Welcome to Juneau Dance Theatre’s Spring Showcase 2021! While we are unable to have live performances this spring due to ongoing safety measures, we are thrilled to present a virtual program – filmed at the theater – Light Board Operator: Bo Anderson that can be shared with our community and beyond. Sound Board Operator: Karen Allen We are excited to present a diverse program that features classical ballet, tap, and contemporary styles of dance, performed by all levels, from our youngest Spotlight Operators: Kristofer Ely, Katlyn Fergusson dancers to our graduating seniors. This year’s program features a variety of new works created by our talented faculty, a revival of Matthew Neenan’s Natasha, Props: Bo Anderson, Lyra Culbreth, Janice Hurley, Dawn Jouppi, excerpts from the iconic classical ballet, The Sleeping Beauty, and a new JDHS Drama Department, Shelly Wright commissioned piece choreographed by JDT alumna Anna McDowell. Anna’s new work titled Blurred Visions is a collaboration with William Todd Hunt, Costume Co-Coordinators: Amy Ely, Bridget Lujan Artistic Director of Orpheus Project. The two artists worked together over the span of many months to create not only dance to go with the music, but music Costume Crew: Adara Allen, Gabby Ely, Emily Fergusson, Katy to go with the dance. About Juneau Dance Theatre Juneau Dance Theatre (JDT) was founded in 1975, by a small group of individuals, committed to dance education. Until then, no formal dance training had been available to Juneau residents. JDT, then known as Juneau Dance Unlimited, hosted inspiring workshops and provided professional dance instruction. The Dancing Garden Music: Selections from the album “In Gabriel’s Garden”, featuring In 1977, the Juneau Dance Festival was created, bringing guest artists to Wynton Marsalis with Maestro Anthony Newman and the English Juneau to teach a month of technique and repertory classes to children Chamber Orchestra and adults. In 1990, visual arts classes were added and the next year, Choreography: Janice Hurley music and theatre classes were also offered. Over the next several decades, this program evolved into the popular and beloved, Juneau Fine Sunrise and the Entrance of the Morning Glories Arts Camp, offered each June, to K-6 graders. Current programming Sonata in D Major, G. 5 includes classes such as drawing, collage, painting, STEM, dance and Giuseppe Torrelli movement, music and sculpting. I. Adagio

JDT changed its focus in 1992, moving towards the establishment of a Leadonna Castillo, Makenzie Dunn, Sophie Griffith, Amelia permanent, non-profit dance school taught by local instructors. JDT began offering year-round dance training, and the studio grew in size and Krueger, Sienna Mueca, Gracie Scott, with Assistant, Megan scope, eventually moving from a downtown location at the Scottish Rite Lujan Temple, to its current location in the valley above Alaska Litho. ZACHARY HENCH JDT Artistic Director

Originally from Loysville, Pennsylvania, Mr. Hench began his training at Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet where he studied for eight years. He attended summer intensives at the School of American Ballet in New York and completed his pre-professional education at the Kirov Academy of Ballet in Washington D.C. Mr. Hench danced as a principal with Boston Ballet, , and Pennsylvania Ballet. Over the course of his 22 year career, he performed leading roles in ballets such as Swan Lake, Giselle, Le Corsaire, La Sylphide, Romeo and Juliet, Cinderella, and La Fille mal gardée. His extensive neoclassical and contemporary repertoire included works by 2021 Spring Showcase Sponsor George Balanchine, William Forsythe, and Nacho Duato, among many others. Mr. Hench originated roles in ballets by choreographers such as Christopher Wheeldon, Twyla Tharp, and Helgi Tomasson, and performed throughout the world as a guest artist. He has coached students for performances and competitions, and has been invited to teach master classes and summer intensives across the country.

