Message from the Board Chair

At the heart of SFMOMA’s dedication to collecting and presenting world-class art is a commitment to the San Francisco and wider Bay Area communities.

Our expansion project, which made major progress in fi scal year 2011, aims to enhance SFMOMA’s contributions to public life here in San Francisco. The very positive response to the conceptual designs for our new building from the museum’s members and the public confi rm that we are on the right track with our plans. The widespread enthusiasm for the expansion is a source of inspiration as this transformative project moves forward.

The announcement of the Collections Campaign in 2011 also underscored the strength of SFMOMA’s connection with the Bay Area art community. In addition to the Fisher family’s extraordinary collection gift, the campaign will bring hundreds of new works into the SFMOMA collection from the Bay Area and around the world.

I invite you to explore our expansion and the Collections Campaign more fully in our 2011 annual report iPad app, Story of a Year (search for “SFMOMA 2011” in the iTunes store). The app provides a virtual tour of our new build- ing, a Collections Campaign gallery of images, and much more.

Looking back on 2011 and forward to the years ahead, I feel more grateful than ever to be part of the SFMOMA community at this important time of growth and innovation. As you browse through this report, I hope you’ll feel equally inspired to participate in the future of the museum, a true San Francisco treasure.

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR 4 SAN FRANCISCO MUSEUM OF MODERN ART ANNUAL REPORT 2011

Message from the Director

Six hundred thousand visitors can’t be wrong—there’s something magnetic about SFMOMA. Maybe it’s the unforgettable exhibitions and programs we organize, or the extraordinary, ever-expanding collection we house. Or maybe it’s just the gusto with which we pursue the new. No matter what draws visitors to our galleries or to the growing online SFMOMA community that thrives beyond our walls, the museum captures attention and shifts perceptions.

SFMOMA’s transformative potential was more evident than ever in 2011, not only in the future promise of the expansion
