IMAGINATION By Roger Lord

The diagramed hand was played in March in the at the St. Louis NABC:

NORTH S – 4 Dealer - East H – QJ10542 Vul - both D – 10 4 3 C – 10 9 5

SOUTH EAST SOUTH WEST NORTH S – AQ107 Pass 1 Heart 2 Spades 3 Hearts H – AK876 3 Spades Pass Pass 4 Hearts D – K7 Pass Pass Pass C – 6 3

Suppose you are South, declarer at four hearts, after the auction shown. West leads the spade nine, East follows with the jack. How do you make 10 tricks? HINT: Think Fast!!!

Time’s up. However you begin, probably you will end with a losing of the diamond king as West has the ace. Here is the full deal:

NORTH Wojciech Kurkowski, our Polish friend who was an interim St. S – 4 Louisan prior to settling in Las Vegas, used his imagination and H – QJ10542 quick wit to make this “impossible” contract. His opponents, D – 10 4 3 from India, bid as shown. West’s lead of the spade nine was not a C – 10 9 5 usual card from his holding but perhaps it had suit preference WEST EAST implication (showing a high diamond card). S – K986532 S - J H – 3 H - 9 When East followed with the spade jack, Wojciech smoothly won D – AJ D – Q98652 with his ACE! He had to play without a flicker of hesitation. C – Q84 C – AKJ72 After drawing trumps he led the spade seven. West, who already SOUTH had placed the spade queen in his partner’s hand, carelessly – but S – AQ107 understandably – ducked. Wojciech shocked West by pitching a H – AK876 club from dummy as East showed out. D – K7 C – 6 3 Now declarer took a ruffing finesse with his spade queen-ten against West’s king, setting up a second club discard from dummy and holding his minor-suit losers to three.

The score produced by the deceptive play was plus 620 which was worth 23 ½ of 25 matchpoints.