Mr. Hench served as a union delegate while dancing at Pennsylvania Ballet, facilitating communication between dancers and management and representing his colleagues during contract negotiations. The company then invited Mr. Hench to join the artistic staff as Ballet Master, and he successfully led the organization through a critical period of internal Supporting Partners: transitions. Mr. Hench now leads JDT as Artistic Director, and can be Alaska Airlines credited for much of the organization’s growth since 2015, including Alaska State Council on the Arts establishing a boys’ scholarship program, in an attempt to recruit and City and Borough of Juneau retain more male dancers wishing to study ballet. He regularly invites Juneau Arts and Humanities Council world renown guest artists and faculty, to travel to Juneau to work with, and alongside JDT’s students. CATHERINE FOWLE JANICE HURLEY JDT Principal Teacher and Ballet Master JDT Faculty, Young Dancer Coordinator

Catherine is JDT’s Principal Teacher and Ballet Janice Hurley received her teaching credentials Master. Prior to coming to Juneau in 2017, from the University of Minnesota and her Bachelor Catherine served as associate artistic director of of Arts in Theatre Arts from Jacksonville University Central Texas Youth Ballet and had been on the in Florida. She has taught in both academic and teaching faculty for Eglevsky Ballet in New York, performing arts venues. She has performed, under the direction of Laszlo Berdo. Catherine choreographed, and directed in a variety of dance art trained with Leslie Hench at Central Pennsylvania styles. Since moving to Juneau, Janice has Youth Ballet, in addition to attending programs at participated in projects with Northern Lights Junior Virginia School of the Arts and University of North Theatre, Theater at Latitude 58, Juneau Lyric Opera, Opera to Go and Carolina School of the Arts. She teaches Level 2 Perseverance Theatre. She was the Assistant Director of Gold Creek Child through Level 6, and all levels of pointe and variations. Catherine choreographs Development Center from 2001-2004. She was the Artistic Director of Juneau original pieces for our Spring Showcases. She is responsible for rehearsing all Dance Theatre from 2004 through June of 2011. Janice continues to teach the ballet choreography for JDT performances, and works closely with the Artistic children’s dance program for JRC-The Alaska Club and work with various Director on curriculum and programming needs. ANNA MCDOWELL Adara Allen Guest Choreographer, Blurred Visions Adara (age 16) started dancing at age three, because her big sister was also dancing at the time. “I love having the Anna McDowell was born and raised in Juneau, ability to express myself through movement,” she says. Luna Ewing Megan Lujan Luna (age 17) started ballet as a child because she says Megan (age 17) has been dancing since she was five years she “was very shy and it was an activity I could do old, when her mom signed her up for classes. Abigail Portiles Abigail (age 13) started dancing because of a cartoon she once watched. She loves to perform and is a Lilac Fairy Attendant and a Woodland Glade Fairy in The Sleeping Beauty. She is also in Blurred Visions. Abigail likes being backstage because it gives her time to be with her friends. She admires Elizabeth Murphy, a principal dancer at (PNB) and aspires to join PNB one day and live in Seattle. This summer, she plans to study for her driving permit.

Georgia Post Georgia (age 14) performs as a Lilac Fairy Attendant and the Crystal Fountain Fairy in The Sleeping Beauty, and in Blurred Visions. She loves dancing and the connections she makes with her peers. “It’s amazing when you get to create something with other people,” she says. Georgia fell in love with dancing when she was little and saw beautiful dancers onstage. “I made it one of my goals to be like them. My favorite thing about dancing is being able to make beautiful art with only your body.” Georgia has been following Misty Copeland’s career for the past five years, ever since she did a report on Copeland in elementary school. “She really inspired me in her dancing and how she Viktor Bell Grace Bultez Gabby Ely overcame her struggles.” Georgia plans to attend the Sitka Fine Arts Camp this summer and JDT’s summer intensive. She would like to thank her parents for their support.

Ruby Rivas Ruby (age 14) has loved dancing since she took her first class at three years old. “I get to move my body in a different way that is graceful. It’s also good cross training for my other sports,” she says. Ruby performs the Canary Fairy and the corps in The Sleeping Beauty, and Blurred Visions. Her favorite part about the performance experience is bonding with her friends backstage and being onstage in front of an audience. Ruby does not have a favorite professional dancer. “Anyone who does ballet has something to bring even if they aren’t the best,” she Kensey Jenkins Ainsley Mallott says. This summer she plans to do outdoor activities with friends and family, then continue with JDT in the fall. Ruby enjoys skiing, running, swimming, and hiking. She thanks her parents for driving her to classes and rehearsals, and everyone who encourages her.
