excellent teachers and ambitious students, all working together to succeed.

“Last year was a record year, but this year group has done even better – incredible given the greater academic demand of the new GCSEs, but Mountbatten students, as always, rose to the challenge.”
